  • Pintle injector is known to have been adopted as injector of Lunar Module Descent Engine (LMDE) and contributed to success of the Apollo program and recently used in merlin engine. In this study, 500N Lab-Scale pintle injector thruster was manufactured and the combustion experiment with LOx/GCH4 was conducted. However, the proto-type thruster was showed some problems, such as low combustion efficiency and melting of pintle tip. To solve these problems, the flow guide in pintle tip was suggested through the CFD simulation. After addition of flow guide module, the combustion efficiency increased and pintle tip did not melt until the end of combustion.

  • This paper presents an optimization of gear web design used in a main gear train of an engine reduction gearbox for a rotorcraft. The optimization involves the minimization of a total weight, transmission error, misalignment, and face load distribution factor. In particular, three design variables such as a gear web thickness, location of rim-web connection, and location of shaft-web connection were set as design parameters. In the optimization process, web, rim and shaft of gears were converted from the 3D CAD geometry model to the finite element model, and then provided as input to the gear simulation program, MASTA. Lastly, NSGA-II optimization method was used to find the best combination of design parameters. As a result of the optimization, the total weight, transmission error, misalignment, face load distribution factor were all reduced, and the maximum stress was also shown to be a safe level, confirming that the overall gear performance was improved.

  • A bolt-clamped ultrasonic viscometer was designed and fabricated using a pair of ring-shaped piezoelectric ceramic resonators. For its compactness and low operation frequencies, simulation of piezoelectric resonators was carried out using an ATILA program. Ring-shaped resonators using $0.05Pb(Mn_{1/3}Sb_{2/3})O_3-0.95Pb(Zr_{0.475}Ti_{0.525})O_3$ ceramics were prepared by a conventional ceramic processing, which were then clamped with a pair of metal caps. The fabricated sensor module with a small volume of less than 1 $cm^3$ and an operation frequency as low as 26.5 kHz showed a good relationship between its quality factor and the viscosity of oil.

  • Due to its accuracy and efficiency, reduced kinetic mechanism of diesel surrogate is widely used as fuel model when applying 3-D diesel engine simulation. But for the well-developed prediction of diesel surrogate reduced kinetic mechanism, it is important to know some meaningful factors which affect to ignition delay time. Meanwhile, ignition delay time consists of two parts. One is the chemical ignition delay time related with the chemical reaction, and the other is the physical ignition delay time which is affected by physical behavior of the fuel droplet. Especially for chemical ignition delay time, chemical properties of each fuel were studied for a long time, but researches on their mixtures have not been done widely. So it is necessary to understand the chemical characteristics of their mixtures for more precise and detailed modeling of surrogate diesel oil. And it shows same ignition trend of paraffin mixture with those of single component, and shorter ignition delay at low/high initial temperature when mixing paraffin and toluene.

  • Oil filters for vehicular parts are used under high and low temperatures as the engine is cooled, and defects can be generated with repeated changes in the operating environment and with changes in the shape, such as very high internal losses for the bolts. Visually checking for defects inside a bolt is impossible. Nondestructive evaluation methods such as eddy current testing (ECT) are recommended as a more effective way to examine inside a bolt and detect surface defects in a short amount of time. In this study, the fit bobbin coil eddy current probe was applied to checking the bolts. The bolt parameters were calculated by using a COMSOL analysis program to obtain parameters for professional interior design and fault diagnosis.

  • A fuel injection system using an ECU HILS as an alternate to a vehicle test for the fuel injectors was developed. The throttle position, vehicle speed, engine speed, crank position, cam position, intake air flow, and several other sensor signals that are supplied to the ECU were measured and recorded as a data file for a vehicle driven in the FTP-75 mode in a chassis dynamometer. Electric signals that are equivalent to the sensor signals from the vehicle are reconstructed from the recorded data file using data acquisition boards, microprocessors, and computers. All sensor signals are supplied to the ECU with synchronized timing using a computer program. The findings show that the cost and time of vehicle experiments can be reduced using the ECU HILS system. Moreover, the repeatability of the generation of sensor signals can enhance the accuracy of a range of experiment related to vehicle testing. An ECU scanner that scans the sensor signals that are input to the ECU through a serial port was used to assess the accuracy of the reconstructed signals. The scanning results show good agreement with the reconstructed input signals. Injectors were connected to the ECU HILS system and were driven by the system to measure the quantity of injected fuel.

  • The compressor's efficiency affects on the fuel consumption of the vehicle because the compressors for car air-conditioning system are operated by engine-driven. Especially, the refrigerant is being changed recently from R134a to substitution refrigerant to protect environment pollution that people concerned about. However, that leads to lower efficiency of the car airconditioning system and worse fuel consumption of the vehicle. Thus, this paper is focused on the methods for improvement of the compressor's efficiency that affects on the fuel consumption of the vehicle by numerical analysis for compressor's performance and the measurement of cylinder volume and pressure when the compressor is being operated.

  • Numerical simulations of closed-type and open-type single injectors were conducted to investigate the flow characteristics of a swirl-coaxial injector used in a liquid rocket engine. Numerical analysis was conducted using a commercial program ANSYS FLUENT. The injectors has three models with different recess length. Numerical analysis was conducted to investigate the variation of the flow characteristics of the injector when the flow condition were changed. It was also compare and analyzed with experimental results. The results obtained from the numerical simulation show that the difference between the inlet pressure and the discharge coefficient is not significant.

  • Exhaust gas from the combustion of automobiles adversely affects the human body and even pollutes the atmosphere. This study investigated the influence of exhaust gas change on intake manifold using the nozzle. First, the flow analysis was performed using the 3D flow analysis program. When the nozzle inlet air velocity increased, the average air velocity in the nozzle diameters of ${\Phi}2.5$ and ${\Phi}5$ increased 37.3% and 31.9% respectively at the intake manifold outlet. As the nozzle inlet air velocity increased, the maximum flow rate of air increased to 42.2% and 32.6%, respectively at nozzle diameters of ${\Phi}2.5$ and ${\Phi}5$. In order to verify the analysis results, experiments on the exhaust gas were performed in the engine simulation system. As the nozzle inlet velocity increased, HC values decreased by 42.4% and 31.4% at nozzle diameters of ${\Phi}2.5$ and ${\Phi}5$, respectively. And CO values decreased by 40.7% and 31.1% at nozzle diameters of ${\Phi}2.5$ and ${\Phi}5$.

  • Electric propulsion aircraft are being actively researched in the aviation field in recent years to solve environmental and noise problems caused by existing gas turbine engine. In particular, research on a thrust motor as a core component of an electric power propulsion system and an inverter for driving it is actively being conducted. In this paper, a motor with high specific power is selected to determine characteristics of aircraft that are sensitive to weight and volume. Power loss of the inverter is then simulated. In the simulation, the selected motor and power device were modeled using PSIM, a power electronics analysis tool. Inverter power loss according to switching frequency was then analyzed.
