  • Characteristics of heat transfer were investigated in a three-phase swirling fluidized bed whose diameter was 0.102 m and 2.5 m in height. Effects of gas and liquid velocities, particle size and liquid swirling ratio ($R_S$) on the immersed heater-to-bed overall heat transfer coefficient were examined. The heat transfer characteristics between the immersed heater and the bed was well analyzed by means of phase space portraits and Kolmogorov entropy(K) of the time series of temperature difference fluctuations. The phase space portraits of temperature difference fluctuations became stable and periodic and the value of Kolmogorov entropy tended to decrease with increasing the value of liquid swirling ratio from 0.1 to 0.4. The value of Kolmogorov entropy exhibited its minimum with increasing liquid swirling ratio. The value of overall heat transfer coefficient (h) showed its maximum with the variation of liquid velocity, bed porosity or liquid swirling ratio, but it increased with increasing gas velocity and particle size. The value of K exhibited its maximum at the liquid velocity at which the h value attained its maximum. The overall heat transfer coefficient and Kolmogorov entropy were well correlated in terms of dimensionless groups and operating variables.

  • We have evaluated the hydroxyl group-solvent specific interactions by using a Lichrosorb RP18 stationary phase and by measuring the retention data of carefully selected solutes in 50/50, 60/40, 70/30, 80/20, and 90/10(v/v%) methanol/water eluents at 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, and 50 ${^{\circ}C}$. The selected solutes are 3 positional isomers of phenylpropanol, that is, 1-phenyl-1-propanol, 1-phenyl-2-propanol, and 3-phenyl-1-propanol. There exist clear discrepancies in ${\Delta}H^o$ (solute transfer enthalpy from the mobile to the stationary phase) and $T{\Delta}S^o$ (solute transfer entropy) among positional isomers. The difference in ${\Delta}H^o$ and $T{\Delta}S^o$ between secondary alcohols (1-phenyl-1-propanol and 1-phenyl-2-propanol)is negligible compared to the difference between the primary alcohol (1-phenyl-3-propanol) and secondary alcohols. The $T{\Delta}S^o$ values of 3-phenyl-1-propanol are close to those of butylbenzene while the $T{\Delta}S^o$ values of secondary alcohols are close to those of propylbenzene. The difference in ${\Delta}{\Delta}H^o$ (specific solute-mobile phase interaction enthalpy) between the primary alcohol and the secondary alcohol decreases with increase of methanol content in the mobile phase. A unique observation is an extremum for 1-phenyl-3-propanol in the plot of $T{\Delta}{\Delta}S^o$ vs. methanol volume %. The positive sign of $T{\Delta}{\Delta}S^o$ of 3-phenyl-1-propanol implies that the entropy of 3-phenyl-1-propanol is greater than that of the hypothetical alkylbenzene (the same size and shape as phenylpropanol) in the mobile phase.

  • Four polymorphic forms (I, II, III and IV) of hydrochlorothiazide have been characterized on the basis of x-ray diffractometry and differential thermal analysis. Form I was obtained by crystallization from N, N-dimethylformamide and Form II was crystallized from hot methanol. Form III was precipitated from sodium hydroxide aqueous solution by treatment with hydrochloric acid and Form IV was crystallized from 50% methanol. The metastable form I was a most stable form among four polymorphs, which was stable more than ten months at room temperature. The thermodynamic parameters such as heat of solution, enthalpy, entropy, free energy difference and transition temperature were determined by the measurement of intrinsic dissolution rate. The transition temperature and the heat of transition between the metastable Form I an Form II were determined to be $299.15^{\circ}$K and 5.03 Kcal/mole, respectively and free energy difference ($\delta$ F) was 302. 13 cal/mole. Diuretic action of these four polymorphic forms was also evaluated by monitoring the difference in urinary excretion of sodium, potassium and magnesium in rats.

