This study was conducted at an automobile assembly line located in Kyonggi-do, Korea from January 16 to February 28, 1995. The purposes of this study were to assess worker exposures to hand-arm vibration and the performance of gloves for reduction of vibration. The exposure to vibration was measured using to the ISO 5349(1986) method. Vibration acceleration and frequency spectra for each tool were determined on-line replicating actual working conditions and analyzed together with exposure time for evaluating individual worker exposure. Eight pneumatic hand tools, 60 workers exposured to hand-arm vibration, and three pairs of gloves were involved in this study. Results are summarized as follows. 1. Dominant frequencies of vibration for all tools(n=8) measured in this study ranged from 250 Hz to 800 Hz. 2. There was no significant correleration between dominant frequencies and free running speed (p>0.05). 3. Total predicted exposure times of using impact, hammer type did not exceed 40 minutes, but metal finish task, using grinder and sander exceeded 40 minutes. Total exposure time affected significantly the frequency-weighted, 4 hr equivalent acceleration. 4. Predicted prevalence and observed exposure period data were compared in workers(n=60), according to ISO 5349. In this results, 23(50.0 %) and 24(48.07 %) persons exceeded the mean latency periods for vibration-induced white finger(VWF) at 10 % (n=46) and 50 % (n=52) standards, respectively. On the basis of ISO equation, mean latent periods for VWF were 3.23, 4.72 years at 10 %, 50 % standards, respectively. 5. Reduction of vibration by gloves was evaluated. Since impact pneumatic tools produced low frequency vibrations, conventional gloves did not provide any protection. Gloves A and C amplify somewhat the signal at frequency below 400 Hz; the attenuation increases progressively by frequency to reach 18 dB ($7.94{\times}10^{-6}m/s^2$) at 1,000 Hz, slightly worsening Glove B did not provide any protection and made the situation slightly worse. However, since they make the hands warm, the occurrence of vibration-induced white fingers may be reduced.

By comparing test blasting data experimented in three layered-structure polymorphic grounds to a geological profile, influence of blast vibration with respect to uncontrollable ground characteristics was analyzed. Inefficient blast have been performed without sufficient verifications or confirmations because insufficiencies with regard to experiments and data of blasting engineering on the layered structures to be irregularly repeated clinker layer consisted of volcanic clastic zones. It is difficult to quantify N values of clinkers within test blasting region because they have diverse ranges, or coverages. An absolute value of attenuation coefficient N in a field, estimated by blasting vibration predictive equation (SRSD), are lesser than criteria of a design instruction, meaning that vibrations caused by blast can spread far away, and the vibrational characteristics of blasting test No.1, indicating relatively small values, inferred by the geological profile, pressures of gas by the explosion may be lost into a widely distributed clinker layers by penetrating holes resulted from blast into vicinity of clinker layers located in bottom of soft rock layers at the moment of blast. As a result, amounts of spalling rocks are decreased by almost half. Also, ranges of primary frequencies in the fields are identified as similar to those of natural frequency of typical structures.

In recent years, various types of coastal protection scheme have been studied around the coastal region. Among them, so-called zonal protection systems are being watched with interest from various points of view. In this paper, wave overtopping rate from overflowing the vertical seawall is investigated by conducting two dimensional model on the horizontal bed experiment. Hereafter this system is referred to as a artificial reef system. One is the foundation to control wave height near the surfzone and the other is function to prevent coastal disaster by suppressing net overtopping rate. The main results obtained in this study are summarized as follows. 1) Wave attenuation taken place on the artificial reef can be predicted numerically by using energy dispersion model due to wave breaking proposed by Battjes. 2) To evaluate the wave overtopping rate from a vertical seadike on various coastal constructions by weir model, a numerical procedure for prediction of overtopping is confirmed.

Noise prediction for HVAC(Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning) systems are normally performed by empirical method suggested by NEBB(National Environmental Balancing Bureau, 1994). However, the method is not suitable for large ducts in ships. In this paper, computational analysis methods are used to develop a noise prediction method for the large ducts in ships. To develop regression formula of attenuation of sound pressure level in large ducts, Boundary Element Method(BEM) is used. BEM and Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) are applied to the analysis of flow-induced noise in ducts with stiffeners inside. Loud noise above 100 dB can be generated in some cases. Breakout noises of large ducts are also analyzed by using BEM and Finite Element Method(FEM). The acoustic pressure level shows about 10-15dB difference between inside and outside of the duct. Utilizing the results of this study, it is expected that shipyard planners can predict noise of the HVAC system for ships.

The distribution of water mass in Deukryang Bay was investigated using observational data obtained on July 12 (spring tide) and 19 (neap tide) in 1994. In characteristics of water mass at the bay the area is divided into three ones by a vertical attenuation coefficient k and a stratification parameter, log sub (10) (H/U super (3)), was H is depth, and U mean velocity in the bay. The contour of k=0.6 has a similar distribution to the isobath of 10m depth in spring tide, and of 5m depth in neap tide, respectively. This indicates that the water mass in the area between the isobath of 5m and 10m depth is changed by tidal periods. The stratification parameter corresponding to k=0.6 was 2.1~2.2. In the shallow water of 5m depth the characteristics of water mass was distributed in temperature of 25.5~31.$0^{\circ}C$ and salinity of 32.8~33.8PSU(Practical Salinity Unit), the temperature was high and the salinity distributed widely. In the deep water of 10m depth it was the temperature of 22.0~29.5$^{\circ}C$ and the salinity of 33.0~33.6PSU, the temperature was low and the salinity distributed narrowly. In the middle depth water of 5m to 10m depth, the temperature of 22.0~30.$0^{\circ}C$ and the salinity of 32.8~33.5PSU, its values showed the middle between the values of the deep area and the values of the shallow area.

