  • This paper presents a study of heat dissipation away from the fuel combustion of a marine diesel engine. These engines are operated for long periods under high load conditions: so cooling systems are necessary for radiation and control of the high temperature levels. In the study, each component of the water cooling system was developed to achieve improvements in cooling and safety. Heat transfer considerations and arrangement design for the components were important and an intercooler and exhaust manifold incorporated. An optimization of the cooling water's flow path was achieved subject to the need for convenient maintenance. The 750Ps marine diesel engine was used for performance testing of the cooling system. The test results showed adequate cooling performance improvement.

  • The determination of thrust is very important in hypersonic air-breathing propulsion design and evaluation. Because of the short flow-residence time in the combustor, the evaluation of engine performance is strongly influenced upon the engine thrust. Conventional methods to determine the thrust is using thrust stand or force measurement system. However, these methods cannot be applied to the case where thrust stands are impractical, such as free jet testing of engines, and model combustor. With this reason, the thrust determination method from measured pilot pressure is considered and evaluated.

  • Noise and vibration performance plays an important role in the development of rotating components, such as engines, drivelines, transmission systems, compressors and pumps. The presence of torsional vibrations and other specific phenomena require the dynamic behaviour of systems and components to be designed accurately in order to avoid comfort and durability related problems. This paper provides an overview of the instrumentation and challenges related to torsional vibration testing. The accuracy and performance of five measurement techniques (high-speed incremental encoder, dual beam laser interferometer, zebra tape, zebra disc, direct pulse measurements with magnetic probe) is investigated by measurements on a Fiat Punto 1.4 liter engine. The potential sources of error are discussed to explain the inaccuracies of each technique.

  • This research aims to develop parts for advanced fuel/oil filtering re-circulation applicable to this kind of regulation proof engines. These parts can playa role of converting traditional air emission type crankcase into recovery type crankcase so that the engine can deal with environmental regulations, which do not allow minimal amount of toxic gas discharge. For the experiment, test method and specially made testing equipment are prepared. The results showed that oil separation efficiency of the cone type CCV(Crank Case Ventilation) system was higher than one of cylinder type both in bench test and in engine.

  • For the wear protection of cylinder bore in aluminum cast material the internal plasma spraying technology offers a new economical solution. The size and the weight of the engine blocks significantly can be decreased in comparison with the traditional cast iron sleeves. The coefficient of friction between piston ring and cylinder wall sensitively can be reduced and the wear resistance increased from several factors. The paper gives an overview of the technology from the AlSi cast alloys for engine block to the non destructive testing technology used after the machining by diamond honing. The actual results in engines of different types also will be shown. The economical advantages of the plasma spraying (or the internal coating in cylinder bore also will be discussed in comparison with the different alternatives of technology. The aspect of the market introduction also will be discussed in this paper.

  • The study examined information retrieval tools as predictors for information resources utilization, four research questions, and four hypotheses were made to guide the study. A descriptive survey was adopted for the study. Random sampling technique was used to select sample of 393 from a population of 557 academic staff registered in the University of Port Harcourt library. The questionnaire was adopted as a data collection instrument titled Information retrieval as predictors for information resources utilization (IRPIRUQ). Data were analyzed using both simple and multiple regression while analysis of variance (ANOVA) associate with regression was used for testing the hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level. The study revealed that information resources are under utilized as the OPAC and Online Databases are not easily accessed. Further findings showed that the academic staff made use of internet search engines more often than the OPAC and online databases. It was recommended among others that a new library software be installed in place of KOHA for wider connectivity and adequate distribution of software that will aid usage of the online databases and OPAC.

  • Aluminium titanate (Al$_2$TiO$_{5}$) as structural ceramics is known as a low thermal exansion, a low thermal conductivity, a low Young's modulus, and excellent thermal shock resistant material. These properities allow for the testing as an insulating material in engines for portliner, piston bottom an turbo charger. However, those composites has low mechanical strength due to the presence of microcracks developed by the large difference in thermal expansion coefficients along crystallographic directions exceed the internal strength of material and its tendency to decompose into $Al_2$O$_3$ and TiO$_2$ at temperature below 130$0^{\circ}C$ limit however the application of aluminium titanate.e.

  • It is very difficult to express the state of a tested engine objectively concerning the malfunction, failure and wear of an engine. The general method of engine evaluation is to express evaluator's opinion for the engine state after testing. However, these methods is only subjective evaluation because test engineers, designers, and evaluators does not easily coincide in opinion. Therefore, in this article, the method of engine rating are introduced in order to represent the qualitative trends into quantitative value. The purpose of Engine Rating is to assign a quantified value to the tribology state of a tested engines. Originally, this Engine Rating method have been used to evaluate the performance of engine oil quantitavely. Using this method, we can predict the proper interval of engine oil change due to its objectivity. So, we can prevent the frequent change of engine oil and protect the environmental contamination. Furthermore, this method can be used to tell the general state of a tested engine after finishing engine durability tests. A single merit scale is used to evaluate numerically the state of cleanliness and the mechanical condition. Generally, a part which is absolutely clean or shows no wear, is rated merit 10. A part which is absolutely dirty or very worn, is rated merit 0.

  • A 150 m$^{3}$/hr, 30 kg/cm$^{2}$, air-cooled 3-stage reciprocating air compressor is designed to be used in starting large diesel engines. A basic design procedure is presented to meet the targeted pressure and flow rate, and especially the volumetric efficiency. Temperature and stress analyses of the cylinder are performed using FEM modelings. The dynamics of valve system is analyzed and stress at the valve seat due to valve impact is evaluated. To reduce friction loss and wear at the compressor engine system, tribological design practices are suggested. Fin-type coolers are designed to dissipate generated compression heat at each stage. Finally, a prototype is manufactured and performance test is carried out utilizing an air tank. Performance results are compared to the design targets, other foreign specifications, and some quality standards.

  • It is well known that helium saturated propellants significantly effects the dynamics of propulsion system, thruster cross coupling, water hammer and thruster performance. Especially for the propulsion systems, which have multiple high thrust engines, such as HTV(H-II transfer vehicle), the effect is more important. Therefore full-saturated propellants should be used at ground tests of HTV propulsion system and evaluate its effects. HTV is an advanced space vehicle being developed by Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency(JAXA) to enhance cargo delivery capabilities of the fleet of vehicles visiting the International Space Station(ISS). This paper presents an overview of the successful effort of the testing with saturated propellants(MMH/MON3) for HTV propulsion system during the ground firing tests.
