To remove nitrogen oxides(NOx) in exhaust gas of diesel engine three-way catalytic process with plasma discharger has great possibilities. Characteristics of NOx removal depends on NO conver-sion to $NO_2$ and /or $HNO_3$ due to high activation energies for NO oxidation and reduction, NOx removal efficiency by using three-way catalytic with plasma discharger indicated about 50% at 40watt power consumption condition.
This paper presents unsteady oil flow behaviors in the engine lubrication network to clarify the differences between continuous and discontinuous oil supply crankshaft system. Using commercial network analysis program, Flowmaster2, engine lubrication network system analysis were carried out. And effects of crankshaft speed and supplied oil pressure on pressure fluctuation in oil groove and oil flow rate to each bearing were analyzed.

The control technique for an electronic engine is studied. For this study an IBM-PC and a throttle body fuel injection system are selected. The computer controls fuel injection, spark timing, exhaust gas recirculation and idle speed. Fuel injection is adjusted either by a feed back signal of a zirconia $O_{2}$ sensor or programmed logic for starting, deceleration, warm ing up and idle modes. When a 3-way catalytic converter is used with the electronic engine control system, CO, THC, and NOx were reduced more than 90% simultaneously.

This paper deals with the theoretical prediction and cyclic variation of combustion characteristics in a four stroke, single0cylinder, diesel engine. Theoretical calculations employed a simple empirical model of analysis of energy equation for the thermodynamic system of engine cylinder. The cyclic variation of combustion characteristics is investigated, in term of frequency distribution and standard deviation of peak characteristics, as obtained by combustion analyzer system. The results of theoretical prediction are shown to be in close agreement with the experimental data. The effect of fuel injection timing, engine speed, cooling water temperature, and the compression ratio on the cyclic variations of combustion characteristics were discussed.
Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) shows great potential for low $NO_x$ emission but is hampered by the problem of no direct method to control the combustion process. Therefore, HCCI combustion becomes unstable easily, especially at lower and higher engine load. This paper presents a method to achieve diesel-fueled HCCI combustion, which involves directly injecting diesel fuel into the cylinder before the piston arrives at top dead center in the exhaust stroke and adjusting the valve overlap duration to trap more high temperature residual gas in the cylinder. The combustion stability of diesel-fueled HCCI combustion and the effects of engine load, speed, and valve overlap on it are the main points of investigation. The results show that: diesel-fueled HCCI combustion has two-stage heat release rate (low temperature and high temperature heat release) and very low $NO_x$ emission, combustion stability of the HCCI engine is worse at lower load because of misfire and at higher load because of knock, the increase in engine speed aids combustion stability at lower load because the heat loss is reduced, and increasing negative valve overlap can increase in-cylinder temperature which aids combustion stability at lower load but harms it at higher load.

Maritime safety has been more critical recently due to the occurrence of shipboard accidents involving prime movers. As such, the propulsion shafting design and construction plays a vital role in the safe operation of the vessel other than focusing on being cost-efficient. Smaller vessels propulsion shafting system normally install high speed four-stroke diesel engine with reduction gear for propulsion efficiency. Due to higher cylinder combustion pressures, flexible couplings are employed to reduce the increased vibratory torque. In this paper, an actual vibration measurement and theoretical analysis was carried out on a propulsion shafting with V18.3L engine installed on small car-ferry and revealed higher torsional vibration. Hence, a rubber-block type flexible coupling was installed to attenuate the transmitted vibratory torque. Considering the flexible coupling application factor, reduction gear stability due to torque variation was analyzed in accordance with IACS(International Association of Classification Societies) M56 and the results are presented herein.
Opening agricultural market progresses radically, reducing cost of high quality agricultural products becomes urgent. Aerial application using an agricultural helicopter helps precise and timely spraying and reduces labor intensity and pollution. The development of an agricultural helicopter was necessary for taking advantages of both technique and economy. In this study, as the first stage of developing an unmanned helicopter capable of 20kg payload, an engine was selected and a prototype transmission was designed for an agricultural helicopter. Prony type dynamo-meter was constructed, the engine was tested and then performance curve was obtained. The centrifugal clutch was engaged at the rotation speed of 3,500-4,000 rpm. Maximum power was expected at the engine speed of 5,900-6,200 rpm when adjusted at the optimal output. Based on the test results, the transmission was designed for driving main rotor shaft.

We made a selection of engine operating conditions in the natural aspiration type diesel engine as load and speed. The effects on the power, smoke emission and cylinder pressure characteristics of these variations in operating conditions were observed experimentally. Also, the smoke emission was predicted by using the Arrhenius equation and empirical equation of the smoke emission was made. At the same time, the correlations, between the combustion and smoke emission characteristic were examined. From the above results, it is clear that to prevent power dropping and to decrease exhaust fume whin the conditions are changed, one should improve the intake system. To do this, the best way is to lower the air-fuel mixing ratio. We found that the parameters of the indicated mean effective pressure, maximum pressure and its location and combustion duration, etc. change the motion in accordance with the conditions described above. Also, we found that the variation of the pressure cycle comes from an amplified variation of the early part of process. From the analysis of comparing combustion and exhaust fume, the exhaust fume is produced at the latter time of combustion and decreased when the combustion ratio is higher. Also, we developed a special formula which can predict the exhaust fume value according to the engine load and speed.
In order to improve the combustion efficiency of the agricultural engine, an ignition timing control system was developed and tested. The control system was composed of the CDI ignition circuit, the microcomputer and the interfacing devices. In this study, the simplicity of the control system and the flexibility of the control strategy were emphasized for the precision, the applicability and the economical efficiency. The hardware was consisted in almost the same compositions as those of the automobile engine. The softwares of the control algorithms were developed to three types depending on the combination of the quasi-adaptive control and the open loop control which had the different spark advance equations according to the input variables such as engine speed, exhaust gas temperature and brake torque. The test results were summarized as follows: 1. By using the computer control system, the fuel consumption efficiency could be improved and the fuel consumption could be reduced by 0 to 57% compared to that of the fixed spark advance system. 2. The fuel consumption of the control mode with the quasi-adaptive algorithm was reduced by average 0.8% compared to that of the control mode without quasi-adaptive algorithm. 3. It was found that the control mode with the quasi-adaptive algorithm adopting single input of engine speed had most applicability and economical efficiency among three types of the control algorithms.

On account of the development of the high speed internal combustion engines, several methods for increasing burning velocity has been investigated lately. Installation of a squash area on a cylinder head is one of the simple and practical method to induce the strong tubulant flow of air-fuel mixtureinto a combustion chamber. In this study, a four-stroke engine used for agricultural purpose was tested as an experimental model. A mathematical model of the squash velocity was derived, and also, several characteristics of the squash phenomena during the motoring of the engine used as a modelwere investigated. The results obtained were as follows: (1) Mathematical model of squash velocity was established and cheked (2) Squaash velocity and engine speed were found to be proportional to the squash area while they were inversely proportional to the squash width. (3) Squash velocity and crank angle at which the squash velocity become its peak were influenced by the magnitude of squash clearance: increase of squash clearance made squash velocity reduced acd made the peak of the squash velocity for from the top dead center and (4) When the squash area is divided in small areas baving unit width along the squash section, squash velocity at each unit width was proportional to the magnitude of the squash distance covered by the unit width.
