  • PCDDS and PCDFs are very stable chcmicals and have very long residence times in the environment and in organisms, including humans. Their hydrophobicity promotes accumulation in sediments and organisms, resulting in high concentrations in both sediments and organisms. Among toxicological effects reports arc teratogenicity, reduce reproduction, liver toxicity, decreased growth rate and behavioral changes (Zeise et al., 1990; Huff, 1992). PCDDs/DFs are inadvertently produced from various combustion sources and manufacturing processes, such as municipal solid waste incineration (Olie et at., 1977), motor vehicles (Marklund et al., 1987), steel mills (Tysklind et al., 1989), and chemical production processes (Hutzinger et al., 1985). • Eutrophication processes of aquatic environment are strictly correlated with the concentration levels of nitrogen, phosphorous, organic matter and biological parameters such as phytoplankton and chlorophylla (Tremel, 1996; Burns et al., 1997; Young et al. 1999; Wei et al.,2000). Accordingly, the monitoring and evaluation of these factors will provide useful information about the health of aquatic ecosystem. However, the traditional types of auqatic chemistry analysis and ecological monitoring of phytoplankton are time-consuming, costly, and further resulting in secondary pollution due to the use of reagents. NIR (near-infrared) spectroscopy, as a rapid, non-destructive, little sample preparation and reagents-free technology (Hildrum et al., 1992), has been extensively applied to the characterization of food (Osborne and Fearn, 1988), pharmaceutical (Morisseau and Rhodes, 1995) and textile materials (Clove et al.,2000). Currently, NIR technology has been used indirectly in inferring lake water chemistry by two approaches, suspended (Malley et al., 1996) or seston (Dabakk et al., 1999), and sediments (Korsman et al., 1992; Malley et al., 1999). In addition, the evaluation of trophic state and the identification of the key factors contributed to the trophication are the key step to restore the damaged aquatic environment. Moreover, an understanding of the factors, which regulate the algal proliferation, is crucial to the successful management of aquatic ecosystem. In the paper, NIR technology will be used to study the environmental factors affecting the algal proliferation in combination with the trophic state index and diversity index. This novel developed system can be applied in monitoring and evaluating allopathic water environment and provide real time information services for the aquatic environment management.

  • To have global competitiveness in newly growing industry, good quality R&D's in convergence technology arerequired. Korean government also started to emphasize the importance of convergence technology as a new engine of growth for the future development. Since 2008, worldwide energy crisis and concerns on low carbon green growth made people focus on the convergence between information technology (IT) and energy technology (ET). However, the R&D performance comparison among the convergence technologies is not well explored so far. Therefore, this study uses Korea's patent citation database to measure the R&D performance of convergence technologies. We adopt technology development cycle, technology spillover analysis, and technology diffusion analysis to see the knowledge flow from R&D industry to others. We find that IT_ET convergence technology generally shows higher R&D performance than other convergence technologies. Contrary to public belief, convergence R&D by big companies has relatively low performance especially measures in technology spillover and technology diffusion. This implies that they might concentrate on delicate Fuel Cell Energy/Environment Technology (FEIT) or Nano Environment/Energy Information Technology (NEIT) rather than general energy information technologies. We also find that Korea's chemical industry may play a crucial role for the growth of other convergence technologies.

  • Cyclone separators are widely used for cleaning gas streams or for catalyst recovery. For many years, the complexity of the gas flow pattern in cyclones has been a matter of many experimental and theoretical work. At present, precise flow measurements have been performed by means of LDA and hot-wire anemometry (Patterson and Munz, 1996; Hoekstra et al., 1999; Peng et al., 2002). In the theoretical work, Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes are frequently employed for simulating cyclone gas-particle flows(Hoekstra et al., 1999). (omitted)

  • The EtOAc and $H_2O$ soluble fractions of Katsura tree (Cercidiphyllum japonicum Sieb. Et Zucc) bark extracts were chromatographed on a Sephadex LH-20 column with various aqueous MeOH. Gallic acid (1), methyl galate (2), kurigalin (3), 1,2,3,6-tetra-O-galloyl-${\beta}$-D-glucose (4) and 1,2,3,4,6-penta-O-galloyl-${\beta}$-D-glucose (5) were isolated from EtOAc fraction. Isocorilagin (6) and methyl galate (2) were separated from $H_2O$ fraction. The structure determination was done by $^1H$ and $^{13}C$ NMR. Of these isolated compounds, methyl galate (2), kurigalin (3) and isocorilagin (6) were isolated, for the first time, from the bark extracts of Cercidiphyllum japonicum.

