Reorganization on the Subway Entrance System in Seoul for Better Pedestrian Environment (서울시 지하철 역사 출입구의 보행환경 개선방안)

  • Purpose: Subway in Seoul, Korea is an important urban mass transportation system as it carries more than 4 million people a day. To support this important mission, subway entrances were designed and installed to maximize accessibility to the stations. However, a uniform plan by the national government guided quantity and layout of the subway entrances. Therefore, the plan did not consider unique characteristics of each station area and reorganization of the subway entrance system is required to improve pedestrian environment. Method: This study grouped the subway entrances into specific patterns to propose reorganizing schemes. The authors conducted field surveys, examined case studies and proposed an entrance reorganizing plan for each type. Result: The study recommends subway entrances be installed inside adjacent building when large commercial or office complexes are nearby. The authors proposed installing a bridge connecting the stations and adjacent buildings for elevated entrances. This would be only possible when there are commercial or office facilities nearby with enough floor space. The study summarizes the pros and cons of each solution. To translate our proposals into realities, various incentives should be given to building or land owners. This study made suggestions as to which kinds of incentives exist and be effective in a range of situations.

  • Turner and Penn (1) from UCL have proved that Visibility Graph Analysis (VGA) can be used as a more accurate method to predict the pedestrian distribution in building spaces. However, this methodology neglects certain elements that are of special influence on pedestrian distribution in buildings, especially the entrances and exits. Based on Space Syntax, this dissertation improves on the traditional method of Visibility Graph Analysis, using three shopping centers in Shenzhen as examples, attempts to explore a new parameter - "attenuation index of pedestrians at the entrances and exits" - using relevant data of the entrances and exits of the three cases, and combines it with traditional VGA analysis through weighted calculation, in order to provide more accurate predictions of pedestrian patterns in shopping centers.

  • In order to find out the most favorable shape and structure of pot for crab, Charybdis japonica Edwards, the common box type and cylinder type of net pots with two entrances, and the modified cone type and box type of net ones with four were prepared respectively. Then, the ability of the above pots attracting the crab into them and their catches were investigated through tank and field experiments. The attracting ability was higher in pots with four entrances than those with two. In case of two entrance pots, the ability was a little higher in the cylinder type than in the box type. But in four entrance pots, the box type yielded a little higher ability than the cone type. The catches were also arranged by the pots in almost same order with the attracting ability. But, it was only added to the arrangement that the cone type with four entrances had no significant difference of catch with the cylinder type with two entrances. Thus, the most favorable pot for the crab was concluded to be the box type with four entrances.

  • In this research, we determine the proper number of entrances in the evacuation facilities for civil and military personnel. The current standards on the emergency evacuation facility only sets the number of possible evacuees and the according architectural floor area since the evacuation have been completed. However, other than static standards such as the floor area, there is needs to consider the dynamic standards along with allowable evacuation time such as the number of entrance, staircases and so on. Therefore, we need to consider the number of entrances and their location in order to account for the allowed evacuation time of particular number of people in a set area. The outcome could be contributed to the standards which should contain the dynamic conditions associated with evacuation.

  • The behavior of conger eel, Astroconger myriaste(Brevoort), to the net pots with baits was investigated alternately in two experimental water tanks. One of the pots being dropped on the tank bottom, the eels increased rapidly in number of touching the pot to show a maximum whithin 30 minutes and then decreased gradually. The enterings of eels into the pots were also made mainly within 30 minutes and easier in pots with lower entrances. But the complete enterings were decided by the passage of eel tails through the pot entrances and so the eels retreated frequently after attemping to enter the pots, especially in pots small in the interval between the entrances and the baits or in pots with flappers. However, most of enterings encouraged the touches and earlier enterings ascribed earlier production of maximum touch. The eels, if entered the pots without flappers, got out of the pots relatively easily and the getting-out was easier in pots with lower entrances. On the other hand, the eels entered the pot with flappers could not get out of the pots. A comparison between the circular and square pots gave that the guidance of eels to the entrances was easier in the former and the passing of eels through the entrances in the latter, not only at the inside of pots but also at the outside. The general behavior of eels in touching or entering the net pots in the above results was almost equal to that on the bamboo and plastic pots in the previous paper.

