  • The combination of physical models of an advanced engine control system was proposed to obtain sophisticated combustion control in ultra-lean combustion, including homogeneous compression-ignition and activated radical combustion with a light load and in stoichiometric mixture combustion with a full load. Physical models of intake, combustion and engine thermodynamics were incorporated, in which the effects of residual gas from prior cycles on intake air mass and combustion were taken into consideration. The combined control of compression ignition at a light load and sparit ignition at full load for a high compession ratio engine was investigated using simulations. The control strategies of the variable valve timing and the intake pressure were clarified to keep auto-ignition at a light load and prevent knock at a full load.

  • The infrared signature that is associated with an aircraft is mainly caused by heat released from the engine and the exhaust plume. In this study, a test-system was designed to observe the overall infrared signature characteristics of a turbofan engine during operation under ground running conditions and the infrared reduction features that result from different exhaust nozzle configurations. A test stand was designed for the 1400 lbf class turbofan engine that included a bell-mouth type intake, fuel supply system, a measurement system, and a data acquisition/control system. The design and verification of the test system were conducted so that the basic nozzle and various 2D nozzles could be applied to study the infrared signature produced by a turbofan engine exhaust.

  • In order to operate a combine harvester at the optimum conditions and maximum performance, a forward speed control system(FSCS) was designed and develped. The FSCS consisted of engine, continuously variable V-belt transmission, threshing unit, traveling unit, detecting unit, and controller. Each components of the system were mathematically modeled. By a computer simulation, the effects of control parameters such as hydraulic piston speed, speed ratio, dead band of engine speed on the system performance were analysed, and the optimum control conditions were identified. The system appeared to be the most stable at the hydraulic piston speed of 10.6mm/s and the speed ratio of 0.4. The proper dead band of engine speed appeared to be 30rpm through the simulation and verification tests.

  • In diesel engines, accurate EGR control is important due to its effect on nitrogen oxide and particulate matter emissions. Conventional EGR control system comprises a PI feedback controller for tracking target air mass flow and a feedforward controller for fast response. Physically, the EGR flow is affected by EGR valve lift and thermodynamic properties of the EGR path, such as pressures and temperatures. However, the conventional feedforward control output is indirectly derived from engine operating conditions, such as engine rotational speed and fuel injection quantity. Accordingly, the conventional feedforward control action counteracts the feedback controller in certain operating conditions. In order to improve this disadvantage, in this study, we proposed feedforward EGR control algorithm based on a physical model of the EGR system. The proposed EGR control strategy was validated with a 3.0 liter common rail direct injection diesel engine equipped with a DC motor type EGR valve.

  • According to the recent increase of demands for multi-function and economics on hydraulic excavator, it is required that excavator should have simple operation, higher and operational efficiency. However, it is difficulty for current hydraulic system to satisfy demands fully. This study shows that new control system improves power transmission efficiency, work capability of engine and hydraulic system of current excavator.

  • It is essential to develop a transient analysis model for the turbopump-fed type liquid rocket engine development, especially for deriving the number of test and its parameters. In this study we proposed a mathematical model of turbopump-fed type liquid rocket engine, and inspected transient mode changes of a rocket engine according to variations of thrust control valve opening ratio. To verify the results, we solved the same problem with AnaSyn software from Russia, and concluded that the results of transient code we developed deviated within 2% from AnaSyn results. Also, using the transient engine analysis code we showed the possibility to find out the system level design Parameters of the components. For example, we modeled a pressure stabilizer which is used to control the consistency of mixture ratio in the gas generator as forced damping system, and found the stability range of the natural frequency and the damping ratio with the transient engine system analysis code.

  • Recently, the portion of electronic control in an engine system has been increasing with the aim of meeting the requirements of emissions and fuel efficiency of the engine system in the construction machinery industry. Correspondingly, the complexity of the engine management system (EMS) has increased. This study developed an engine HiLS system for reducing the cost and time required for function development for the EMS. The engine model for HiLS is composed of air, fuel, torque, and dynamometer models. Further, the mean value method is applied to the developed HiLS engine model. This model is validated by its application to a heavy-duty diesel engine equipped with an exhaust gas recirculation system and a turbocharger. Test results demonstrate that the model has accuracy greater than 90 and also verify the feasibility of the virtual calibration process.

  • LPG has been well known as a clean alternative fuel for vehicles. As a fundamental study on liquid phase LPG injection (hereafter LPLI) system application to heavy-duty engine, engine output and combustion performance were investigated with various operating conditions using a single cylinder engine equipped with the LPLI system. Experimental results revealed that no problems were occurred in application of the LPG fuel to heavy-duty engine, and that volumetric efficiency and engine output, by 10% approximately, were increased with the LPLI system. It was resulted from the decrease of the intake manifold temperature through liquid phase LPG fuel injection. These results provided an advantage in the decrease of the exhaust gas temperature, in the control of knocking phenomena, spark timing and compression ratio. The LPLI engine could normally operated under $\lambda$=1.5 or EGR 30% condition. The optimized swirl ratio for the heavy duty LPG engine was found around R_s$ = 2.0.

  • Fuel injection system has more benefits in power, fuel consumption and emission than carburetor system even in high speed small engine. Up to date fuel injection system is used in motor car but is not used in motorcycles in Korea. EFI (Electronic fuel injection) system which has ECU can control precise fuel supply to variable RPM in engine. The purpose of this study is the investigation of effects of fuel injection system to improve the engine performance and efficiency in variable revolution of high speed small engine which is 4 Valves SOHC single cylinder engine used in motorcycle.

  • The effects of recirculated exhaust gas on the characteristics of NOx and soot emissions under a wide range of engine loads were experimentally investigated by using a four-cycle, four-cylinder, sw irl chamber type, water-cooled diesel engine operating at three engine speeds. The purpose of this study was to develop the EGR-control system for reducing NOx and soot emissions simultaneously in diesel engines. The EGR system is used to reduce NOx emissions, and a novel diesel soot removal device with a cylinder-type scrubber for the experiment system was specially designed and manufactured to reduce soot contents in the recirculated exhaust gas to the intake system of the engine. The experiments were performed at the fixed fuel injection timing of 4$^{\circ}$ ATDC regardless of experimental conditions. It was found that soot emissions in exhaust gases were reduced by 20 to 70% when the scrubber was applied in the range of the experimental conditions, and that NOx emissions decreased markedly, especially at higher loads, while soot emissions increased owing to the decrease in intake and exhaust oxygen concentrations, and the increase in equivalence ratio as the EGR rate is elevated.
