Engine valve seat is a functionally important part for maintaining engine performance. The progress of automotive technology has increased the severity of conditions to which it is exposed, especially as regards LPG fuel engines and turbocharger. Therefore, it requires excellent heat and wear resistance to meet the severe condition inside the engine. In the present study, effects of solid lubricants such as CaF$_2$, MnS and MoS$_2$ on microstructure and mechanical properties of sintered Fe alloys for valve srats have been investigated for the development of valve seat material with high temerature wear resistance. As a results of engine simulation test, 0.5 wt% CaF$_2$ specimen showed the most excellent property, but in the overall aspect of view valve recession has increased with increasing the amount of solid lubricants.
Since the 1960's, exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) has been used effectively in spark ignition(SI) engines to control the exhaust emissions of the oxides of nitrogen(NOx). The most important requirements for the application of EGR systems to conventional SI engines are controllable flow rate and good dynamic response. In order to evaluate the characteristics of the electronic EGR valve, a test bench which is consisted of blower, heater, air flow meter and driving unit for electronic EGR valve was set up to simulate engine operating conditions. During the tests, the valve actuation parameters were controlled and the valve lifts and flow rates were measured to infer the characteristics of EGR valve. The results confirmed the capabilities of mathematical analysis and it seems that the correction for the valve lift and potentiometer output is necessary to achieve precise control of EGR rates.
Emission reduction in the cold start period of SI engines is crucial to meet stringent emission regulations such as SULEV Emissoin reduction is the starting point of the study in the which the variable valve timing (VVT) technology may be one promising method to minimize cold start emissions while maintaining engine performance. This is because it is possible to change valve overlap and residual gas fraction during cold start and idle operations. Our previous study showed that spark timing is another important factor for reducing cold-start emissions since it affects warm-up time of close-coupled catalysts (CCC) by changing exhaust gas temperature. However, even though these factors may be favorable for reduction of emissions, they may deteriorate combustion stability in these operating conditions. This means that the two variables should be optimized for best exhaust emissions and engine stability. This study investigated the effects of valve and spark timings in idle performance such as combustion stability and exhaust emissions. Experiments showed that valve timings significantly affected engine stability and exhaust emissions, especially CO and $NO_x$, due to change in residual gas fraction within the combustion chamber. Spark timing also affects HC emissions and exhaust gas temperature. Yet it has no significant effects on combustion stability. A control strategy of proper valve timing and spark timing is suggested in order to achieve a reduction in exhaust emissions and a stable operation of the engine in a cold start and idle operation.
Two engines, one is conventional DOHC 4 valve and the other is narrow valve angle, were used to compare the characteristics of swirl motion generation in the cylinder. One intake port is deactivated to induce swirl flow. A PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) was applied to measure in-cylinder velocity field according to inlet valve angle during intake and compression stroke. The results show that the flow patterns of narrow valve engine are much more stable and well arranged compared with the normal engine over the entire intake and compression stroke except early intake stage, and very strong swirl motion is generated at the end of compression stage in this engine nevertheless using straight port which is unfavorable for swirl generating. In the normal engine, however, strong swirl motion induced during intake stroke is destroyed as the compression progresses.

The EGR is needed for one of various strategies to reduce NOx emission. But to get the proper EGR rate the intake and exhaust system become complicated. That is a reason why we consider using the built0in EGR system. The built-in EGR is a system which reduces Nox by controling the residual gas fraction in cylinder by changing valve timing and valve lift of intake and exhaust. In this paper characteristics of volumetric efficiency and residual gas fraction in cylinder were investigated for various engine speeds by changing valve timing and valve lift of intake and exhaust. In this paper characteristics of volumetric efficiency and residual gas fraction in cylinder were investigated for various engine speeds by changing valve timing and valve lift of intake and exhaust in the 4 stroke-cycle diesel engine. Volumetric efficiency and residual gas fraction were calculated by the method of characteristics. As the results the possibility of suing the built-in EGR system was confirmed.
This paper presents the characteristics of the gas flow in the engine cylinder under various intake flow conditins. The particle tracking velovimetry(PTV) was used to anlayze the gas flow pattern and flow field in the cylinder. Effects of tumble intensifying valve(TIV), swirl intensifying valve(SIV) and one-valve deactivated condition on in-cylinder flow patterns were compared with the baseline engine udner 600rpm motoring condition. In addtion, tumbel ration was estimated rwith results of in -cylinder flow fields. Base on experimental results, the tumble ration of in-cylinder flow field has the maximum value at the bottom dead center for the different four inlet conditions. In TIV condition, the tumble ration is 1.35 times larger than that of baseline engine and 1 intake valve deactivated condition is effective to improve in-cylinder swirl motion.
The 3/2-way valve supplies the high pressure air to ship engine for starting engine. In this paper, the high pressure 3/2 way valve for ship engine has the goal as reverse engineering by searching the fluid characteristic at this valve. The reverse engineering of 3/2-way valve is measured directly by Verier-calipers and is compared with 3D scanner. The fluid characteristic in this valve is used for a simulation method by ANSYS CFX 12.1. On the contrary, discs and the shaft are as the important components on numerical simulation by controlling the air flow at this valve. The fluid characteristics are seen to make high velocity and complicated vortex around the shaft. And the flow coefficient is calculated in order to apply for industrial field.
Ball poppet valve type high pressure hydrogen injection valve actuated by solenoid has been developed for the feasibility of practical use of hydrogen fueled engine with direct injection and the precise control of fuel injection ratio in hydrogen fueled engine with dual injection. The gas-tightness of ball poppet injection valve is improved by the introduction of ball-shaped valve face, valve end typed spherical pair, and valve stem with rotating blade. Ball poppet valve is mainly closed by differential pressure due to the area difference between valve fillet and pressure piston. So, it can be operated by solenoid actuator with small driving force. From the evaluation of ball poppet injection valve, it was found that the gastightness and controlment of this injection valve are better than those of injection valve had been developed before.

In this study, the variations of swirl center according to evaluating position have been investigated in a steady flow bench of SI engine. For the experiments, two engine heads with different intake valve angles ($11^{\circ}$ and $26^{\circ}$) were tested in the flow bench by varying the evaluating position (1.75~6.0B) and valve lift (2~10 mm). Particle image velocimetry was used to measure the velocity field inside the engine cylinder. The swirl center position is found with a critical point theory and the intensity of turbulence is calculated from PIV velocity data. The results show that the center of swirl is located closer to the center of cylinder and turbulence intensity is lower, when the intake valve angle is the smaller. It is conventional to evaluate the swirl ratio at 1.75B position in the steady flow bench of SI engine. At this position, however, the distance of swirl center from the cylinder center scatters significantly for the variation of valve lift, and the turbulence intensity is much stronger regardless of the valve angle. Thus, to estimate the flow at the end of compression stroke in a real engine from the data in the steady flow experiments, the evaluation position should be moved further downstream more than 4.5B.
Higher compression ratio is required in diesel engine to ignite the fuel that leads to better efficiency. For complete combustion inside the cylinder it is important to ensure the clean air flow with free of debris and as cool as possible. In this manner, modification of intake valve arrangements is taken in to consideration importantly. In this paper, the intake valve arrangements are modified with newly designed valve mixer. It causes swirl flow of air through the intake port that mixing with the fuel followed by complete combustion. The use of valve mixer reduces the carbon sediment formation on valve fillet and its face area as the carbon particles gradually take place on it after certain running period. It therefore, helps to increase the valve lifetime. And at the same time it reduces the exhaust elements i.e. soot from the automobiles to a significant level.
