영어, 독일어 그리고 한국어의 강화사 (INTENSIFIERS) -머리에 묶이지 않은 용법 (NON-HEAD-BOUND-USE)을 중심으로

  • The main goal of this paper is to investigate and compare English, German and Korean non-head-bound-intensifiers such as English ‘x-self’, German ‘selbst’, and Korean ‘susulo, casin’. That is, this paper is mainly concerned with the semantic domain where the respective contributions of the expressions in question overlap. The phenomenon under discussion with the label “intensifiers” is regarded as universal, which provides the ground of the comparative/contrastive or semi-cross-linguistic study of this paper. Not only the semantic concept of intensification by these expressions but also the combination of grammatical features or syntactic behaviours thereof seem to have highly invariant common denominators among the wide varieties of languages, even if they come from apparently different language families. In comparing English, German and Korean intensifiers, this paper is interested in the more general features of the expressions in question rather than some language-specific idiocyncracies. Intensifiers work similarly not only in English and German, but also in Korean. Each of three languages under investigation provides some sort of a safegard against confusing instances and misleading judgements on the issues under discussion. Morphologically, however, English expressions in question agree with their rele-vant NP in number, gender and person. Whereas German and Korean counterparts do not have such specific morphological properties. Intensifiers in their non-head-bound-use are subject-oriented, just as in their head-bound use. Non-head-bound-intensifiers differ from head-bound-intensifiers mostly in their syntactic behaviours or distributional properties, whereas they share the semantic domain “intensification” regarding relevant subject-NP. 한국대학생들의 특수 목적 관련 교양영어수업에 관한 연구 (The Study on the Effects of English for Specific Purposes for Korean University Students)

  • 본 연구는 한국의 경영 대학 학생들을 대상으로 특수 목적 관련 집중 교양영어 수업을 실시하여 나타난 결과이다. 이 연구는 학생들이 앞으로 학습할 전공 관련 과목들의 영어 습득 능력을 향상시키기 위한 방법으로 특수 목적 관련 집중 교양영어 수업 계획을 진행시켰다. 학생들의 영어 실력 향상도와 학업 성취도를 알아 보기위해 실험 전인 학기 초에 미리 테스트를 실시했고 실험이 끝난 학기 말에 역시 테스트를 실시하여 결과를 비교해보았다. 실험 학기 동안 학생들은 영어 기초 지식 관련 일반 교양영어 수업이 아닌 경영학 전공과 관련된 교재, 학습 활동, 과제 등을 통한 수업을 진행하였다. 연구 결과 특히 성적이 낮은 학생들의 학업 성취 향상도가 두드러졌다. 이는 학생들의 교양 영어 학습목적이 전공 관련 특수 목적 영어 학습이라는 이유 때문에 학생들의 학습동기가 높았다는 것이 주된 이유로 나타났다.

How to Teach English Intonation to Japanese Students

  • The phonetic study of English language in Japan is a matter of great importance, a problem of major concern and a. vital subject The special difficulties which the Japanese college students have in learning English lie in the field of prosodic features of English, such as, syllable, rhythm, stress, intonation, prominence, of.. These difficulties have made Japanese students' pronunciation relatively monotonous or mora(ness). In my presentation, the specific phonetic features of Japanese language first will be discussed and clarified. And then the effective teaching method of intonation to improve Japanese students' pronunciation will be suggested. Finally, the oral dialogue with intonation analysis and transcription in the class room will be demonstrated to highlight the presentation.

A Comparative Study on Intonation between Korean, French and English: a ToBI approach

  • Intonation is very difficult to describe and it is furthermore difficult to compare intonation between different languages because of their differences of intonation systems. This paper aims to compare some intonation phenomena between Korean, French and English. In this paper I will refer to ToBI (the Tone and Break Indices) which is a prosodic transcription model proposed originally by Pierrehumbert (1980) as a description tool. In the first part, I will summarize different ToBI systems, namely, K-ToBI (Korean ToBI), F-ToBI (French ToBI) and ToBI itself (English ToBI) in order to compare the differences of three languages within prosody. In the second part, I will analyze some tokens registered by Korean, French and American in different languages to show the difficulties of learning other languages and to find the prosodic cues to pronounce correctly other languages. The point of comparison in this study is the Accentual Phrase (AP) in Korean and in French and the intermediate phrase (ip) in English, which I will call ' subject phrase ' in this study for convenience.

