The current study was designed to explore whether taking English pronunciation classes could improve the realization of English rhythm by Korean learners of English. Specifically, this study used various rhythm metrics to examine the extent to which the learners' speech became rhythmically similar to the target language after taking classes that focused on English pronunciation. Sixteen learners who took a 15-week English pronunciation course at a university read an English passage twice (at the beginning and the end of the semester). The rhythm metrics such as Deltas, Varcos, and Pairwise Variability Indices were calculated for the learners' speech, as well as that of 8 native speakers of English. The results demonstrated that the learners' speech was slower, and they put more frequent within-sentence pauses than the native speakers even after the classes. The analyses also indicated that the speech recorded at the beginning of the semester was rhythmically much more different from the target language than at the end of the semester. After the classes, however, the learners' consonantal intervals became much more target-like, while the vocalic intervals were rhythmically even further from those in the target language. Overall, the findings suggested that the pronunciation classes helped the learners to produce English speech that was rhythmically similar to the native speakers.

There has been a study about the effective multimedia education using a computer following the appearance of a virtual space. Also, there has been an effort to connect the information & communication technology with education. The popular on-line lecture systems are mostly on English lecture sites. However, they just offer the VOD(Video On Demand) services ignoring students' convenience. To improve these week points, we design and implement the multimedia leaching system focusing on an efficient repeat-effect in order that students can control the Media Player by clicking a sentence on a web page. This paper presents the Editor and Player considering students' interest and the effective learning fruits. So users can easily make multimedia materials and use them to improve their English listening skill.

How to teach intelligible, communicative pronunciation is a continuous question in the English education. Without good input, we can not expect good output. However, in EFL situation, it is very difficult to input the good English pronunciation, therefore, we have to find out the efficient and effective material for teaching pronunciation. One of the materials is song, because songs contain the linguistic and cultural traits of the language. The purpose of this paper is to clarify the reason why songs are good for teaching pronunciation. Koreans, who are syllable timed language users, have difficulties in English pronunciation of stress, rhythm, consonants cluster, linking or blending in connected speech. The 134 songs from wee sing are analyzed for how these traits show in songs. The result shows that we can acquire the traits easily and naturally through songs. And a lesson plan is offered as an example for teaching songs.

The result of the English test for freshmen showed wide difference in the ability of students, which means the graded class is strongly required. This paper describes the case study about the graded English class that was carried out for the freshman. Every freshman must take an English placement test from problems bank and were classified according to the result of the test. In order to resolve the dissatisfaction of the high level students, the statutes of my university for credit were modified. In order to analyze the effect of the graded class, evaluation test using similar problems was carried out at the end of the semester. The effect of the graded class was analyzed by using the paired samples t-test method and there was a meaningful performance improvement at the average score. Additional improvements in the method of classification and credit granted were made by analyzing the results of the evaluation test and survey.

This study is to examine grammar understanding with beginner English speakers according to presentational methods of grammatical content. 18 English-speaking Korean beginners were randomly assigned and divided into two groups. We first examined if there was a statistically significant difference between the two groups in grammar comprehension with and without illustrations. It was found that the group given the presentation illustrations showed greater understanding than the group without them. Second, no statistically significant difference in grammar understanding was found between the groups with and without materials marked for their awareness. Third, no statistically significant difference was found between the groups with the order of presenting content elements related to grammatical items. This study is to affirm the importance of illustrations as a component of Korean textbooks.

How can an automated essay scoring (AES) program, which provides feedback for essays, be a formative tool for improving ESL writing? In spite of the increasing demands for English writing proficiency, English writing instruction has not been effective for teaching and learning because of a lack of timely and accurate feedback. In this context, AES as a possible solution has been gaining the attention of educators and scholars in ESL/EFL writing education because it can provide consistent and prompt feedback for student writers. This experimental study examined the impact of different types of feedback for a college ESL writing program using the Criterion AES system. The results reveal the positive impact of AES in a college-level ESL course and differences between the teacher's feedback and the AES feedback. The findings suggest that AES can be effectively integrated into ESL writing instruction as a formative assessment tool.

