The purpose of this study is to help the students in middle school improve their English listening comprehension by presenting effective teaching and learning techniques using animation. A good animation provides a self-contained world with language expressed in a virtual context. A few animation such as "Mulan", "The Emperor's New Clothes", and "Gulliver's Travel" are presented. The materials are primarily for English listening comprehension, enhance awareness of American culture and life-styles, and to encourage students' active role in learning English. It is suggested that their use with content-based instruction, where animation provides relevant schema background, makes language relevant and comprehensible. Practical aspects of classroom instruction are discussed, focusing on the adaption of pre-viewing, while-viewing, and post-viewing activities to the selected animation. It is concluded that careful animation selection, purposeful lesson planning, and the integration of pre-viewing, while-viewing, and post-viewing activities into the content-based lesson encourage natural language skills, especially the listening comprehension and students' interest in English.
As importance of English has been getting more important with globalization, English education for preschoolers has drawn more attention from parents who were born in 1970's and 1980's. Demands for English education are very intense mainly because parent generation has experienced importance of English through own career and they have only one or two children, resulting parents' willingness to invest more on children's education. In order to response high demands for English education, Korean public education system has introduced more intense English education curriculum for younger children and put more weights on English education even for preschoolers. Even though there are numbers of studies to support effectiveness of English education for pre-school age children, adaption of English education for them without through preparation may cause unwanted results on children's learning experience. Hence, it is imperative to develop guideline for English education targeting pre-school age children based on through studies. The purpose of this paper is to justify English education for preschoolers based on various theories for language acquisition, research effectiveness of edutainment animation for English education, and provide basic guideline to develop edutainment animation in the future. To achieve this goal, this study visits how each theory emphasizes importance of language education in preschool age children and analyzes well-known edutainment animation titles by comparing them per characteristics. Furthermore, specifically from participation-inducing animation for education, each component, such as characters, story structure, & story telling methods, has been discussed. Based on the findings from this paper, basic guidelines to develop edutainment animation are developed by suggesting teaching tools for English education for preschoolers.
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of the teaching English factors on student's communicative competence and motivation by using animation at the College. To achieve this purpose, this study presented an effective integrative teaching model to develop students communicative competence. The study created animation based teaching English model by using the animation of Frozen and applied it to lectures. Using animation in the classroom was a creative English teaching technique involving authentic activities like English dram, English guide contest, and various communicative activities A case study on the use of the animation in English classes at was examined and the language teaching syllabus were provided. In order to investigate the motivation and proficiency of learners, the writer chose 79 students who took the lecture. The study discovered the students' motivation and proficiency in English improved significantly. The results of experiment are as follows: First, using animation in the English class was found to have meaningful influence student's intrinsic motivation to learn English. Second, using animation in the English class was found to be effective for developing student's English proficiency. Third, appropriate materials should be selected and applied it to the real classroom activities. In conclusion, one of disadvantages of learning is less communication and the authentic interaction in a real life, so that the integrative teaching methodology which is combined English content and English animation content is also the effective method to improve student's intrinsic motivations in the age of global village.
There has been many studies to explore what is the best multimedia tools for English learning by internet, but the students are still thirsty for the lack of practical and effective learning method which may lead them to stimulate their motivations to learn English with technological new media. The purpose of this study is to design Flash Animation as a new approach to learn language acquisition for those students who are learning English as a second language. This second is to show the validity for the introduction of Flash Animation into the English class. The third is to describe the effectiveness of the application of multimedia tools used in English communication such as java script programming and power point presentation.
This study aims to study mouth shapes suitable to the shapes of Korean consonants and vowels for Korean animations by analyzing the process of English-speaking animation lip-sync based on pre-recording in the United States. A research was conducted to help character animators understand the concept of Korean lip-sync which is done after recording and to introduce minimum, basic mouth shapes required for Korean expressions which can be applied to various characters. In the introduction, this study mentioned the necessity of Korean lip-sync in local animations and introduced the research methods of Korean lip-sync data based on English lip-sync data by laking an American production as an example. In the main subject, this study demonstrated the characteristics and roles of 8 basic mouth shapes required for English pronunciation expressions, left out mouth shapes that are required for English expressions but not for Korean expressions, and in contrast, added mouth shapes required for Korean expressions but not for English expressions. Based on these results, this study made a diagram for the mouth shapes of Korean expressions by laking various examples and made a research on how mouth shapes vary when they are used as consonants, vowels and batchim. In audition, the case study proposed a method to transfer lines to the exposure sheet and a method to arrange mouth shapes according to lip-sync for practical animation production. However, lines from a Korean movie were inevitably used as an example because there has not been any precedents in Korea about animation production with systematic Korean lip-sync data.