  • We studied how linear and nonlinear heart rate dynamics differ between normal fetuses and uncomplicated small-forgestational age (SGA) fetuses, aged 32-40 weeks' gestation. We analyzed each fetal heart rate time series for 20 min and quantified the complexity (nonlinear dynamics) of each fetal heart rate (FHR) time series by approximate entropy (ApEn) and correlation dimension (CD). The linear dynamics were analyzed by canonical correlation analysis (CCA). The ApEn and CD of the uncomplicated SGA fetuses were significantly lower than that of the normal fetuses in all three gestational periods (32-34, 35-37, 38-40 weeks). Canonical correlation ensemble in SGA fetuses is slightly higher than normal ones in all three gestational periods, especially at 35-37 weeks. Irregularity and complexity of the heart rate dynamics of SGA fetuses are lower than that of normal ones. Also, canonical ensemble in SGA fetuses is higher than in normal ones, suggesting that the FHR control system has multiple complex interactions. Along with the clear difference between the two groups' non-linear chaotic dynamics in FHR patterns, we clarified the hidden subtle differences in linearity (e.g. canonical ensemble). The decrease in non-linear dynamics may contribute to the increase in linear dynamics. The present statistical methodology can be readily and routinely utilized in Obstetrics and Gynecologic fields.

  • The molar optical rotation of poly(cis-5-methylproline) was measured in solvent mixtures of chloroform and chloroethanol. After proper allowance for time-dependent mutarota-tions, equilibrium states between form A and form B were observed to occur with a solvent composition of 0.5~10 % chloroethanol in chloroform by volume. From the equilibrium constants, which were calculated by optical rotations at equilibrium measured at three different temperatures (5, 25, and 45 $^{circ}$C), the thermodynamic parameters-free enthalpy, enthalpy and entropy changes for the mutarotation-were evaluated. It was found that starting with equimolar concentrations of form A and form B, the forward mutarotation occurred in the solvent compositions of chloroethanol greater than 3 % by volume, whereas the reverse mutarotation resulted in solvent compositions of chloroethanol less than 3 % by volume. The changes in enthalpy and entropy for the forward mutarotation were found to be positive, while those were for the reverse mutarotation were negative. The driving forces for the forward mutarotation were found to be the increase in entropy, whereas that for the reverse mutarotation was the negative enthalpy change. The thermodynamic data were explained by the interaction between polymer and solvent, i.e., preferential hydrogen bonding of chloroethanol with the carbonyl group in form B over form A, and by difference in conformational energies between form A and form B.

  • In this paper, a complexity-balancing algorithm is proposed for distributed video coding based on entropy coding. In order to reduce complexity of DVC-based decoders, the proposed method employs an entropy coder instead of channel coders and the complexity-balancing method is designed to improve RD performance with minimal computational complexity. The proposed method performs motion estimation in the decoder side and transmits the estimated motion vectors to the encoder. The proposed encoder can perform more accurate refinement using the transmitted motion vectors from the decoder. During the motion refinement, the optimal predicted motion vectors are decided by the received motion vector and the predicted motion vectors and complexity load of block is allocated by adjusting the search range based on the difference between the received motion vector and the predicted motion vectors. The computational complexity of the proposed encoder is decreased 11.9% compared to the H.264/AVC encoder and that of the proposed decoder are reduced 99% compared to the conventional DVC decoder.

  • Wave directional spectrum estimation methods for irregular waves were considered in this study. Until now, the Longuet-Higgins Method (LHM) initiated by Longuet-Higgins et al. (1963) has been widely used, but resolutions of the estimation were found to be low. Kobune's Maximum Entropy Method (MEM) for the estimation of wave directional spectrum, bas-ed on the entropy Principle showed higher resolutions comparing with the LHM . If the wave directional spectrum is of Delta functions, the MEM is exact in its estimation. It was also found that for a unimodal spectrum, if the Mitsuyasu's spreading coefficient is above 5, the estimation resolutions were high. In bimodal spectrum, as the angle difference between the two peaks increased, the resolution improved. The energy seems to transfer to the smoother peak in the smoothing of peak's peakedness. LHM has a tendency to estimate bimodal spectrum as a unimodal spectrum ; thus, except for its computational speed, the resolution of LHM falls far below that of MEM.

