English Middles as Categorical Sentences

  • Stroik (1992, 1995, 1999) argues for the syntactic approach to English middles. His argumentation is heavily dependent upon the occurrence of a for-phrase in middles. However, many native speakers of English judge middles containing a for-phrase awkward or at best marginal. In addition, some other adverbials show a trait of a very similar nature. These two observational facts seem to justify the Genericity Constraint on Middles (=GCM). Yet a third observational fact that middles in the past tense can be sporadic nullifies GCM. In the present article, based upon several pieces of evidence, I show that the subject of the middle is a topic. In addition, it is argued that the Topical Subject Constraint on Middles can explain away the three observational facts.

A Study of an Independent Evaluation of Prosody and Segmentals: with Reference to the Difference in the Foreign Accent of Korean, Chinese, and Japanese Learners of English (운율 및 분절음의 독립적 발음 평가 연구: 한국인, 중국인, 일본인 영어 학습자의 액센트 차이를 중심으로)

  • This study investigates an independent evaluation of prosody and segmentals with reference to the difference in the foreign accent of Korean, Chinese, and Japanese learners of English. For this study, a set of stimuli were made of English sentences read by male and female Korean, Chinese, and Japanese learners of English by prosody swapping technique. Two groups of American and Korean subjects evaluated the difference in the prosody and segmentals of the stimuli by pairwise difference rating. The results showed that there was no significant difference in the evaluation scores of prosody and segmentals across accents for either subject group. The results also showed that both subject groups indicated a greater score with segmentals than with prosody. The results of the present study are significant in that they are opposite to the claim of some previous studies that prosodic factors could have a greater influence on the foreign accent and intelligibility than segmentals.

The Intensification of Environmental Education Contents in English Subject Education (영어과에서의 환경교육 내용 체계화 및 강화 방안)

  • Environment education, which is a principal solution to environmental problems in the world, is being practiced in Korea through the national curricula for primary and secondary schools. However, it hasn't been effective so far to practice environment education within those schools where a variety of subjects are taught. The purpose of this study is to look for the possibility of practicing environment education and thereby to make some suggestions for effective environment education in the field of English education, which doesn't seem to have a close relationship with environment education. This study first specified prospective contents of environment education by analyzing the Seventh National English Curriculum. Then, on the basis of them, the study explored how to practice environment education in the field of English education. Finally, for effective environment education, it made some suggestions and emphasized the importance of consistent efforts.

Relative Quantifier Scope and Object Shift

  • Aoun and Li (1989) and Hornstein (1995) suggest that the cross-linguistic contrast in quantifier scope between English and East Asian languages is attributed to the parametric difference in the base subject position, viz. VP-internal position in English and Spec IP in East Asian languages. This paper argues that their suggestion is untenable, and that the cross linguistic contrast in question is due to the parametric difference that English permits and East Asian languages do not permit (overt) object shift.

A Study of Theme of English Clause (영어절의 주제에 관한 연구)

  • This paper aims to describe the theme of English clause in terms of systemic grammar. For this I analyze the three subaereas of subject theme and the four subareas of nonsubject theme in the form of features. Each of the seven feature sets of the seven thematic subareas is described in the systemic model. Finally All of the subsystems are described in the framework of the system network in order to show the potential of options of thematic English clause available in a certain situation.

Toward a Unified Constraint-Based Analysis of English Object Extraposition

  • It has been widely accepted that English object extraposition can be easily accounted for. However, recent research exhibits the fact that various cases of English object extraposition lead to many empirical and theoretical problems in generative grammar. To account for such cases, the previous lexical constraint-based analyses including Kim & Sag (2006, 2007) and Kim (2008) attempt to give an explanation on the phenomenon. They, however, seem to be unsuccessful in providing an appropriate analysis of object extraposition, mainly due to the mistaken data generalizations. Unlike the previous analyses, we claim that all verbs selecting CP objects allow object extraposition and propose a unified constraint-based analysis for the various cases of the construction. Further, it is shown that as a consequence, this analysis of object extraposition can be naturally extended to subject extraposition. Hence, this unified analysis enables us to further suggest that all verbs selecting CP allow subject and object extraposition in English.

An analysis of elementary school English education: From students' perspective (초등학교 학생이 바라본 영어교육 실태 분석)

  • English has been taught as a compulsory subject at elementary schools since 1997 starting with third graders, to sixth graders. We have seen active research on teaching methods for elementary English, but little has been done from the learners' perspective. It is very proper time for English educators to review what the elementary students think about their English classes. The purpose of the present study is as following. First, we tried to find out how the students' attitude toward and interest in English have changed over the four-year English education. Second we attempted to suggest the ways to promote the students' interests, and to increase understanding and participation in English classes. We also suggest that curriculum developers need to consider the students' lower interests and understanding in English classes as they move to higher grades, and that classroom teachers need to have a better understanding of what their students do and feel in the English classes.

A Study on Acquisition of English Subjunctive Mood in EFL College Students (대학생의 영어가정법 습득에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to research the process of Korean university students' acquiring the subjunctive mood. To research this, we will propose three subjects of study as below. First, what correlations exist between the general English ability and the English subjunctive mood acquisition? Second what difference is there in English subjunctive mood acquisition to gender? Third, what difference is there in the English subjunctive mood acquisition according to English proficiency? The subject of a sample survey was 36 female and 37 male students, 73 students in total, who take English courses as a required subject at 'C' university in Gwangju. The necessary data for this study was obtained by the questionnaires with 40 questions about the subjunctive mood. The data analyzing method was ANOVA(analysis of variance between groups) through the statistics program SPSS 12.0. When the results of the questions were analysed, there was no significant difference in the English subjunctive mood acquisition according to gender, but according to English proficiency, the English subjunctive mood acquisition was different: advanced-, intermediate- and low group.

Examining Teachers' Beliefs about Teaching English in a Teacher Training Program

  • Teachers' beliefs about teaching English are reflected in their practices in the classroom. They influence on the students' attitude to English learning. Any teacher training program expects the trainees to change or modify their existing beliefs and attitude through the new ideas and information introduced by the program toward a desired direction. The present study describes a teacher training program for elementary school English teachers and compares the beliefs of the teachers about teaching English before and after the training. The subjects are the elementary school English teachers around Chungnam area who get a special training of 120 hours during January 1997. The investigation of the subjects' beliefs on English teaching is conducted through examining two journals of each subject before and after the training. The journals show the teachers' inner flow of thought, so teacher trainers are expected to get insight on their general instructional considerations and have implications on the future teacher training program through examining these journals. In addition, the journal writing itself gives the teachers opportunity to reflect their practice and rethink about their beliefs, and develop themselves as professional English teachers.

Resources for assigning MeSH IDs to Japanese medical terms

  • Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), a medical thesaurus created by the National Library of Medicine (NLM), is a useful resource for natural language processing (NLP). In this article, the current status of the Japanese version of Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) is reviewed. Online investigation found that Japanese-English dictionaries, which assign MeSH information to applicable terms, but use them for NLP, were found to be difficult to access, due to license restrictions. Here, we investigate an open-source Japanese-English glossary as an alternative method for assigning MeSH IDs to Japanese terms, to obtain preliminary data for NLP proof-of-concept.
