Donguibogam or DongUiBoGam: Is It Still a Different Book? - A Study on the Translation of Donguibogam into English Orthography -

  • Introduction: Up to now there has been no unified orthography of Donguibogam (東醫寶鑑) in English. Too manydifferent spellings on Donguibogam are seen in the articles on it. Therefore, we present a solution to the spelling problem of Donguibogam in this study. Discussion: To verify the problem of various spellings of Donguibogam we looked at over 54 articles that have spellings of Donguibogam published from 2000 to 2008, and compared those 29 different spellings with each other. To know the historical background of Donguibogam spelling, we looked over many translations that foreigners used, but we could just find fragmentary references to Donguibogam. We compared various spellings with the official orthography of the Korean government. We discussed the appropriateness of various spellings. There is no unified spelling in the DongUiBoGam center and in the conference articles of the Korean Society of Medical History, which recently celebrated the 400th year of DongUiBoGam publication. Conclusion: It is suggested that the proper orthography should be "Donguibogam: Principles and Practice of Eastern Medicine". Hereafter all articles should follow this spelling without exception for more consistent study.

2008년도 일본유학 및 국학사상 연구동향 (Research Trends on Japanese Confucianism and Kokugaku Thought in 2008)

  • 이 글은 2008년에 일본어·한국어·중국어·영어로 발표된 일본의 유학 사상 및 국학사상 관련 논문과 단행본들을 살펴보고 대략적인 연구 동향을 파악한 것이다. 여기에 소개된 약 200여건의 연구 성과들은 일본 에도시대(1603-1868) 사상가와 관련한 연구 성과가 망라되어 있다. 한번 일견함으로써 전 세계에서 에도시대 사상 및 사상가에 대한 연구가 어떻게 이루어지고 있는지 누가 어떠한 연구를 하고 있는지 바로 파악할 수 있을 것이다. 전체적으로 살펴보면, 주자학파, 양명학파, 고학파와 미토학파, 그리고 국학파에 대한 연구는 40건에서 60건 사이로 비교적 골고루 이루어지고 있다. 다만 그 중에서도 국학파에 대한 연구가, 가장 적은 주자학파에 대한 연구보다 16건이 더 많다. 이는 일본사상연구의 주류라고 할 수 있는 일본연구자들이 국학파 연구를 선호하기 때문이다. 일본어로 발표된 연구만 본다면 국학파 연구가 51건이며 주자학파 연구는 29건으로 22건이나 차이가 난다. 한국어로 발표된 연구는 주자학파와 고학파·미토학파가 가장 많은 7건이고, 국학파는 4건이다. 중국어 연구는 양명학파가 가장 많고 그 다음은 고학파와 미토학파이다. 영어권 연구는 각 학파에 골고루 2건 정도로 발표되었다. 언어별로 살펴보면 보면 일본어 연구성과가 153편으로 압도적으로 많고 한국어 연구 성과는 모두 20건인데 중국어 연구는 24건이다. 영어권 연구는 그보다 훨씬 적은 7건이었다. 연구가 가장 많이 이루어진 사상가는 모토오리 노리나가로 총 33건이다. 그 다음이 요시다 쇼인 23건, 오규 소라이 21건이다. 한국어 연구 성과가 많은 사상가는 모토오리 노리나가(4건)와 야마자키 안사이(3건)이다. 중국어 연구성과는 야마가 소코(4건), 요시다 쇼인(4건), 오규 소라이 (3건)이다. 중국어의 경우는 국학파에 대한 연구성과가 가장 적으며, 한국어의 경우는 양명학파에 대한 연구가 가장 적었다.

