  • The spinel Ihelzolite of ultramafic xenoliths are found in the alkali basalt from eastern part of the Cheju island, Korea. The xenolith is are mainly composed of olivine, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene and spinel. Based on the chemical compositions of the constituent minerals, the ultramafic xenolith belong to upper mantle peridotite. Each minerals have a protogranular texture. Olivine with kink band texture partly shows undulatory extinction. Some clinopyroxenes have spongy textured rims. Brown spinels occur in the interstices between olivine and pyroxene grains. Olivine is mostly forsterite $(Fo_{89-90})$. Orthopyroxene is enstatite $(Wo_{1.3}En_{88.4}Fs_{10.3})$ with 3.87~5.25 wt% $Al_{2}O_{3}$. Clinopyroxene is diopside $(Wo_{48.0}En_{46.2}Fs_{5.8})$ with 6.75~5.03 wt% $Al_{2}O_{3}$. Spinel has the Mg value of 75.9 and its Cr-number is 10.2. According to the PoT estimations for the mantle xenoliths, equilibrium temperatures of the xenoliths range from 1023 to $1038^{\circ}C$ and pressure is 18 kbar. Spinellhelzolite from this area, which is characterized by lower Cr-number (10.2) and homogeneous chemical compositions, supports that these ultramafic xenoliths are derived from the upper mantle.

  • The possibility of using bulk talc as molding material was reviewed and tested with the measurement of thermal properties and computer simulations. The measured thermal conductivity and heat diffusivity($k{\rho}c$) of talc were $2.4W/m^{\circ}C$ and $6.6{\times}10^6J^2/m^4^{\circ}C^2s$, respectively. Thermal properties of talc could be ranked between those of sand mold and iron mold. Talc transforms into cristobalite and enstatite at $910^{\circ}C$, During the transformation volume and structure change, cracks appear on the surface and distortion occurs. Therefore talc can be used for molding material below $910^{\circ}C$ if carefully treated. Computer simulation was carried out to test whether talc insert could promote directional solidification in sand mold and iron mold. In sand mold, it was possible to achieve directional solidification of thin plate casting with the length to thickness ratio of 15, if both iron insert and talc insert were used. In iron mold, it was possible to achieve directional solidification only with talc insert.

  • This study has examined closely on the various foundamental conditions for the fitting in steatite porcelain as a industrial porcelain of superior quality, and as a decorated porcelain. The materials consisting of the Kyul Sung talc, and the sea water magnesia clinker power which was produced from Sam Hwa-Hwa Sung, as major constituents have been used, and also used Hyup Jin kaolin as clay minerals to give them plasticity. First, the mixture was made of corresponding in the theoretical composition of enstatite with Kyul sung talc and sea water magnesia clinker, and kaolin was added in various kinds of 1%, 2.5% 5%, 10%, and 20% by weight of the mixture. Next, the mixture was fired at the various temperatures from 1330 to 145$0^{\circ}C$. After we examined closely the physical properties and microstructures, we achieved the results that noted from this study were listed below. 1. The addition amount of kaolin should generally be from 5% to 10% by weight of the mixture to give mixture plasticity in steatite porcelain, but preferably about 20% to consider the firing temperature. 2. The temperature of the optimum firing range is from 1390 C to 142$0^{\circ}C$. 3. A case, which the $A_2$ composition had been fired at 142$0^{\circ}C$, showed a good effect in the strength, but showed a bad result in the absorption. Therefore, the specimens of $A_4$ the composition has excellent in properties of matters when the composition is fired at 142$0^{\circ}C$. Also, we consider that the specimens of the $A_5$ composition, which is fired at 139$0^{\circ}C$, is suitable for the $MgO-SiO_2$ porcelain bodies with respect to the various properties.