  • The prediction of wave setup is an important part of modelling coastal inundation and flooding in coastal rivers but there are still some gaps in our knowledge particularly with respect to the conditions in river entrances. One of the reasons that wave setup is still not fully understood, almost fifty years after it was first observed in the field and subsequently reported by Thorndike Saville (1961) and by Dorrestein (1961), is that it is difficult to measure accurately in the field.   • The behavior of crab, Charybdis japonica h. Milne EDWARDS, to the net pots with baits was investigated alternately in the experimental tanks. One of the pots being dropped on the tank bottom, the crabs touched it to obtain the bait probably reacted by their senses of smell and sight, and increased gradually in the number of touch to show a maximum within 30 min. The crabs, if touched circular pots, were guided more easily to the pot entrances than the case of touching square ones, but the guidance from the vicinity of the entrances into the pots was easier in the square. When the crabs entered the pots, they always showed a sharp precaution. However, most of enterings were made mainly within 30 minutes and easier in pots with lower entrances. If 30 min. elapsed, the entering was little made by the decrease in the number of touch and the getting-out was remarkable, especially in pots with low entrances. But, in all the pots the getting-out was hampered by the drawing of the entrance tips into the pots. In case in which flappers were attached to the entrance tips, the entering was very hampered, hut the getting-out was not shown.

  • The purpose of posted speeds is to provide a speed that ensures the safety of vehicle flow according to given road situations. Because of this, posted speeds must be carefully examined, and posted speeds at freeway exits and entrances in particular should consider car characteristics. Posted speeds at freeway exits and entrances must take changing speeds due to curve radiuses into consideration and in this study, an 85th percentile speed becomes the most important element to consider. When it is considered that most traffic accidents occur because of variations in speed between cars, posted speeds should be set after considering car traveling characteristics. Within these dimensions, instead of putting significance on an upper direction regulation or lower direction regulation, speed distributions which fit to the characteristics of each road should be fully considered. Accordingly, this study evaluated appropriate posted speeds that will reduce the dangers of traffic accidents through posted speed regulations of roads now in operation by offering a posted speed setting method theory, using entries at Yangji, Yongin, and Cheongwon interchanges as subjects.

A Study on the Design Types and Characteristics of Apartment Entrances - Focus on Whasung Dongtan Apartments - (아파트 동출입구 디자인 유형 및 특성에 관한 연구 - 화성동탄신도시 시범지구 및 1, 2공구 아파트를 중심으로 -)

  • In recent years, the architectural interest in the apartment design has been getting focused on qualitative improvement and design differentiation. Especially the facade design differentiation is one of the most important elements in this matter. The purpose of this study is to provide the basic informations that can be referenced when architects are dealing with exterior design by analyzed design types and characteristics of apartment entrances. Target apartment of this study was whasung dongtan the 2nd phase new city districts which was planned to solve a housing shortage in the capital region. Having examined eleven pilot districts, four 1st construction areas, and eight 2nd construction areas, - total 23 complexes - 282 apartment entrances in 212 apartment buildings were carefully researched. Apartment entrance design can be divided into 15 different design elements: design types and combination types, direction, shape, height, approach types, exterior wall finishes of entrance, exterior wall finishes of lower parts of apartment, handrail types of slope, floor finishes of slope, distribution ratio of piloti, ceiling height of piloti, floor finishes of piloti, space use of piloti, window establishment between piloti and elevator hall, landscape elements of piloti. Design characteristics of building entrances were also analyzed in 4 groups (I, II, III, IV) divided by construction contractors ranking. In conclusion, first, design types and combination types can be classified into 15 different kinds, and the group I and II tend to show wider variety of entrance combinations. Secondly, the height and volume of extrude entrance type tend to increase in the group I and II. Third, the spatial configuration of pilotis appears to show more of 'pass + store + break' rather than 'access', as we get closer to the group I.

Research on the Correlation Between Rail Transit Entrances and Urban Form in High-Density Areas

  • The transport system and its infrastructure are not only the fundamental means of sustaining the operation of contemporary cities, but also important drivers for the evolution of urban form. Rail transit, critical to improving the operational efficiency and optimizing the spatial layout in cities, is one of the critical conditions for high-density areas with limited land and concentrated resources to be compact to take on complex challenges. As a node element of infrastructure, rail transit entrances are the most important points connecting the rail transit system with urban space. Although influenced by urban form, their quantity and location also influence and shape the evolution of urban space form. Based on the development gap of high-density areas in various contexts, focusing on various rail transit stations in Asia, this research analyzes the correlation between rail transit entrances and peripheral high-density urban form in a delicate, dynamic and granular way. The research considers both horizontal and vertical perspectives, in combination with the urban evolution process in time series, to explore the development trend of high-density urban form in Asia from the aspect of correlation, and building a new foundation for research on urban form, suitable for different types of cities.