최근 유무선 인터넷 콘텐츠 처리 기술의 발달과 고속 인터넷 망의 보급으로 인해, 사용자는 언제 어디서나 컴퓨터를 이용하여 교육받고 학습할 수 있게 되었다. 유무선 인터넷을 활용한 영어 교육은 교수 및 학습자에게 다양한 통신 수단을 제공하는 동시에 영어를 모국어로 쓰는 사람들과 의사소통이 손쉽게 이루어지게 해줄 것이다. 또한 멀티미디어를 활용한 영어 학습은 학습자의 흥미를 유발하고 의사소통 능력의 신장을 유도할 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 멀티미디어 영어 학습에서 개별 학습자의 수준에 부합하는 학습을 제공하기 위해 평가를 통해 학습자의 지식 정도를 진단한다. 평가는 평가문항의 유형과 의사소통기능을 기반으로 구성되어 학습자에게 제시된다. 또한 기존의 웹 기반의 PC 뿐만 아니라 다양한 통신환경과 단말기를 지원하는 인터페이스 모듈을 통하여 이미지와 오디오와 같은 멀티미디어 학습 콘텐츠를 제공해주는 지능형 교육 시스템을 설계하고 구현한다. 제안하는 시스템을 교육현장에 적용해 본 결과, 학습자 수준을 진단하고 분석하기 위한 문항 정보와 추론엔진에 대한 성능을 분석하였고, 학습내용 제시 방법 또한 영어 학습에 있어서 수준 향상을 가져올 수 있다는 결론을 얻을 수 있었다. 따라서, 제안하는 시스템을 교육 현장에 도입한다면 다양한 단말기를 통해서 언제 어디서나 효과적인 영어 학습을 할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

이 연구는 융합기반의 모바일영어커리큘럼을 실용에 앞서 그 가치를 입증하는 데 목적을 두고 있다. 본 연구는 모바일에 탑재되어있는 영어프로그램을 활용하여 효과적인 영어 학습이 될 수 있도록 커리큘럼을 개발하고 연구한다는 점에서 기존의 연구와 차이가 있다. 이 커리큘럼에 대한 교사의 이해와 인지 정도를 알아보기 위해 질적 연구를 수행했으며, 그 결과 영어교사들의 피드백은 실제 사용하는 영어 학습, 반복효과, 협동 학습, 자기효능감 경험 등의 대부분 긍정적 평가를 받았다. 부정적인 견해로는 전통적인 영어 학습 틀에서 벗어난 학습 환경으로 인해 학습에 임하는 '학습자들의 자세가 가벼울 수 있지 않을까?' 하는 염려가 있었다. 이 문제는 교사와 학습자 간에 온 오프라인을 통한 긴밀한 의사소통으로 해결될 수 있다. 향후 연구에서는 이 커리큘럼을 학습현장에서 활용하고 분석하는 연구가 진행되기를 기대한다.

The purpose of the study is to investigate whether focus-on-form instruction is effective in promoting accuracy in writing and to make some suggestions regarding education in business English writing. For this purpose, an experiment, of which the participants were 29 college sophomores taking a course in business English, was made. The learners received instruction in the English nouns followed by modificatory phrases or clauses through the focus-on-form techniques, feedback and explicit explanation. The results were as follows: First, the learners who received focus-on-form instruction improved accuracy in writing. Second, there was a correlation between the learners' English proficiency levels and the effects of focus-on-form instruction. Third, the high level learners showed more positive attitude toward focus-on-form instruction than the low level ones. To promote accuracy in written business communication, the following suggestions were made on the basis of the results: First, focus-on-form instruction should be incorporated into a content-based business English class. Second, repeated focus-on-form instruction is needed. Third, learners' English proficiency levels should be taken into account when focus-on-form instruction is given.

The purpose of the current study is to investigate the realization of speech rhythm in English as spoken by Korean learners of English. The study particularly aims to examine the rhythm metrics of English read speech by learners who speak Busan or the South Kyungsang dialect of Korean. Twenty-four learners whose L1 is Busan Korean and eight native speakers of English read a passage wherein five sentences were segmented and labeled as vocalic and intervocalic intervals. Various rhythm metrics such as %V, Varcos, and Pairwise Variability Indexes (PVIs) were calculated. The results show that Korean learners read English sentences with significantly more vocalic and consonantal intervals at a slower speech rate than native English speakers. The analyses of rhythm metrics revealed that when the speech rate was not normalized, Korean learners' English showed more variability in the length of consonantal and vocalic intervals. However, speech-rate-normalized rhythm metrics for vocalic intervals indicated that Korean learners transferred their L1 rhythmic structures (a syllable-timed language) into their L2 speech (a stress-timed language). Overall, the results suggest that Korean learners' English reflects the rhythmic characteristics of their L1. The effect of the learners' L1 dialect on the realization of L2 speech rhythm is also speculated.