예비유아교사의 영어 전공수업 경험에 관한 연구 (Study on the Experiences of Preservice Teacher in Early Childhood Education on Learning Content in English)

  • This study explored what Korean college students, especially preservice teacher in early childhood education, experienced and how they constructed the meanings of experiences about their subject- matter course (early childhood mathematics education) taught in English. One cohort- 20 senior students- majoring in early childhood education in a 4-year university was participated in this study. Using action research method and narrative research method, data were analyzed. The findings were as follows: 1) preservice teacher experienced some difficulties to construrct professional knowledge through English. 2) They challenged to overcome these difficulties through active participation. 3) They got supports from instructor and peer group. 4) They accomplished the course with self-satisfaction. 5) They experienced the conflicts between social requirements and personal needs.

Implicit Arguments in English Middles

  • In this study I investigate two implicit arguments in English middles: discharged argument and event argument. I argue that in middle formation external argument is discharged and event argument is suppressed. The proposal can account for the problems with the previous studies (Williams 1981; Keyser and Reoper 1984: Roberts 1987: Fagan 1988, 1992: Chung 2000). When a middle derives from the corresponding transitive verb, the subject argument is discharged, being an implicit argument. Argument discharge is different from argument suppression in the passives and argument deletion in the ergatives. I also argue that event argument is suppressed in middle formation. Event argument suppression is supported by the following: (i) The transitive verbs are always eventive but the corresponding middles are stative, and (ii) the middles are underlyingly eventive, (iii) the middles are “adorned” by certain manner adverbials.

V-to-C Coarticulation Effects in Non-native Speakers of English and Russian: A Locus-equation Analysis

  • Locus equation scatterplots for [bilabial stop + vowel] syllables were obtained from 16 non-native speakers of English and Russian. The results indicated that both Russian speakers of English and English speakers of Russian exhibited modifications towards respective L2 norms in slopes and y-intercepts. All non-native locus equations generated exhibited linearity. Accordingly, the basic results reported in [17] were reverified by securing a larger subject base. More experienced speakers displayed better approximations to L2 norms than less experienced speakers, indicating the necessity of perception- and articulation-related learning for allophonic variations due to adjacent phonetic environments.

The Importance of Learning Language and Culture Integration: Focused on TOEIC Reading Comprehension

  • This study examines the importance of learning language and cultural integration in general English class focused on TOEIC reading comprehension. The understanding of cultural learning and learners' cultural awareness has long been a subject of debate. This study was not only to analyze the improvement of students' interest and reading comprehension ability of TOEIC through cultural learning, but also to ensure students who learn American culture overcome cross-cultural miscommunication and improve their English reading comprehension skills. Pre-post surveys and the pre-post TOEIC tests were used to measure language proficiency and American cultural knowledge to two groups: the experimental and control group. The results from the study were as follows: First, students had better TOEIC scores with improved motivation after understanding American culture relevant to the lessons. Second, reading comprehension skills with regards to TOEIC also improved, compared with the students who were not exposed to American culture due to lack of opportunity.

Evaluation Method of College English Education Effect Based on Improved Decision Tree Algorithm

  • With the rapid development of educational informatization, teaching methods become diversified characteristics, but a large number of information data restrict the evaluation on teaching subject and object in terms of the effect of English education. Therefore, this study adopts the concept of incremental learning and eigenvalue interval algorithm to improve the weighted decision tree, and builds an English education effect evaluation model based on association rules. According to the results, the average accuracy of information classification of the improved decision tree algorithm is 96.18%, the classification error rate can be as low as 0.02%, and the anti-fitting performance is good. The classification error rate between the improved decision tree algorithm and the original decision tree does not exceed 1%. The proposed educational evaluation method can effectively provide early warning of academic situation analysis, and improve the teachers' professional skills in an accelerated manner and perfect the education system.

우리나라 온라인열람목록의 주제접근 방법 (Subject Access to OPACs in Korea)

  • To understand and analyze the variety of the subject access methods of OPACs, telephone interviews were administered to the computerized libraries in Seoul. Data was collected during 4 days in Feb. 1997, and 155 libraries were responded. It was found that 105 libraries are operating OPACs. Among the 105 libraries, almost of all provide classification number and title keyword access, however, only half of them provide subject name access. 18 libraries allow linking/browsing facility between classification number and subject name/keyword. The language of the subject name to oriental books is mainly Korean and that to the Western books is mainly English. LCSH is the major authority list used. 36 libraries, 2/3 of them are special libraries, subject name is assigned by librarian without control. Based on the results, problems and suggestions to enhance subject access capability are presented.
