  • Geosynthetic Clay Liners (GCLs) have been used for the applications of the hydraulic containment system in landfill due to inexpensive costs, simple workability and distinguished ability as a barrier material. However, bentonite of GCLs is easy to be damaged by the chemical solutions. Thus, there is a need to evaluate the potential susceptibility of GCLs causing Increase the hydraulic conductivity when GCLs are exposed to raw leachate and dissolved humic substances from landfill leachate. The hydraulic conductivity tests were performed with flexible-wall permeameter (the falling -headwater/rising -tailwater procedure) in order to verify the potential susceptibility of GCLs. The values of the hydraulic conductivity conducted with raw leachate as a permeant liquid increased considerably; however, The change of the hydraulic conductivity in the case of humic and fulvic acid were not worthy of notice. As the results of swelling tests of bentonite, however, humic substances can affect badly on the dispersion behavior of bentonite. These results indicate that humic substances dissolved in leachate could reduce the hydraulic conductivity of GCLs in landfill.

  • To understand and compare tracer transport in fractured and porous media. multiple tracer tests were conducted in Wonju and Uiwang sites. The target media were fractured in Wonju site and porous in Uiwang site. It was known that groundwater flow for the two hydrogeologic systems could be represented using a EPM approach. However, the tracer transport in the two aquifer systems was greatly different. In this study, we analyzed the different tracer transport behavior in the two systems, from which our understanding of the tracer dispersion was greatly enhanced. we used bromide and chloride as tracers.

  • In this paper, the role of intermediate cover soils with respect to the leachate and gas flow is investigated from various field investigations and the hydraulic conductivity of the disposed waste is obtained using pumping and slug tests. From the results of field investigations, it was found that the flow of leachate and gas is prevented by the buried cover soils. The hydraulic conductivities of field pumping test and slug tests are well matched and stayed in the range of hydraulic conductivities of well compacted wastes in the literature.

  • Three full-scale instrumented test slabs were constructed and tested using a heavy vehicle simulator (HVS) to evaluate the structural behavior of internally cured concrete (ICC) for use in pavements under Florida condition. Three mix designs selected from a previous laboratory testing program include the standard mixture with 0.40 water-cement ratio, the ICC with 0.32 water-cement ratio, and the ICC mixture with 0.40 water-cement ratio. Concrete samples were prepared and laboratory tests were performed to measure strength, elastic modulus, coefficient of thermal expansion and shrinkage properties. The environmental responses were measured using strain gages, thermocouples, and linear variable differential transformers instrumented in full-scale concrete slabs. A 3-D finite element model was developed and calibrated using strain data measured from the full-scale tests using the HVS. The results indicate that the ICC slabs were less susceptible to the change of environmental conditions and appear to have better potential performance based on the critical stress analysis.

  • The removal capacity of zero-valent iron for Cr(Ⅵ) was evaluated using batch kinetic tests. The rate constants for zero-valent iron dramatically increased as initial Cr(Ⅵ) concentration decreased. Generally, the reaction rates of Cr(Ⅵ) with zero-valent iron were faster than that of a biotic degradation of Cr(Ⅵ), and furthermore the reaction rates were inversely proportional to the initial Cr(Ⅵ) concentrations. After certain reaction time elapsed. no further decrease of Cr(Ⅵ) was observed, indicating a loss of iron reactivity. The loss of iron reactivity was primarily due to the passivation of iron surfaces with iron-Cr precipitates, but the reactivity of iron was recovered by adding iron-reducing bacteria. Even though the addition of bacteria itself removed Cr(Ⅵ), the combination of iron-reducing bactera and oxidized iron significantly enhanced the reaction rate for Cr(Ⅵ) removal. The results from column tests also confirmed that the innoculation of iron-reducing bacteria to the column containing completely oxidized iron partially enhanced the recovery of the iron reactivity.

  • In this study, the combined electrokinetic and ultrasonic remediation technique onto simple soil flushing was studied for the enhancement of water and liquid flows and the removal of contaminants in contaminated soils. The ultrasonic technique has been used to increase liquid flow and remove pollutants in contaminated soil. The laboratory soil flushing tests combined electrokinetic and ultrasonic technique were conducted using specially designed and fabricated devices to determine the effect of these both techniques. A series of laboratory permeability experiments involving the simple, electrokinetic, ultrasonic, and electrokinetic & ultrasonic flushing test were carried out. A soil admixed with sand and kaolin was used as a test specimen, and Pb and ethylene glycol were used as contaminants. An increase in out flow, permeability and contaminant removal rate was observed in electrokinetic and ultrasonic flushing tests.

  • The natural soil containing organic matter and ferrous is used in the Electrokinetic-Flushing Remediation(EFR) tests. A series of tests are carried out through controlling the concentration of acetic acid in the EFR cell. The test results showed that the electrical potential in X/L=0.9 is increased with the increasing of the concentration, and pH in the sample is the similar at all of the region because of the buffer capacity of natural soil. Finally, the efficiency of EFR is enhanced at acetic acid of 1mM. But it may not be not strongly affected by the concentration of acetic acid.

  • Concrete structures in the marine environment often deteriorate in the early stage of their service life because of contact with various aggressive conditions. In recent years, the researches on the concrete in the marine environment have been carried out to increase their service life. In this experimental study, the concrete specimens were prepared with various adding contents of inorganic antifouling agent$(0\~3.0wt\%)$ composed of some fluosilicate solution. For evaluation of the properties of concretes containing inorganic antifouling agent, various tests such as setting time, slump loss, compressive strength, water absorption rate, fleering and thawing resistance and SEM of concrete, were conducted. As the results, physical and chemical properties of concretes were improved with an adding of inorganic antifouling agent. From the results of various tests, the optimal adding contents of antifouling agent was $1.0wt\%$.

  • The concept for the decolorization in biological dye wastewater treatment systems is based on anaerobic treatment, for the reductive cleavage of the dyes' azo linkages, in combination with aerobic treatment, for the degradation of the products from azo dye cleavage, aromatic amines. Batch tests were conducted to examine the conditions and the factors affecting biological treatment of dye wastewater. From the tests, the removal efficiencies of organics and colors of dyeing wastewater were improved to $COD_{Cr}$ 27% and color 9% by injecting 10% of the domestic wastewater as a cosubstrate, and $COD_{Cr}$ 30%, color 22% with 30% injection of domestic wastewater. Therefore it was proved that decolorization efficiency is demonstrated with domestic wastewater as a cosubstrate. The analysis of aromatic amines in wastewater showed that decolorization was achieved by cometabolism while aromatic amines were produced by cleavage of azo bonds under anaerobic conditions and these products were removed in an aerobic tank subsequently.

  • Soils contaminated by hazardous hydrophobic organic compounds, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), have become a major environmental issue due to toxic and carcinogenic properties of those compounds. In this work, we investigated effects of various metabolic inducers on phenanthrene biodegradation. Biodegradation tests were peformed with two different Pseudomonads: Pseudononrdia hydrocarboxydans (Gram positive) and Pseudomonas putida (Gram negative). Intermediates of phenanthrene metabolism (1-hydroxy-2-naphthoate, salicylate, catechol, phthalate and protocatechuate) were selected as inducers. The tests indicated that 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoate was the most effective inducer and enhanced the phenanthrene degradation rate up to 5.7 times, even though all the others also had induction ability to some extent. The effective induction could be achieved even at a low concentration of 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoate. Addition of metabolic inducers would be an attractive trick for the successful bioremediation of PAH-contaminated soil.
