  • SpaceX has lowered rocket launch cost innovatively and put first stage reuse to the practical use with Falcon 9. Now the company is developing Starship system that is fully reusable with the heaviest payload in the world. So the system can lower the cost much more and fulfull more diverse mission. For the system the company have developed Raptor engine which is a full-flow staged combustion cycle one with methane fuel. And for the full reusability the company is manufacturing and testing the system prototypes with the barely used technologies such as stainless steel tank, belly flop and retropropulsion during descent. In this study the specification, missions and design features of the system are investigated. Also the development processes of Raptor engine and initial 13 Starship prototypes, which have been manufactured very rapidly, are presented.

  • There has been significant increase in demand of launch opportunities from the small satellite sector that represents the new space era. Providing smallsat-dedicated launch service at an affordable price is a new business model many startup companies have pursued, which requires innovative solutions for cost reduction in combination of low cost components, volume production and optimized manufacturing. We set out a preceding study at KARI to develop a suite of critical and cost-cutting technologies in preparation for a two-staged small launch vehicle development, based on the liquid rocket engine technologies developed from the Nuri program in accordance with the 3rd master plan for national space development. In this work, we introduce the concept of a two-staged small launch vehicle that aims to be innovative and cost competitive for small satellites, and describe mission design results including staging as well as overall vehicle configuration of the launch vehicle.

  • A mim turbo-shaft engine of 50HP for UAV, which can be easily modified to turbo-prop and turbo-jet engine by sharing the core engine and has many applications to civilian demands and munitions, will be developed This kind of micro gas turbine engine has been developed mostly by the corporations which have special technology but are small in its scale. Especially, the gas turbine engine can be easily applied to other fields and developed by domestic technology, so that the sharing of technology is planed to realize through the cooperations with academies and research institutes. In this paper, the gas turbine engine, which has the compressor ratio of 3.8, the turbine inlet temperature of l180K and the engine speed higher than 100,000 rpm, is composed of centrifugal compressor, combustor, gas generator turbine, free power turbine and gear box. The competitiveness of the gas turbine engine can be obtained from minimizing its cost by the utilization of domestic infrastructure for the performance test and the decisive outsourcing.

  • Purpose: In this study, a hybrid power system was developed for agricultural machines with a 20-KW output capacity, and it was attached to a multi-purpose cultivator to improve the performance of the cultivator, which was evaluated using output tests. Methods: The hybrid system combined heterogeneous sources: an internal-combustion engine and an electric power motor. In addition, a power splitter was developed to simplify the power transmission structure. The cultivator using the hybrid system was designed to have increased fuel efficiency and output power and reduced exhaust gas emissions, while maintaining the functions of existing cultivators. Results: The fuel consumption for driving the cultivator in the hybrid engine vehicle (HEV) mode was 341 g/KWh, which was 36% less than the consumption in the engine (ENG) mode for the same load. The maximum power take off output of the hybrid power system was 12.7 KW, which was 38% more than the output of the internal-combustion engine. In the HEV mode, harmful exhaust gas emissions were reduced; i.e., CO emissions were reduced by 36~41% and NOx emissions were reduced by 27~51% compared to the corresponding emissions in the ENG mode. Conclusions: The hybrid power system improved the fuel efficiency and reduced exhaust gas emissions in agricultural machinery. Lower exhaust gas emissions of the hybrid system have considerable advantages in closed work environments such as crop production facilities; therefore, agricultural machinery with less exhaust gas emissions should be commercialized. However, the high manufacturing cost and complexity of the proposed system are challenges which need to be solved in the future.

  • This paper represents an analysis of the economic impact of firing natural gas/diesel and natural gas/by-product oil mixtures in diesel engine power plants. The objects of analysis is a power plant with electricity generation capacity (300 kW). Using performance data of original diesel engines, the fuel consumption characteristics of the duel fuel engines were simulated. Then, economic assessment was carried out using the performance data and the net present value method. A special focus was given to the evaluation of fuel cost saving when firing natural gas/diesel and natural gas/by-product oil mixtures instead of the pure diesel firing case. Analyses were performed by assuming fuel price changes in the market as well as by using current prices. The analysis results showed that co-firing of natural gas/diesel and natural gas/by-product oil would provide considerable fuel cost saving, leading to meaningful economic benefits.

  • An automotive engine cooling system is closely related with overall engine performances, such as reduction of fuel consumption, decrease of air pollution, and increase of engine life. Because of complex reaction between each component, the direct experiment, using a vehicle, takes high cost, long time, and slow response to the system change. Therefore, a computer simulation would provide the designer with an inexpensive and effective tool for design, development, and optimization of the engine cooling system over a wide range of operating conditions. In this work, it has been predicted the thermal performance of the engine cooling system in cases of stationary mode, constant speed mode, and city-drive mode by mathematical modelling of each component and numerical analysis. The components are engine, radiator, heater, thermostat, water pump, and cooling fans. Since the engine model is the most important, that is divided into eight sub-sections. The volume mean temperature of eight sub-sections are simultaneously calculated at a time. For detail calculation, the radiator and heater are also divided into many sub-sections like control volumes in finite difference method. Each sub-section is assumed to consist of three parts, coolant, tube with fin, and air. Hence it has been developed the simulation program that can be used in case of design and system configuration changes. The overall performance results obtained by the program were desirable and the time-traced tendencies of the results agreed fairly well with those of actual situations.

  • A virtual engine test based on "Numerical test cell" can extremely reduce the time and cost for the development of a hardware by coupling multidisciplinary analysis. This paper introduces the development activities of full engine simulation programs in U.S.A. and Europe, with the their related techniques(the engineering models, the simulation environment and high performance computing) based on the NPSS(Numerical Propulsion System Simulation). NASA Glenn research conte. leads the development efforts of NPSS by assembling the current codes and improving their Auctions. VIVACE(Value Improvement through a Virtual Aeronautical Collaborative Enterprise), a consortium of universities, research centers and companies in Europe, is developing the PROOSIS(PRopulsion Object Oriented Simulation Software). The capability for the domestic development is also estimated by surveying the current status.

  • A diesel truck of 1 ton is re-powered by a gasoline engine and the fuelling system of gasoline engine modified to gasoline/CNG bi fuel system. The engine characteristics such as fuel economy and power are evaluated by driving rest, sloping test and dynamometer. The driving test prove the driving cost is saved by 55% and the maximum speed is raised by 13%, which is mainly due to the higher calorific value of CNG. The sloping test is done on the road of which slope is 15%. The truck shows the mean velocity of 88km/h, which means that a re-powered truck is working fine. The BHP are measured by dynamometer. The power and torque produced by a re-powered truck are reduced by 13% and 14% respectively from the power of gasoline engine. The BHP reduction is one of main problems which one has to solve in near future.
