  • This study was conducted to analyze the reasons for aging in place through an in-depth interview, which is a qualitative research method. The subjects of the study were 17 adults over the age of 60 years who preferred aging in place. Interviewees were asked questions about their experiences of past living, present living, and the future place where they want to live in and the reasons for their choice. In the in-depth interviews conducted from September 2012 to May 2013 for data collection the research participants were asked open-ended questions about their past living experiences and future living plan and were given the freedom to answer the questions in their own words. The results of the in-depth interviews revealed the following reasons for aging in place: 1) familiarity due to long-term residence, 2) strong attachment to the place and the neighbors, 3) satisfaction of present house, 4) personal stories associated with present house, 5) feeling of living in their own home, 6) convenience of the neighborhood for living, 7) caring relationship with the neighbors, 8) fear of a change of environment, and 9) resignation to the rest of their life. The findings indicated that residential types in old age need to be taken into account for both aging in place which referring to choosing to live where one has lived for years and referring to involuntarily staying where one has lived for years.

This research had been done the analysis of the itemized questionnaire by the needs of the physically handicapped for their better living environment and suggested the following remodeling devices. First of all, there was the priority for the remodeling of their living facilities. According to their priority, they wanted to remodel their bathroom, kitchen & dining room, veranda, living room, and hall way. These were based on their needs of movement, personal hygiene, convenient closet, and cabinet usage. In particular, their demands were shown as followings. The wheelchair using handicapped people required safe doorknobs, unslippery floor materials, removal of step levels, and heights adjustable washing stand for their bathroom. They also requested washboard, non-threshold, and automatic door locks. Otherwise, the disabled in critical condition who could not move anything preferred the remodeling of inner structure of living spaces and automatic door system. The slight disabled and the families those who have the disabled demanded the remodeling of kitchen & dining room, and preferred the reorganization of closet, cabinets, floor tiles, and turncock. The remodeling of bedroom was mostly requested by the disabled women, people with the brain disorder, and disabled people in critical condition who could not move anything. • Communication has increasingly become important between peoples in the modern society. The change in the composition of a family brought by urbanization and industrialization caused structural changes in the society, and the lack of communication between people have incited various social conflicts rising from individualism and ego-centrism. Thus in this era, domestic environment is one of the most significant environment that enables one to transform into an appropriate member of the social community as well as develop appropriate traits of one. The living room, which served as an arena of communication for family members is now replaced with TV, a popular media, and has lost its original role in the house. The living room furnitures today are designed to facilitate people in viewing TV, not to enhance communication between family members. Thus in this research, I would like to propose a new concept of 'communication furniture' and various examples to suggest appropriate, desired role of living room furniture in households today. In addition, I hope this research contributes to forming a beneficial living room culture and a domestic environment as well as a heart-warming, human society.

  • Studies on Trapa of Korean, Japanese, and Chinese origins have been generally limited to currently living Trapa, thereby demonstrating the lack of phylogenetic approaches. In the present study, we conducted a numerical taxonomic study on 34 Korean origin Trapa species newly discovered in peat deposits. By using the numerical taxonomy as well as geological data, we created an appearance map based on the periods and taxonomic groups of the Korean Trapa. Further, by using this appearance map, we reviewed the limitations that exist in the taxa and simultaneously discussed the adaptational environment of Trapa in each period. Although other studies have discussed new variants of Trapa worldwide, including T. litwinowii V. vassil. var. chihuensis S.F.Guan & Q.Lang of China (Guan and Lang, 1987), the present study is significant because it provides data on the origin of Korean Trapa species. The availability of such data is essential in determining the adaptational environment of the presently living Trapa. To our knowledge, this is the first report of approximately 10 newly discovered and other presently living species of Trapa. Further, the appearance map in the present study allows the use of the 10 newly discovered species and variants of 34 Trapa species indigenous to South Korea for over 1000 years, for a comparison with the currently living Trapa species. Thus, the present study results could serve as important basic data to understand the adaptational environment of the genus Trapa. from the past to the present in Korea.

  • The ubiquitous sensor network technique is widely applied to variety of information fields such as home automations, logistics, traffic controls, public administrations, health and environment monitoring and etc. It is particularly useful in the areas where energy consumption is minimal and where continuous monitoring of the surrounding environments, which generates streams of data, are required. In this study, we have designed and implemented a living environment automatic control system which collects the streams of temperature, humidity, light and noise data of a simulated house setting in real-time fashion, then controls the home environment based on the collected data according to the users favorites. In order to differentiate the proposed system from the currently existing similar system, we have demonstrated not only the feasibility of collecting data using sensor network in the controlled environment but also the ability to control the various household equipments through wireless communications.

  • Increased internet use under a ubiquitous environment may be called as a great human information space revolution followed by Industrial Revolution. This revolution is exerting its significant influence over all the industry as a whole with speed faster than that of any other times. Along with this trend, if furniture design field that leads living culture should fail to jump on this main stream without noticing it, it may be reduced to a unpopular field some day without any sign of recovery. Under this background, this study is intended to recognize a goal aiming at understanding our rapidly changing living environment and leading our way positively. Currently, our surrounding living environment is immersed in computers here and there and Mark Weiser once defined a system that moves in advance before an action as ubiquitous computing and in this respect, I am going to observe a detailed transformation process of space. First nature of the space may be defined as atoms, a physical space equivalent to a spatial element and Bits space that is untouchable is usually called as 2nd space and a combination of atoms and Bits is an intelligent space - 3rd space - that can be intelligible without touching it and finally, this space is called as a ubiquitous space. This spatial transformation is developed by several changes of living environment and we may call it as living trend or interior design trend. Transformation in terms of social perspective, space structural perspective and digital technique perspective may be enumerated. These transformations were surveyed based on its contents being implemented at a future housing exhibition hosted by 5 construction companies along with fusion of information furniture and furniture depending on each housing space. In conclusion, it could be realized that most of the companies were decorating future space by implementing ubiquitous environment as a success factor of future housing market. It may be meaningful to note once again that under an interior environment, a fusion of furniture and information furniture is required considering interior trend elements.
