Differences in priorities of high school students' knowledge activated in laboratory and earth environmental contexts (고등학교 학생들의 문제해결에서 맥락에 따라 활성화되는 지식의 우선순위차이)

  • Four science concepts were selected from high school science textbook to investigate the differences in priorities of students knowledge activated during solving earth science problems in laboratory and earth science environmental contexts. Two items, one for laboratory context and the other for earth environmental context, were developed for earth selected concept The subjects were constituted of 192 students in 11th grade and 196 in 12th grade in one senior high school. Students' responses were categorized using graph models and analyzed in terms of 'Common Activated Knowledge'(CAK). and 'Specific Activated Knowledge'(SAK) across students' cognitive frames, grades, and sex. As contextual differences of the problems increased, context effects in priorities of CAK were reported in favor of laboratory context, on the contrary those of SAK in favor of earth environmental context. Context effects were reported across cognitive frames, especially students with laboratory cognitive frames showed more significant context effects than others. Lower graders and girls showed relatively large context effects. The results of this study showed that science concepts learned in a laboratory context are not easily transferred to earth environmental context. Therefore, special instructional strategies should be developed to overcome the context effect s according to activated knowledges with high priorities in laboratory and earth environmental context.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop environmental inquiry activities for teaching the 10th grade students in science classes of high school. The activities are developed to perform goals of environmental education for sustainable development. In order to this, activities are sequently organized in order of context of laboratory, field, and problem solving in respect of one learning topic. The object of inquiry activities in laboratory context is understanding concepts related environment and environmental pollution. The inquiry activities in field context have an object of attaining good awareness and attitude toward environment. Throughout the activities in probem solving context students are expected to have a mind of participating in environmental issues. The activities are designed to learn and use integrated science knowledge in many domains. Some activities are intended to utilize MBL(Microcomputer-based Laboratory). The ICT materials, lesson plans, instructional sheets for teaching and student' sheets for inquiry were produced to guide these activities. It is expected that this effort will contribute to cultivate environmental literate persons who have not only scientific understanding but also practical will of environmental issues.

Home Network Service and Environmental Context shown in Recent Digital Home Exhibition Houses (최근 디지털 홈 주택전시관에서 나타난 홈 네트워크 제공서비스와 환경적 컨텍스)

  • New paradigm of the 21st is 'Ubiquitous'. And great changes arises from the digital environment and technology. Also, our living environments are changing very rapidly. Because of rapid developments, we didn't have enough time to examine our current situation. So we had to look around the current living spaces. The main purpose of this research was to know about the home network service and environmental context in our living spaces and to explore the outlook in the forseeable future. To search them, four recent digital home exhibition houses were examined. The findings showed that many kinds of common network systems were suggested and were acted in limited spaces. And when we examined the environmental context, we found most of the instruments were installed fixed ones or integrated information appliances. Therefore, the plan of digital home needs to consider environmental context and the combination of residents and living spaces.

Implementation of Context-Aware Services Platform Supporting Mobile Agents

  • A context-aware services platform supporting mobile agents consists of sensor nodes and a sensor coordinator. Sensor nodes collect environmental information and transmit the collected information to the sensor coordinator through wireless sensor networks. The sensor coordinator passes the information to the context-aware service module, and the mobile agent. The context-aware service module or the mobile agent performs services suitable for a user's situation based on the environmental information and a service actuation message is delivered to an actuation node through the sensor coordinator. In this paper, we present a context-aware services platform structure employed in our project, and describe context-aware services platform interfaces with a context-aware service module and mobile agents.

  • Construction system modeling can enhance work performance by following the behaviors of a system. System behaviors may originate from physical aspects of a system, namely operation level variables, or from non-physical aspects of a system known as context level variables. However, construction system modelers usually focus on only one type of system variable (i.e., operation level or context level) which can lead to less accurate results. Hybrid modeling with System Dynamics (SD) and Discrete Event Simulation (DES) is one of the approaches that has been utilized to address this issue. In this research, an SD-DES hybrid model of a steel fabrication shop is developed, and the benefits of capturing context level variables together with operation level variables in the model are discussed.

