영한 병렬 코퍼스에 나타난 영어 수동문의 한국어 번역 (Translating English By-Phrase Passives into Korean: A Parallel Corpus Analysis)

  • This paper is motivated by Watanabe's (2001) observation that English byphrase passives are sometimes translated into Japanese object topicalization constructions. That is, the original English sentence in the passive may be translated into the active voice with the logical object topicalized. A number of scholars, including Chomsky (1981) and Baker (1992), have remarked that languages have various ways to avoid focusing on the logical subject. The aim of the present study is to examine the translation equivalents of the English by-phrase passives in an English-Korean parallel corpus compiled by the author. A small sample of articles from Newsweek magazine and its published Korean translation reveals that there are indeed many ways to translate English by-phrase passives, including object topicalization (12.5%). Among the 64 translated sentences analyzed and classified, 12 (18.8%) examples were problematic in terms of agent defocusing, which is the primary function of passives. Of these 12 instances, five cases were identified where an alternative translation would be more suitable. The results suggest that the functional characteristics of English by-phrase passives should be highlighted in translator training as well as language teaching.

Considerations Regarding the Application of IMO Maritime English Model Course 3.17 in Korean Contexts

  • The importance of clear and effective communication at sea has been greatly emphasized due to the increase in multiculturalism on board both ocean-going and coastal vessels, and the necessity of systematic English training based on 'Knowledge, Understanding, and Proficiency' specified in STCW has also been recognized. With these growing needs in mind, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) updated the Maritime English (ME) Model Course 3.17 in 2015 by providing guidelines on language education within two separate categories, General Maritime English (GME) and Specialized Maritime English (SME). The IMO is now attempting to create a new, global framework of ME education and training, and this this new course model must first be thoroughly understood in order to explore the ways to apply the modified version into the context of current ME education in Korea and to design an updated language curriculum. Therefore, the general structural features of the new model course will be explained in this paper, and the course focus set by IMO and to be considered and/or adopted by the Republic of Korea will be closely examined. Finally, suggestions will be made on how to implement this revised model course in practice with the following focus: the development of localized curriculum for GME and SME; the provision of practical teaching guidance through relevant online and offline materials for class and self-study; and the establishment of qualification guidelines and a teaching support system for language teachers in maritime and language education.

  • The purpose of this paper is to suggest the development of the Guidelines on VTS English language competency test, according to IALA Guideline 1132 - VTS Voice Communications and Phraseology. As the foundation for improving VTSOs' communication capabilities throughout their career lifecycle in terms of training, accreditation, and revalidation, a development of a VTS-specific language testing system with explicit language testing evaluation criteria becomes more critical. With the aim of facilitating the discussion, a range of suggestions to be considered in the development of Guidelines on the VTS English competency test are made

  • As the role and status of English as an international language(EIL) have been widely discussed, studies need to be done to find out new issues and concerns related to teaching EIL In Korea. This presentation will review the changes in teaching English in Korea, teaching pronunciation, in particular, focusing on its goal and major instructional approaches. Suggestions will be made on developing a learner-centered communicative model for teaching English pronunciation and on training both Korean and foreign teachers of English to teach English pronunciation.

국제 스포츠 행사를 위한 영어교육 방안 (English Education for International Sports Events)

  • 본 연구는 (1) 2018 평창 동계 올림픽 영어 교육 준비 실태를 파악하고 (2) 영어 교육 활성화를 위한 영어 교육 프로그램에 대한 요구를 파악하여, 국제 스포츠행사를 위한 효과적인 영어교육 방안을 모색하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 이를 위하여 국제스포츠 행사 교육 관리 관계자와 전화 인터뷰를 하거나 자료를 제공받았고 그 결과, 조직위에서는 2018 평창동계올림픽대회 관계자 영어 교육 프로그램을 진행 중이며, 강릉시에서는 글로벌리더나 통역봉사단 등을 대상으로 하는 교육과 일반 시민을 대상으로 하는 교육으로 나누어 언어 교육을 진행하고 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 또한 강릉시 글로벌리더 양성과정에 참여하고 있는 학습자들과 최근 국제 스포츠 행사에 자원봉사자로 참여한 26명을 대상으로 국제 스포츠 행사 영어 교육을 위한 설문을 한 결과, 국제 스포츠 행사와 관련된 내용을 가르치는 영어교육 수업이나 이에 가장 적합한 수업 방법에 대한 요구가 크다는 것을 알 수 있었다, 따라서 본 연구에서는 영어 잘하는 사람들을 최대한 잘 활용하기 위해 DB구축을 체계적으로 잘하고, 이들이 선발된 이후에는 단기간 동안 본인이 맡은 봉사 직무에 바로 활용할 수 있는 영어교육을 제공받을 수 있도록 해야 할 것이며, 이를 위해서는 이에 적합한 교수법과 교수 내용을 개발할 필요가 있다고 제언한다.

