  • The vertical take-off and vertical landing (VTVL) function is essential to carry out exploration missions on the moon or Mars. For this, the engine of the exploration vehicle must have appropriate thrust control accuracy and response time. The hybrid rocket engine (HRE) is known to have a high level of thrust control capability that can satisfy these conditions. This study aims to first verify whether the thrust control performance of the developed HRE is suitable for VTVL. To this end, an oxidizer supply system that does not use a pressurization device was adopted, aiming for a mission time of about 10 seconds. In this study, the thrust control characteristics appearing under various supply pressure decreasing conditions were identified through experiments. Appropriate tank and charging conditions were set from the experimental results. In addition, the results of previous studies and current study's test were compared to confirm whether the developed HRE had adequate control performance for VTVL, and finally, the thrust control performance was verified through altitude control simulation.

  • The purpose of this study is to design the free forging tool for the high accuracy of the thrust shaft in marine engine. In order to do it, the principal factor controlling the uprightness of the flange part and the excessive margin and folding in middle part of thrust shaft after forging process was identified using FEA. Based on the results, the optimum shape of free forging tool and working method were proposed and verified through the mock-up and the actual product test.

  • For liquid rocket engine test, one of most important design parameters to be measured is thrust. However, not like solid rocket motor, a liquid rocket engine is attached to the propellant feed system, control valve and many other safety systems. Without considering these effects, thrust data measured from firing test is not reliable and sometimes almost meaningless. In this research, new thrust measurement system, which includes all these side effects, was designed and fabricated.

  • This paper summarizes the activities performed for the development of a BLDC(Brushless Direct Current) motor driven cryogenic thrust control valve with application to KSLV-II rocket engine. The developed thrust control valve can modulate the flow rate of liquid oxygen under cryogenic temperature of 90K and high pressure of 113.2 bar with the help of electro-mechanical actuator driven by a BLDC motor. This valve can be applied to an engine combustion test after minor change because all development certification test have been performed successfully.

  • An Altitude Engine Test Facility(AETF) was built at the Korea Aerospace Research Institute in October 1999 and has been being operated for altitude testing of gas turbine engines of 3,000 Ibf class or less. The AETF has been calibrated using several engines such as J69 of Teledyne Co. as a facility checkout engine. Uncertainty analyses on the air flow rate and thrust were performed using the test results, according to ASME PTC 19.1-1998. Several modifications on the facility and test method were made in order to improve the measurement uncertainty to a satisfactory level over the whole operating envelop. Spatial distributions of pressure and temperature were measured, sensors were substituted by more accurate ones, inlet duct was modified to refine the flow quality, and pressure control logic was revised to remove the cell pressure fluctuation. As a result, the uncertainty of the air flow measurement was improved by 0.1% over all the test conditions, and the net thrust measurement by up to 3%. The improved measurement uncertainties of air flow and thrust are 0.68~O.73% and 0.4~1.3%, respectively.

  • The KSLV-II(Korea Space Launch Vehicle-II) which being a successor of the KSLV-I is a space launch vehicle capable of delivering 1.5 ton-class satellite into a low earth orbit. The development of a 75 tonf-class liquid rocket engine(LRE) is planned on the basis of the technologies mastered through the preceded research of a 30 tonf-class LRE. The thrust chamber of the LRE is required to have higher combustion stability, structural integrity and thermal durability. This paper deals with the design requirements of the 75-tonf thrust chamber and a variety of technical considerations which have been conducted analytically in the course of the design for the realization of the requirements.

  • An effective control of the axial thrust of a turbopump is one of the critical issues for obtaining its operational stability. Axial thrusts of the fuel pump for the 75-ton class rocket engine under development were measured with water as a test propellant at a room temperature. According to the test results, the axial thrust of the fuel pump seemed to satisfy the axial force condition of its bearing. Also, the thrust was increased as a whole when the flowrate of the pump was decreased. Furthermore it was found that the thrust and the leakage flowate were modified when the gaps between the floating ring seals and the impeller were changed.

  • In this paper, the mathematical models and control algorithm of a thrust control valve were described as a precedent study on the design of thrust control algorithm for a liquid rocket engine (LRE). Numerical simulations were performed using a simplified simulation system of an LRE and the developed mathematical models were validated by comparison with the experimental results. Through these research, basic data were acquired for the development of a thrust control algorithm for a LRE.

  • A fundamental study on a gas injection variable thrust method for thrust throttling in a liquid rocket engine was conducted. The gas injection variable thrust has the advantage of not only being able to control the thrust with a simple structure but it also increases the atomization performance through the injection pressure drop that increases in direct proportion to the density reduction. In this study, spray characteristics such as spray instability, spray pattern, spray angle, and breakup length based on changes in the liquid mass flow rate and amount of injected gas were investigated using effervescent swirl injectors.

  • Parametric cycle analysis of a dual-spool, mixed exhaust turbofan engine with turbine blade cooling were described to investigate the effect of turbine blade cooling on the engine performance such as specific thrust and thrust specific fuel consumption. Coolant of low pressure turbine triggers high engine performance loss and cooling effect loss in high pressure turbine. Therefore low pressure turbine coolant should be much more considered for effective design.