  • Mantle xenoliths in alkali basalt at Boun, the Gansung area and Baegryung Island in South Korea are spinel lherzolites composed of olivine, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, and spinel. Minerals show homogeneous compositions. Olivine compositions have Fo$_{89.0}$ to Fo$_{90.2}$, low CaO (0.03 to 0.12 wt%), and NiO of 0.34 to 0.40 wt%; the orthopyroxene is enstatite with En$_{89.0}$ to En$_{90.0}$ and Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$ of 4 to 5 wt%; the clinopyroxene is diopside with En$_{47.2}$ to En$_{49.1}$ and Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$ of 7.42 to 7.64 wt% from Boun and 4.70 to 4.91 wt% from Baegryung. Spinel chemistry shows a distinct negative trend, with increaeing Al corresponding with decreasing Cr, and Mg$^{#}$ (100Mg/Mg+Fe) and Cr$^{#}$ (100Cr/Cr+Al) of 75.1 to 81.9 and 8.5 to 12.6, respectively. The equilibrium temperatures of these xenoliths, taken as the average obtained from those of Mercier (1980) and Sachtleben and Seck (1981), lie between 970 and 1020$^{\circ}$C, and equilibrium pressures derived from Mercier (1980) fall within the range of 12 to 19 kbar (i.e., 42 to 63 km). These temperatures and pressures are reinforced by considerations of the Al-isopleths in the MAS system (Lane and Ganguly, 1980), as adjusted for the Fe effect on Al solubility in orthopyroxene (Lee and Ganguly, 1988). The equilibrium temperatures and pressures of xenoliths, as considered in P/T space, belong to the oceanic geotherm, based upon the various mantle geotherms presented by Mercier (1980). This geotherm is completely different from continental geotherms, e.g., from South Africa (Lesotho) and southern India. Mineral compositions of spinel-lherzolites in South Korea and eastern China are primitive; paleo-geotherms of both are quite similar, but degrees of depletion of the upper mantle could vary locally. This is demonstrated by eastern China, which has various depleted xenoliths caused by different degrees of partial melting.

  • We investigated the effect of dry grinding of laterite on the extraction of nickel and cobalt. The major chemical compositions of the sample for this work were $SiO_2$, $Fe_2O_3$ and MgO. The sample contained 0.81% Ni and 0.02% Co. The major minerals of the sample were lizardite and quartz with minor amounts of forsterite and enstatite. The mean particle size, specific surface area and density of the ground sample decreased with increasing grinding time, while the amorphization of lizardite increased as identified by XRD analysis. The grinding enabled the extraction ratio of Ni and Co to increase by the breakdown of Mg-OH bonding in the lizardite structure. However, physical properties of quartz were not changed by grinding. The extraction ratio of Ni and Co increased with increasing grinding time. Approximately 80% of Ni and Co were extracted regardless of the kind of acid solutions when the sample was ground for 60 minutes.

  • An attempt was made to derive a possible synthetic mechanism of Fluoro-phlogopite (Mica, 4Mg.$Al_2O_3$.$6SiO_2$.$K_2O$.$2MgF_2$) The pevention of fluorine vaporization turned out to be the key in the synthesis of Mica in question.l Consequently the quinary system of Mica was seperately synthesized ; frist 4MgO.$Al_2O_3-6SiO_2$(ternary system) was sintered at 135$0^{\circ}C$ and $K_2O$ and $MgF_2$ were added and second 4MgO.$Al_2O_3-6SiO_2$.$K_2O$ (quarternary system) was heat-treated at 135$0^{\circ}C$ and $MgF_2$ was added. The ternary system resulted in Proto-enstatite Cordierite and Spinel phases while Forsterite and Leucite were shown in the quarternay system . In both methods Fluoro-phlogopite was systhesized but the solid state reactions to form Mica from the ternary system and the quarternary system were different. High temperature reactions in the formation of Mica were investigated employing XRD, DTA and SEM The study of the synthesis of Mica indirectly suggested a method of phase analysis of quinary system(MgO-$Al_2O_3-SiO_2-K_2O-MgF_2$) and quarternary system(MgO-$Al_2O_3-SiO_2-K_2O-MgF_2$) at various temperatures.

  • The Gemological characteristics of B.C. jade from Cassiar Mine, British Colombia, Canada, have been investigated, using polarizing microscopy, Mohs' hardness, refractive index and density measurements, X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, ICP-MS, Infrared absorption spectrometry, and DTA/TGA. The B.C. jade is deeply green (spinach peen or olive green) in color and is translucent. It shows a resinous or waxy luster. The principal mineral of the material is tremolite-actinolite solid solution and minor amount of Cr-garnet and unidentified opaque minerals are accompanied. Mohs' hardness value ($5.5{\sim}6$). refractive index (1.62), and specific gravity (3.01) are measured. It is very highly tough and shows hackly fracture. The high Fe content ($Fe_2O_3\;4.14{\sim}4.66\;wt%$) in B.C. jade is attributable to a deepening of green color of the material. The B.C. jade starts to dehydrate at v and dehydration is completed at $1000.8^{\circ}C$, transforming tremolite-actinolite solid solution to enstatite, diopside, quartz, and water in its place. This possible reaction is supported by the weight loss of B.C. jade (1.93 wt%) at $1000.8^{\circ}C$ indicated by TGA curve.