A FACETS Analysis of Rater Characteristics and Rater Bias in Measuring L2 Writing Performance

  • The present study used multi-faceted Rasch measurement to explore the characteristics and bias patterns of non-native raters when they scored L2 writing tasks. Three raters scored 254 writing tasks written by Korean university students on two topics adapted from the TOEFL Test of Written English (TWE). The written products were assessed using a five-category rating scale (Content, Organization, Language in Use, Grammar, and Mechanics). The raters only showed a difference in severity with regard to rating categories but not in task types. Overall, the raters scored Grammar most harshly and Organization most leniently. The results also indicated several bias patterns of ratings with regard to the rating categories and task types. In rater-task bias interactions, each rater showed recurring bias patterns in their rating between two writing tasks. Analysis of rater-category bias interaction showed that the three raters revealed biased patterns across all the rating categories though they were relatively consistent in their rating. The study has implications for the importance of rater training and task selection in L2 writing assessment.

임상 치과위생사의 치과의료 서비스 과정에서 영어 의사소통 능력 관련 요인 (Factors related to English communication skills in the dental health service process of clinical dental hygienists)

  • Objectives: This study analyzes factors related to English communication skills in the dental health services of clinical dental hygienists who provide dental medical services to foreigners. Methods: Surveys were conducted to measure students' English communication skills. Participants comprised 195 clinical dental hygienists working at dental English study cafes or who provided dental medical services to foreigners. After analyzing the differences in English communication skills, hierarchical multiple regression analysis was performed on the factors related to English communication skills. Results: English communication skill of dental hygienists was 1.96 points out of 5 points. The factors related to the English communication skill of the clinical dental hygienists were foreign patient care, language training experience, overseas living experience, and certified English proficiency. The adjusted explanatory power of this model was 53.0%. Conclusions: Dental hygienists in charge of foreign patients have experience in language training and overseas residence, have a language qualification certificate, and have higher English communication skills. It is necessary to develop English language learning programs based on metaverse to develop the English communication skills of dental hygienists who provide dental health services to foreign patients and to operate a creative educational environment to increase interest in learning English.

Suggestions for Developing On-Line In-Service English Teacher Training Program

  • The development of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) has changed the manner in which English teachers are taught as instructors, as well as English language learners. Online-related technology, a product of development of ICT technology, is used for various purposes such as training teachers and enhancing professionalism of current teachers to practice more efficient training. The purpose of this study is to extract common domains and sub-domains related to development of cyber-type in-service training (INSET) through domestic and international case analyses and to develop content areas of INSET using cyberspace or efficient online INSET programs. To accomplish the purpose of this study, domestic and foreign cases were analyzed in relation to direction of development of online English teacher training programs.

해외어학연수의 외국어 정확성 향상에 대한 효과 (The Effect of Overseas Language Training on the Development of Foreign Language Accuracy)

  • 본 연구는 해외어학연수의 외국어 정확성 향상에 대한 효과를 조명하기 위해 한 학기 동안 해외대학에서 어학연수를 받은 27명의 한국 대학생들이 한 학기의 시간차를 두고 작성한 두 영작문 간의 차이와 오류들을 조사하고, 그러한 차이가 통계적으로 유의미한지를 검정하여 외국어 정확도 면에서의 변화를 분석하였다. 어학연수 이후에 영작문의 길이와 문장의 길이가 증가하였으나 전체 문장수는 감소하였다. 학생들은 더 많은 수의 단어를 더 복잡한 구조의 문장에서 사용하여 오류의 수도 증가하였다. 이를 볼 때, 어학연수 이후 학생들의 문장 생성능력이 향상되고 복잡한 형태의 문장들을 쓰려고 시도한 것을 알 수 있다. 본 연구의 결과는 한 학기 동안 해외어학연수를 받은 이후 대체로 학생들의 문장생성능력은 다소 증진하였지만, 문법적 요소들을 문장 속에서 정확하게 사용하는 문법적 정확성은 크게 향상하지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 이는 비록 해외 어학연수가 집중적으로 목표언어만 학습하여 언어입력을 확대할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 목표언어에 자연스럽게 노출될 수 있는 환경적 이점을 제공하긴 하지만, 한 학기라는 기간 안에 문법적으로 정확한 문장을 생성해내는 문법능력을 향상시키는 데는 크게 효과적이지 않았다는 것을 시사한다.

영시 번역의 문제점에 관한 소고 (Some opinions on the problems of english poetry translation)

  • With the trend of globalization more people are absorbing in the English learning programs. Not a few attend even the English-Korean translation training course to be semi-professional translators, but we English teachers have already experienced that it is not so easy to translate any language into another, and that it is far more difficult to translate poetry. Much time has been devoted to investigating the problems of translating poetry than any other mode. Poetry translation theory is concerned with the problem of faithfulness to the original poetry. To be a good translator we must fully understand the sound and sense of the original work. But when in translating English poetry into Korean we feel keenly our limits of understanding the sound and style of English poetry, and of expressing them into Korean. Even our sense-oriented translation is far from satisfactory. We often make quite a few mistranslation. Another immediate problem is that of alternation between word-for-word translation and free translation method, but first of all, we should have a perfect knowledge and understanding in English, and a good command of our mother tongue. We should also have a sound interpretation ability because poetry translation is based on the interpretation of the original, and on the shaping of that interpretation. Some doubts have been raised over the feasibility of poetry translation. They say it is not possible to combine in another language the emotion, the form, the style, the musical devices of English poetry. Yet the art of translation has been practiced everywhere in the world. Through this art we can share our experience and culture with foreigners and theirs with us.