A 3D model was developed to calculate the UV intensity of a submerged-type UV disinfection reactor. Numerical experiments were conducted by inputting the design factors of an open channel-type disinfection reactor and a pipe-type disinfection reactor that were installed in an actual sewage treatment plant. The following data were obtained: The average UV intensity of the installed open channel-type reactor and pipe-type reactor was 7.87 mW/cm2 and 13.09 mW/cm2, respectively; the UV dose reflecting the UV irradiation time and taking into account attenuation effects such as mixing imbalance, lamp aging, temperature, and fouling, was expected to be 21.1 mJ/cm2 and 24.8 mJ/cm2, respectively, and these values are 5 % and 24 % higher than the target UV dose of 20 mJ/cm2, respectively. By using the UV3D model, the optimal lamp position, which maximizes the average UV intensity without changing the size of the disinfection reactor or lamp output power, can be found. In this case, by only adjusting the lamp position, the average UV intensity can be increased by 0.9 % for the open channel-type and 0.5 % for the pipe-type, respectively. A better average UV intensity can be obtained by model simulation. By adjusting the horizontal and vertical ratio of the open channel-type reactor and by moving the lamp position, the average UV intensity can be increased by 7.4 % more than the present case.

Blocking electromagnetic waves on the exterior walls of buildings effectively reduces the intensity of electromagnetic fields in buildings, which leads to attenuation of electromagnetic disturbances, so there is a great interest in developing technologies. In this study, SiC by-products and graphite generated in the semiconductor field were selected and mixed into mortar after pretreatment such as pulverization to evaluate their physical properties and electromagnetic wave shielding performance. Considering the economic efficiency of each shielding material, only 10% volume of the outermost side of the experiment was mixed with each shielding material to evaluate the shielding performance. The shielding performance was predicted when the experiment was manufactured by mixing the shielding material with the entire volume of the experiment using the shielding effect evaluation formula. The results of the experiment showed that the shielding performance was up to 20 dB when SiC grains were mixed with shielding materials, the shielding performance was up to 18 dB when graphite powder was mixed with shielding materials, and the shielding performance was up to 28 dB when SiC powder was mixed with shielding materials, and the shielding performance was close to 30 dB, which is known to have a shielding rate of 99.9%.
Sound barrier walls are one of the most effective alternatives for reducing environmental noise on roads and railways in the city center. The insertion loss of the sound barrier against road traffic noise is the sum of the sound transmission loss, sound absorption loss, and sound energy reduction due to the diffraction attenuation of the sound barrier. The sound transmission loss of the sound barrier is one of the important factors that determine the insertion loss of the sound barrier and is a basic indicator that determines the performance of the sound barrier. Nevertheless, there is not a separate standard in Korea for measuring the acoustic transmission loss of sound barrier panels. There are only a few conditions in KS F 4770 series that stipulates on the general material of sound barrier panels. This thesis examines the necessity of the acoustic transmission loss measurement and evaluation standards of sound barrier walls, and seeks a measurement method in a free sound field (anechoic chamber) sound receiving room considering the characteristics of sound barrier walls installed in external spaces, unlike indoor building materials. In addition, a single number evaluation method using a reference spectrum was proposed so that the sound insulation effect according to various installation places such as roadside or railroad side can be easily displayed.

The performance evaluation of a conventional Wave Resonator at the entrance of harbors against solitary wave has been performed using 3D numerical wave flume. A wave resonator has been designed for the attenuation of the transmitted wave energy by trapping the short periodic incident waves only. In this study, however, the controlled performance of the wave resonator by its various widths has been numerically investigated for solitary waves. Source distribution method based on the Green function and the 3D one-field Model for immiscible TWO-Phase flows (TWOPM-3D) using 3D numerical wave flume were used for the short-periodic waves and the solitary waves, respectively, and these models were verified through the comparisons with the previous experimental and numerical results by other researchers. It was confirmed that the wave resonator is effective enough to control the solitary waves as well as the periodic waves when it compares with the case of no resonance system. Further, it was found that there is the optimal width of a wave resonator to attenuate the target solitary waves.

Sustained meteorological drought can lead to hydrological drought, known as drought propagation. The propagated droughts cause more damage to the region than the non-propagated droughts. Recent studies on drought propagation have focused on identifying the lag time using correlation analysis. There is a lack of studies comparing damage patterns between propagated and non-propagated droughts. In this study, the overlap and pooling propagation between meteorological and hydrological droughts were analyzed using drought indices in Chungcheong Province to identify drought propagation, and the propagation characteristics such as pooling, attenuation, lag and extension were analyzed. The results showed that although Chungju-si experienced a meteorological drought in 2010, no damage was caused by the drought. However, a meteorological drought in 2017 and 2018 propagated into a hydrological drought of longer duration but less severity, resulting in drought-affected damage. Similarly, Cheongyang-gun experienced a meteorological drought in 2017, but no damage was reported from the drought. However, in the neighboring county of Buyeo-gun, a meteorological drought with a similar magnitude propagated to a hydrological drought during the same period, resulting in drought-affected damage. The overall results indicated that the damage from propagated drought events was more severe than the non-propagated drought events, and these results can be used as basic data for establishing drought response policies suitable for the region.