  • Li-bearing hectorite, one member of trioctahedral smectite, occurred large in quantity and confirmed in Turkey western sedimentary boron deposit. Li-bearing hectorite attracted a particular attention because it is one of potential lithium resources. There have been no consensus for the change of hectorite due to heat and acid treatment although it is very important to use in industrial application. In this study, we examined changes of hectorite after heat and acid treatment as well as acid treatement followed by heating. We used clay ores collected in Bigadic deposit, which contained the highest $Li_2O$ content in Turkey boron deposits. Hectorite showed a strong endothermic reaction at $84^{\circ}C$ due to dehydration of absorbed water and interlayer water and a weak endothermic reaction above $600^{\circ}C$ owing to dehydration of crystallization water. The first endothermic reaction accompanied a large weight loss about 6%. Hectorite decomposed into enstatite, cristobalite and amorphous Fe material at $762^{\circ}C$ with exothermic reaction. When hectorite reacted with 3 kinds of 0.1 M acid during 1 hours, it had a good dissolution efficiency with $H_2SO_4{\geq}HCl$ > $HNO_3$ in order.

  • Diamond anvil cell (DAC) interfaced with a YAG laser heating system has been used to study the phase transformations on perovskite structured titanates ($BaTiO_3$, and $PbTiO_3$) and to synthesize the silicate perovskite phase from the orthopyroxenes of $MgSiO_3$ and $(Mg_{0.87},\;Fe_{0.13})SiO_3$. $BaTiO_3$ and $PbTiO_3$ transform from tetragonal phase to cubic at the pressures of approximately 2.6 GPa and 4.0 GPa at room temperature, respectively. Cubic phases of the both show wide range of stability in the extended in-situ high pressures and high temperature regions. Starting orthoenstatite of $MgSiO_3$ has yielded the perovskite phase as the major structure with ilmenite, gamma-spinel, betta-spinel and stishovite phases at ~38 GPa and ${\sim}1,000^{\circ}C$. $(Mg_{0.87},\;Fe_{0.13})SiO_3$ has shown the perovskite as the major phase with betta-spinel, stishovite and enstatite phases at ~35 GPa and ${\sim}1,000^{\circ}C$. The ilmenite phase does not occur at this condition.

  • Mantle xenoliths in alkali basalt from Boun, Gansung area, and Baegryung island in S. Korea are spinel lherzolites composed of olivine, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, and spinel. The xenoliths generally show triple junctions among grams, kink-banding in olivine and pyroxenes, and protogranular and eqigranular textures having m orlentatron of specific direction. Anhedral brown spinels are disseminated in the intergranular spaces of minerals. Mineral compositions are very homogeneous without compositional zonation from rim to core in grains regardless different locahties. Olivine shows Fo. component of 89.0-90.2 and low CaO of 0.03-0.12wt%, orthopyroxene is enstatite with En component of 89.0 - 90.0 and $Al_2O_3$ of 4-5wt%, and clinopyroxene is diopside having En. component of 47.2-49.1 and $Al_2O_3$ of 7.42-7.64wt% from Boun and 4.70-4.91wt% from Baegryung showing local variation. Spinel shows the distinctive negative trend with increasing of A1 and decreasing of Cr, and Mg value and Cr number are 75.1-81.9 and 8.5-12.6, respectively. To estlmate T and P for these mantle xenoliths pyroxene-geothermometers (Wood and Banno, 1973; Wells, 1977; Mercier, 1980; Sachtleben and Seck, 1981; Bertrand and Mercier, 1985; Brey and Kohler, 1990) and Al-solubility geobarometer (Mercier, 1980; Lane and Ganguly, 1980) are used. Temperatures of Mercier (1980) and Sachtleben and Seck (1981) are compatible and equilibrium temperatures of xenoliths, average value of these two, aiie from $970^{\circ}C$ to $1020^{\circ}C$, and equihbrium pressures derived from Mercier (1980) are in the range of 12-19 Kb (42-63 Km). These temperatures and pressures seem to be reasonble wlth the consideration of Al-isopleths in MAS system (Lane and Ganguly, 1980) and Fe effect on Al-solubility in orthopyroxene (Lee and Ganguly, 1988). Equllibrium of temperatures and pressures of xenoliths in P-T space belong to ocenanic geothem among the Mercier's mantle geotherms (1980) and are completely different from continental geotherms of S. Africa (Lesotho) and S. India having different geologcal ages. anera1 compositions of spmel-lherzohtes in S. Korea and eastern China are primitwe and paleogeothems of both are very s~mllar, but degrees of depletion of upper mantle could be locally different from each other since eastern China has various depleted xenoliths due to different degrees of partial melting.