With the development of computer technology, the multimedia mediums that allow for animated videos, conversational illustrations are increasingly receiving attention for materials for educational purposes. Accordingly, there is a need to research whether multimedia resources and material is more effective compared to traditional educational material and resources. This study aims to compare traditional English reading and writing learning methods with learning methods using educational multimedia mediums such as illustrations or animation. Students were divided into a experimental group and a control group, and during 6 months the groups were exposed to different educational resources and on the basis of student evaluation feedback and grades, a new approach to English education is offered.
The purpose of the present study is to examine the degree to which the writing instruction using animations has effects on the writing performance of $4^{th}$ year elementary school students. This study also examined the effects of the animation-based writing instruction on the interest and confidence of those students. To this aim, the present study utilized a set of writing tests and questionnaires before and after the instruction. The data were collected from 63 elementary school students. The data were then analyzed using a series of statistical analyses. The results suggested that the students who received the writing instruction using animations performed significantly better on the writing test than those who received the textbook-based instruction. The results also suggested that those who received the animation-based instruction showed more positive interest and confidence on English and English learning. Finally, limitations of the present study and suggestions for further studies are discussed at the end of the paper.
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of English integrated instruction on the 6th grade Korean elementary students' English ability using science animation. Twenty-seven students took English integrated instruction before their regular class for 10 minutes while the other students took review activity instead of it. At first, the students were asked to take the sixth grade diagnostic evaluation sponsored by C office of education in 2018 as the pre-test and ten months later, they were asked to take the first grade diagnostic evaluation of middle school sponsored by C office of education in 2017 as the post-test. Results of the study showed that the English ability and the affective attitude of the students taking English integrated instruction were improved. These results suggest that English integrated instruction can contribute to the improvement of Korean elementary students' English ability.
Integrated multimedia education in English language education shifts instructor-orientated education to be more learner-orientated. The goal of this research is to analyze the effects of multimedia such as software, power point, flash animation and video in English language education. Experimental research with student subjects and multimedia in English education were used for this study and divided into the following categories: instructor-focused analysis, student-focused analysis, and response-based analysis. Teacher-focused analysis is comprised of prediction analysis and backward induction methods. This study aims to analyze whether multimedia tools achieves its intended effects, and to describe what sort of effects are achieved by the tools. While speech animation generation employing deep learning has been actively researched for English, there has been no prior work for Korean. Given the fact, this paper for the very first time employs supervised deep learning to generate Korean speech animation. By doing so, we find out the significant effect of deep learning being able to make speech animation research come down to speech recognition research which is the predominating technique. Also, we study the way to make best use of the effect for Korean speech animation generation. The effect can contribute to efficiently and efficaciously revitalizing the recently inactive Korean speech animation research, by clarifying the top priority research target. This paper performs this process: (i) it chooses blendshape animation technique, (ii) implements the deep-learning model in the master-servant pipeline of the automatic speech recognition (ASR) module and the facial action coding (FAC) module, (iii) makes Korean speech facial motion capture dataset, (iv) prepares two comparison deep learning models (one model adopts the English ASR module, the other model adopts the Korean ASR module, however both models adopt the same basic structure for their FAC modules), and (v) train the FAC modules of both models dependently on their ASR modules. The user study demonstrates that the model which adopts the Korean ASR module and dependently trains its FAC module (getting 4.2/5.0 points) generates decisively much more natural Korean speech animations than the model which adopts the English ASR module and dependently trains its FAC module (getting 2.7/5.0 points). The result confirms the aforementioned effect showing that the quality of the Korean speech animation comes down to the accuracy of Korean ASR.