  • This study aims to find out the types of convergence types between devices/technology and artifact in smart city space. The main contents of the research are in-depth analysis on the convergence change of ET, IT, and ET+IT in a smart city. First, the devices/technology and artifacts through 31 cases study are found out below. There are 92 artifacts and 134 devices/technologies (ET:83, IT:51). Second, the convergence change between devices/technology and artifacts is evolved by 7 types. Type 1, the Evolutionary ET type of ET-centric, is Period 1 (Separation fusion between ET and IT), Period 2 (ET-centric fusion), and Period 3 (Growth IT and ET+IT fusion of ET-centric). Type 2, the Advanced ET type of ET+IT-centric, is Period 1 (ET+IT fusion), Period 2 (Advanced ET of ET+IT-centric), and Period 3 (Hyper-advanced ET of ET+IT-centric). Type 3, the All-in-One type of ET+IT, is Period 1 (Separation fusion between ET and IT), Period 2 (Mixed fusion between ET and IT), and Period 3 (All-in-One fusion of ET and IT). Type 4, the Advanced type of IT-centric, is Period 1 (Development of IT-centric), Period 2 (Advanced IT-centric), and Period 3 (Hyper-advanced IT-centric). Types 5 and 6, the Advanced together type of ET+IT, is Period 1 (Developed IT of ET+IT-centric), Period 2 (Advanced IT of ET+IT-centric), and Period 3 (Hyper-advanced IT of ET+IT-centric). Type 7, the Advanced IT type of ET+IT-centric, is Period 1 (ET+IT fusion), Period 2 (Sub-fusion of ET, Advanced IT), and Period 3 (Sub-fusion of ET, Hyper-advanced IT). This study results are going to expect making new types of convergence through further study.

  • HO$_2$ radical plays pivotal roles in the tropospheric $O_3$ formation chemistry. This radical oxidizes NO to NO$_2$ and thus HO$_2$ radical can lead to in-situ ozone formation. Numerous methods have been tried to measure concentrations of atmospheric HO$_2$ in gas phase. Detecting methods applied in the air are a chemical amplifier (Cantrell et al., 1996), FAGE (Fluorescence Assay with Gas Expansion) (Hard et al., 1984), and LIF (Laser-induced Fluorescence) (Stevens et al., 1994). These methods have been limited because of low sensitivity and interferences such as $O_3$, NO, and itself (Stevens et al.,1994). (omitted)

  • The dye wastewater discharge from the textile industries mainly affects the aquatic environment. Hence, the treatment of this wastewater is essential for a pollutant-free environment. The purpose of this research is to optimize the dye removal efficiency for process influencing independent variables such as pH, electrolysis time (ET), and current density (CD) by using Box-Behnken design (BBD) optimization and Genetic Algorithm (GA) modelling. The electrocoagulation treatment technique was used to treat the synthetically prepared Reactive Black dye solution under batch mode potentiometric operations. The percentage of error for the BBD optimization was significantly greater than for the GA modelling results. The optimum factors determined by GA modelling were CD-59.11 mA/cm2, ET-24.17 minutes, and pH-8.4. At this moment, the experimental and predicted dye removal efficiencies were found to be 96.25% and 98.26%, respectively. The most and least predominant factors found by the beta coefficient were ET and pH respectively. The outcome of this research shows GA modeling is a better tool for predicting dye removal efficiencies as well as process influencing factors.