Journal of Gastric Cancer's Promotion to International Journal from the Perspective of Biliometric Analysis

  • Purpose: The aim was to verify if changing the Journal of Gastric Cancer (JGC) to only English (starting in December 2010) was successful based on bibliometrics. Materials and Methods: The following indicators were retrieved or calculated from the journal homepage and the Web of Science Core Collection on January 30, 2016: the number of citable articles per year; the number of original articles funded; the national origins of the editorial board members and authors; the total citations; the impact factors; the national origins of authors citing the journal; the source titles of articles citing the journal; and the Hirsch index. Results: From 2011 to 2015, the number of citable articles per year was 40, 41, 39, 39, and 40. The proportion of original articles funded was 39 out of 113 articles (34.5%). The editorial board members were from seven countries. The authors were from 11 countries. The total citations increased from 1 in 2011 to 245 in 2015. From 2013 to 2015, the impact factors (without self-citations) were 1.42, 1.36, and 1.60. In 2014, the value 1.60 corresponded to the ranking of 157 out of 210 oncology journals (74.8%); It was cited from 46 countries. Top-ranking countries of citing authors were China (171), Korea (158), and Japan (75). The number of source titles citing the journal was more than 100. The Hirsch index was 12. Conclusions: The English-only language policy, which started in December 2010, was successful in promoting the JGC to international levels from the perspective of bibliometric analysis.

The Applications of On-line English Newspapers into Classroom Instruction

  • The purposes of this paper are to show that learning English via on-line English newspapers is very effective and to suggest several applications of an English newspaper on the web in English education to improve Korean speakers' English proficiency. Firstly, this paper overviews about Newspapers In Education (NIE). Secondly, a comparison between an on-line English newspaper and a traditional one is made, focusing on their advantages and characteristics. Thirdly, some ways to use various articles of a digital English newspaper in classroom instruction are explored. Lastly, the suggestions of this study are integrated into English learning instruction of an extracurricular English learning club of Business English Department. This club includes free utilization of an Internet surfing center, Internet Cafe, in a College Library. And then, a survey among the club members is conducted and its statistical results are analyzed.

대한치과보철학회지에 게재된 논문의 통계적 오류: 국문논문과 영문논문의 비교 (An assessment of statistical errors of articles in the Journal of Korean Academy of Prosthodontics: Comparison between Korean version and English version)

  • 연구목적: 대한치과보철학회지에 사용된 통계적 방법의 통계적 오류현황을 파악하여 통계적 방법의 잘못된 활용으로 인한 치의학 연구논문에서의 문제를 검토하고, 또한 통계적 오류의 유형과 빈도를 파악하여 동일문제의 재발 방지 및 효율적 대처의 기회로 삼고자 함이다. 연구 재료 및 방법: 2000년부터 2006년까지의 대한치과보철학회지에 게재된 총 399편의 논문 중 통계적 방법이 사용된 292편의 논문을 조사했고, 이를 위해 1997년 국제의학학술지 편집위원회의 "생의학 학술지에 투고하는 원고의 통일양식의 통계학적 방법론에 관한 서술지침" 15개항을 기초로 하여 1) 통계 프로그램의 불명시, 2) 통계 방법의 부적절한 기술, 3) 통계용어의 오용 등으로 크게 3가지 범주로 구성된 점검표를 사용하여 통계적 방법의 종류 및 통계적 오류부분을 확인하고 이를 한글판과 영문판으로 비교해 보았다. 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 결과 및 결론: 1. 통계 프로그램 명시 오류는 한글판에선 54%가, 영문판에선 59%가 있었으나 통계적으로 유의한 차이를 보이진 않았다 (P = .66). 2. 통계 방법의 부적절한 기술에 관한 오류는 한글판에선 49%가, 영문판에선 33%가 있었으나 통계적으로 유의한 차이를 보이진 않았다 (P = .09). 3. 통계용어의 오용오류는 한글판에선 54%가, 영문판에선 24%가 있었으며 통계적으로도 유의한 차이가 있었다 (P = .01). 상기 결과로 볼 때 통계용어의 오용 오류 이외엔 통계적 유의성을 보이진 않아서 한글판과 영문판의 통계적 오류의 비율은 유사하게 나타난 걸로 추정되며, 전체적으로 대한치과보철학회지의 통계적 타당성은 다소 부족하게 나타났다. 따라서 향후 치의학 연구자는 통계적 방법을 기술하고 적용할 때 통계적 오류를 피하기 위해 주의를 기울여야 할 것이며, 아울러 치의학 논문에서의 통계학적 방법론에 대한 인식의 제고가 필요하다고 보인다.