Context Recognition Using Environmental Sound for Client Monitoring System (피보호자 모니터링 시스템을 위한 환경음 기반 상황 인식)

  • This paper presents a context recognition method using environmental sound signals, which is applied to a mobile-based client monitoring system. Seven acoustic contexts are defined and the corresponding environmental sound signals are obtained for the experiments. To evaluate the performance of the context recognition, MFCC and LPCC method are employed as feature extraction, and statistical pattern recognition method are used employing GMM and HMM as acoustic models, The experimental results show that LPCC and HMM are more effective at improving context recognition accuracy compared to MFCC and GMM respectively. The recognition system using LPCC and HMM obtains 96.03% in recognition accuracy. These results demonstrate that LPCC is effective to represent environmental sounds which contain more various frequency components compared to human speech. They also prove that HMM is more effective to model the time-varying environmental sounds compared to GMM.

The Differences In Knowledges Activated inLaboratory and Earth Environmental Contexts (실험실맥락과 지구환경맥락의 문제해결에서 활성화되는 지식의 차이)

  • Four science concepts were selected from high school earth science textbook to investigate the differences in students knowledges activated in laboratory and earth environmemtal contexts. Two items, one is for laboratory and the other for earth environmental contexts, were develped for each selected concept. Students' responses were analyzed in terms of 'Common Activated Knowledges' (CAK), 'Specific Activated Knowledges'(SAK) across students' cognitive frames, grades and sexes. As contextual differences of the problems increased, gender contributed more than other variables to the frequencies of activating CAK and SAK. Context effects were also reported across cognitive frames for CAK, but SAK became more avtivated when the contextual differences of the items become smaller. As a whole, students with laboratory cognitive frames showed more significant context effects than others. Students in 11th grade, with scientific frames and with earth science cognitive frames showed relatively small context effects. The results of the study showed that sciene concepts learned in a laboratory context are not usually transferred spontaneously to earth environmental contexts. Special instructional strategies should developed to overcome the context effects.

  • The advance of wireless telecommunication and observation technologies leads developing sensor and sensor network for serving the context information continuously. Besides, in order to understand and cope with the context awareness based on the sensor network, it is becoming important issue to deal with plentiful data transmitted from various sensors. Therefore, we propose a context awareness system to deal with the plentiful sensor data in a vast area such as the prevention of a forest fire, the warning system for detecting environmental pollution, and the analysis of the traffic information, etc. The proposed system consists of the context acquisition to collect and store various sensor data, the knowledge base to keep context information and context log, the rule manager to process context information depending on user defined rules, and the situation information manager to analysis and recognize the context, etc. The proposed system is implemented for managing renewable energy data management transmitted from a large scale area.

  • The impact of a new stadium on the urban context and regional development is significant. Especially where several new stadiums are built for single mega events like the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games or the Soccer World Cup the impact is even higher. Objective of this paper is to identify and analyze the key drivers for sustainable integration of stadiums within the existing context. The level of sustainability is analyzed based on four different categories: urban, social, environmental and economics. Particular focus is on the project management strategy for implementation of the key drivers during pre-design, design and execution. In conclusion key elements of the project management strategy for sustainable integration of a stadium within the urban, environmental, social and economic context are summarized.

  • Recent robot software platform research focuses on providing intelligent service via abstraction of robot devices. Context-aware techniques are necessary for intelligent robot services, which are based on the perception of environmental information obtained from heterogeneous sensors in IoT environment. Robot Operating System (ROS) provides protocols to operate robot devices. ROS includes functions for abstracting heterogeneous sensors themselves in order to control the robot, however, it lacks the ability to provide context information that the robot can perceive based on environmental information through consistent collection methods. In this paper, we propose a relay system for ROS to provide context-aware robot service. The proposed system makes it possible for ROS to control and provide context-aware robot services with relay of an external context-aware system and ROS. In experiments, we demonstrate procedures that robot services abstracted from ROS and an external context-aware system works together based on the proposed system.