  • Salient information extraction from multi-view videos is a very challenging area because of inter-view, intra-view correlations, and computational complexity. There are several techniques developed for keyframes extraction from multi-view videos with very high computational complexities. In this paper, we present a keyframes extraction approach from multi-view videos using entropy and complexity information present inside frame. In first step, we extract representative shots of the whole video from each view based on structural similarity index measurement (SSIM) difference value between frames. In second step, entropy and complexity scores for all frames of shots in different views are computed. Finally, the frames with highest entropy and complexity scores are considered as keyframes. The proposed system is subjectively evaluated on available office benchmark dataset and the results are convenient in terms of accuracy and time complexity.

  • Background: Texture analysis has been used as a method for quantifying image properties based on textural features. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the usefulness of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) texture analysis for the evaluation of viable ovarian tissue on the perfusion map of ovarian endometriosis. Methods: To generate a normalized perfusion map, subtracted T1-weighted imaging (T1WI), T1WI and contrast-enhanced T1W1 with sequences were performed using the same parameters in 25 patients with surgically confirmed ovarian endometriosis. Integrated density is defined as the sum of the values of the pixels in the image or selection. We investigated the parameters for texture analysis in ovarian endometriosis, including angular second moment (ASM), contrast, correlation, inverse difference moment (IDM), and entropy, which is equivalent to the product of area and mean gray value. Results: The perfusion ratio and integrated density of normal ovary were 0.52±0.05 and 238.72±136.21, respectively. Compared with the normal ovary, the affected ovary showed significant differences in total size (p<0.001), fractional area ratio (p<0.001), and perfusion ratio (p=0.010) but no significant differences in perfused tissue area (p=0.158) and integrated density (p=0.112). In comparison of parameters for texture analysis between the ovary with endometriosis and the contralateral normal ovary, ASM (p=0.004), contrast (p=0.002), IDM (p<0.001), and entropy (p=0.028) showed significant differences. A linear regression analysis revealed that fractional area had significant correlations with ASM (r2=0.211), IDM (r2=0.332), and entropy (r2=0.289). Conclusion: MRI texture analysis could be useful for the evaluation of viable ovarian tissues in patients with ovarian endometriosis.

  • The defining of weather forecasting regions is possible. since the representativeness of regional weather can by reasonably clarified in terms of weather entropy and the use of information ratio. In this paper, the weather entropy and information ratio were derived numerially from using the information theory. The typical weather characteristics were clarified and defined in the homogeneous weather forecasting regions of the southern parts of Korea. The data used for this study are the daily precipitation and cloudiness during the recent five years (1990-1994) at 42 stations in southern parts of Korea. It is divided into four classes of fine, clear, cloudy and rainy. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The maximum value of weather entropy in study area is 2.009 vits in Yosu in July, and the minimum one is 1.624 bits in Kohung in October. The mean value of weather entropy is maximal in July, on the other hand, minimal in October during four season. The less the value of entropy is, the stabler the weather is. While the bigger the value of entropy is, the more changeable the weather is. 2. The deviation from mean value of weather entropy in southern parts of Korea, with the positive and the negative parts, shows remarkably the distributional tendency of the east (positive) and the west (negative) in January but of the south (positive) and the north (negative) in July. It also clearly shows the distributional tendency of the east (postive) and the west(negative) in the coastal region in April, and of X-type (southern west and northern east: negative) in Chiri Mt. in October. 3. In southern parts, the average information ratio maximaly appear 0.618 in Taegu area in July, whereas minimally 0.550 in Kwangju in October. Particularly the average information ratio of Pusan area is the greatest in April, but the smallest in October. And in Taegu, Kwangju, and Kunsan, it is the greatest in April, January, and July, but the smallest in Jyly, July, and pril. 4.The narrowest appreance of weather representativeness is in July when the Kwangju is the center of the weather forecasting. But the broadest one is in April when Taegu is the center of weather forecasting. 5. The defining of weather forecasting regions in terms of the difference of information ratio most broadly shows up in July in Pusan including the whole Honam area and the southern parts of Youngnam when the Pusan-Taegu is the basis of the application of information ratio. Meanwhile, it appears most broadly in January in Taegu including the whole southern parts except southern coastal area.