무엇이 진실일까?: 영어공용화에 관한 연구 (The truth beneath: Officialization of English in Korea)

  • There have been great controversies over making English as an official language in Korea. They have been triggered since some scholars published books and articles claiming that officialization of English is the best option for Korean people who spend significant amount of their life time to learn English. Those who are happy about the idea believe that officialization of English will be a good help for Korean people to gain a high degree of English proficiency, while others worry about possible negative impact on Korean language and culture. There are more diverse views and opinions on this issue. The distance between pros and cons about officialization of English doesn't seem to be negotiated. This study has been conducted not for finding the solution to the controversies. It is for understanding how those whose successful career and high living quality depend on gaining high command of English feel about acknowledging English as an official language of Korea. The results show that overall ideas on the officialization of English of research subjects are similar with those of scholars in academia. Around two third of total number of the research subjects expressed their criticism against the idea. One interesting thing is that all of the subjects, regardless their positions, think that there are serious problems in English education policy and system in Korea.

An Experiment of Reading Aloud Meeting in English

  • Nowadays, fewer Japanese university students are taking PhD degrees in the U.S.A than Koreans or Taiwanese. The language barrier is considered as one of major reasons for this. This lack of international education is one of the reasons cited, as Japan has been falling behind in industrial globalization. Reading aloud is a good practice for learning a foreign language, since many areas of our brains are simultaneously activated. Furthermore, students have a chance to overcome the psychological barrier in reading aloud in front of others, in a meeting. The authors start the voluntary meeting (which is unrelated to official classes of the curriculum) by reading English articles aloud. Topics in the meeting are selected from articles on web sites, therefore, (1) textbooks were not needed, (2) voice data could be listened to, and (3) the meaning and the pronunciation of an unknown word could be checked by web tools. Once the methodology has been mastered, volunteer students can manage the meeting. The authors introduce our experiments conducted at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Ehime University.

Lexical Bundles in Computer Science Research Articles: A Corpus-Based Study

  • The purpose of this corpus-based study was to find 4-word lexical bundles in computer science research articles. As the demand for research articles (RAs) for international publication increases, the need for acquiring field-specific writing conventions for this academic genre has become a burning issue. Particularly, one area of burgeoning interest in the examination of rhetorical structures and linguistic features of RAs is the use of lexical bundles, the indispensable building blocks that make up an academic discourse. To illustrate, different academic discourses rely on distinctive repertoires of lexical bundles. Because lexical bundles are often acquired as a whole, the recurring multi-word sequences can be retrieved automatically to make written discourse more fluent and natural. Therefore, the proper use of rhetorical devices specific to a particular discipline can be a vital indicator of success within the discourse communities. Hence, to identify linguistic features that make up specific registers, this corpus-based study examines the types and usage frequency of lexical bundles in the discipline of CS, one of the most in-demand fields world over. Given that lexical bundles are empirically-derived formulaic multi-word units, identifying core lexical bundles used in RAs, they may provide insights into the specificity of particular CS text types. This will in turn provide empirical evidence of register specificity and technicality within the academic discourse of computer science. As in the results, pedagogical implications and suggestions for future research are discussed.

  • The purpose of this review is to provide local readers, more specifically, Korean student readers who are not all that familiar with the English language a general overview of research articles that have been published in Asia Pacific Journal of Corpus Research vol. 1, no. 1. A brief summary of each research article focusing on research methods and then followed by an overall review and some insights on research issues will be presented.

  • It is quite burden-some for non-native speakers of English to write and read more and more IT-related reports due to the rapid development of IT technology. Thus, this study aims at designing ESP materials by using huge volume of electronic ITU texts, corpora and concordancer SW. Various tests are designed to study the usage of articles, hyponym, agreement, synonym, and others. The results of this study will bring general and practical benefits to technical English writing and improving IT area students' lexical knowledge of actual English usage. The ESP materials produced by this study will also make an extensive contribution to other industries and academic areas in Korean society.
