Automobile Engine Diagnostic System by Current Monitoring to Self Motor (시동모터 전류 관찰에 의한 자동차엔진 압축압력 검사장치)

  • Four-stroke cycles in an automobile engine are suction stroke, compression stroke, combustion stroke and exhaustion stroke. A normal operation of engine in compression and power stroke must be processed in optimal fuel-air pressure. In this paper we describe a development of measuring equipment for engine cylinder pressure with observing supply current to self motor(start motor). By comparing the current wave on pressure of the 4 or 6 cylinder in engine, a abnormal cylinder state will be found. The validity of the proposed measuring equipment was shown by experiment for real automobile.

Monitoring of Rotational Movements of Two Piston Rings in a Cylinder Using Radioisotopes

  • A radiotracer technique has been developed to monitor the rotational movement of two piston rings in one cylinder during engine operation. The rings were labeled with two different kinds of radioisotopes, i.e. $^{60}$ Co and $^{192}$ Ir, for identification of the top ring from the second ring. The radiotracers were implanted in a small hole bored on the inner side of each piston ring. The rings were installed in a single cylinder hydrogen engine and three Nal scintillation detectors were mounted around the engine block to measure the gamma radiation. The angle of ring-gap orientation was determined from the radiation counts measured with the three detectors during engine operation. Two windows (upper window for $^{60}$ Co and lower window for $^{192}$ Ir) were set on each ratemeter to count radiation from the two isotopes separately. Procedure to convert the radiation counts to the position of the ring gap was established. With the software programmed with MS-Visualbasic, radiation counts were compared with the reference responses that were measured at angular intervals of 10$^{\circ}$for each piston ring in advance of the experiment. The result was used for the evaluation of the relationship between the orientation of ring-gaps and oil consumption. It was found that an increase in the oil consumption rate of a specific operation condition was closely related to the relative phase angle of the two piston rings.

Study on Electric and Magnetic Characteristics of Engine Oil in Transport Truck (운송용 트럭에 대한 엔진오일의 전기·자기적 특성연구)

  • In this paper, we investigate the electric and magnetic properties of the engine oil, and estimate its changing time in transport truck. The four diesel trucks are selected, and the capacitance and inductance are investigated with parallel capacitor and induction coil, respectively. The measured capacitance gradually increases up to 10,000~14,000 km due to the activation of antioxidant, and then decreasing phenomena happen. The inductance decreases and the saturation began in 10,000~14,000 km range. Although the behavior of inductance is different from that of capacitance, but changing points are similar. From those results, we can estimate the changing time of engine oil is around 10,000~14,000 km and the inductance can be used for monitoring of engine oil in transport trucks.

  • This paper describes the heat resistance characteristics of the imaging device installed in behind the engine due to monitoring the engine condition, and this paper includes the introduction and development of the imaging probe. Because the imaging device which is at the rear end of the engine is exposed to a high temperature and high pressure, the stability of the device should be secured by changing the device shape and supplying cooling water. The imaging probe in ADD engine test facility is installed at the rear end of the engine, and it is designed by reflecting the heat resistance characteristics to ensure the stability of the device.

  • Marine diesel engines operate in environments in which damage easily occurs from corrosion. Recently, damage to cylinder liners has increased from corrosion wear caused by increased engine power. This damage can cause serious problems in the economy. Thus, many researchers have treated and studied damaged cylinder liners. However, a method is necessary for real-time monitoring of damage to cylinder liners during operation of the engine, before serious damage can occur. This study carries out reciprocating friction and wear tests on a cast iron specimen under various corrosion atmospheres and verifies the variations of friction coefficient and friction surface. Additionally, the friction coefficient and friction status are predicted by using a neural network that learns the vibration and frequency spectrum data from an acceleration sensor. According to our conclusions, amplitude is distributed highly at high frequencies, and values of standard deviation and kurtosis are high when damage to the friction surface is serious. The accuracy rate of the friction coefficient predicted by the neural network is over 80% of the real measured value without NaCl, and application of the neural network is very effective for diagnosing the friction condition and damage to the cylinder liner.

  • This test cell is developed to provide the fundamentals of operational mechanism and structural configuration, and further to verify thermodynamic calculation with this test data to the institutes or laboratories research and study gas turbine engine for academic purpose. The test cell is installed to monitor and collect real-time data as to temperature, pressure, thrust, fuel flow, and air flow etc. using by NI DAQ(Data acquisition)device and LabVIEW program based on 30lbf-micro turbojet engine.

  • In this paper, Power Generator modeling for LNG ship has been performed and monitoring system has been developed in MATLAB/SIMULINK. The principal component of Power Generator are engine part(Diesel Engine, Turbine Engine) which provides the mechanical power and synchronous generator which convert the mechanical power into electrical power. Also, load sharing between paralleled generators has been performed to share a total load that exceeds the capacity of a single generator and designated ship lumped load simulations have been carried out. A validity of these systems has been verified by comparison between simulation results and estimated result from the designated lumped load.

  • We propose a newly developed automobile sensor monitoring system incorporated with a tire pressure monitoring sensor(TPMS). The RF-transmitter based on a tire pressure sensor, sends a frame data about measured tire-pressure to RF receiver. And the various sensing signals based on sensors such as fuel-level sensor, engine oil level sensor and temperature sensors, are converted into 10-bit digital data. The microprocessor displays converting data such as tire pressure, trip distance, fuel quantity, coolant temperature and car-room temperature, on LCD panel. The proposed system can be successfully adapted to monitoring of the tire pressure and various automobile sensors.

  • This study is a development on condition based maintenance(CBM) technology which is a core item of future autonomous ships. It is developing to design & installation of condition monitoring system and acquisition & processing of data from ongoing ships for fault prediction & prognosis of engine in operation. The ultimate goal of this study is to develop a predicts and decision support software for marine engine faults. To do this, the FMEA and fault tree analysis of the main engine should be accompanied by the analysis of classification of system, identification of the components, the type of faults, and the cause and phenomenon of the failure. Finally, the CBM system solution software could predict and diagnose the failure of main engine through integrated analysis for bid-data of ongoing ships and engineering knowledge. Through this study, it is possible to pro-actively cope with abnormal signals of engine and to manage efficiently, and as a result, expected that marine accident and ship operation loss during navigation will be prevented in advance.

  • On-Board diagnostic systems are installed in passenger cars and light trucks on today. During the 1970's and early 1980's manufacturers started using electronic means to control engine functions and diagnose engine problems. This wa primarily to meet EPA emission standards. The CARB requires that, by model year 1996, all vehicle sold in California contain a certain minimum "On-Board Diagnostic" capability to diagnose emissions-related failures of the engine control system. These diagnostic requirements have been designated as OBD with a goal of monitoring all of the emissions-related components on-board the vehicle for proper operation.
