  • The present study investigated the optimum blending condition of protected fat, choline and yeast culture for lowering of rumen temperature. The Box Benken experimental design, a fractional factorial arrangement, and response surface methodology were employed. The optimum blending condition was determined using the rumen simulated in vitro fermentation. An additive formulated on the optimum condition contained 50% of protected fat, 25% of yeast culture, 5% of choline, 7% of organic zinc, 6.5% of cinnamon, and 6.5% of stevioside. The feed additive was supplemented at a rate of 0.1% of diet (orchard grass:concentrate, 3:7) and compared with a control which had no additive. The treatment resulted in lower volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentration and biogas than the control. To investigate the effect of the optimized additive and feed energy levels on rumen and rectal temperatures, four rumen cannulated Hanwoo (Korean native beef breed) steers were in a $4{\times}4$ Latin square design. Energy levels were varied to low and high by altering the ratio of forage to concentrate in diet: low energy (6:4) and high energy (4:6). The additive was added at a rate of 0.1% of the diet. The following parameters were measured; feed intake, rumen and rectal temperatures, ruminal pH and VFA concentration. This study was conducted in an environmentally controlled house with temperature set at $30^{\circ}C$ and relative humidity levels of 70%. Steers were housed individually in raised crates to facilitate collection of urine and feces. The adaptation period was for 14 days, 2 days for sampling and 7 days for resting the animals. The additive significantly reduced both rumen (p<0.01) and rectal temperatures (p<0.001) without depressed feed intake. There were interactions (p<0.01) between energy level and additive on ruminal temperature. Neither additive nor energy level had an effect on total VFA concentration. The additive however, significantly increased (p<0.01) propionate and subsequently had lower acetate:propionate (A/P) ratios than non-additive supplementation. High concentrate diets had significantly lower pH. Interactions between energy and additive were observed (p<0.01) in ammonia nitrogen production. Supplementation of diets with the additive resulted in lower rumen and rectal temperatures, hence the additive showed promise in alleviating undesirable effects of heat stress in cattle.

  • In recent years, the automatic remote control controller of the gamma ray irradiator malfunctions, and radiation workers are continuously exposed to radiation exposure accidents. In the non-destructive testing field, much time and resources are invested in establishing a radioactive source monitoring system in order to prevent potential incidents of radiation. In this study, the gamma-ray response properties of the lead monoxide-based radiation detector were estimated through monte carlo simulation as a previous study for the development of a radioactive source location monitoring system that can be applied universally to various non-destructive testing equipment. As a result of the study, the optimized thickness of the radiation detector varies according to the gamma-ray energy emitted from the radioactive source, and the optimized thickness gradually increases with increasing energy. In conclusion, the optimized thickness of the lead monoxide-based radiation detector was $200{\mu}m$ for the Ir-192, $150{\mu}m$ for the Se-75 and $300{\mu}m$ for the Co-60. Based on these results, the appropriate thickness of lead monoxide-based radiation detector considering secondary-electron equilibrium was evaluated to be $300{\mu}m$ for general application. These results can be used as a basic data for determining the appropriate thickness required in the radiation detector when developing a radiation source location monitoring system for universal application to various non-destructive testing equipment in the future.

  • Recently, Korean system operating conditions have gradually approached an upper limit. When a contingency occurs, the power system may have no solutions. Different from the cases of bad initial guesses or the solutions are too close to the solvability boundary in which numerical methods can be applied, for unsolvable cases, the only way to restore solvability would be structure modifications. In this paper, a new approach for corrective and preventive control to such cases is proposed in two steps: (i) finding any solution regardless its feasibility; (ii) for the infeasible solution, make it feasible with additional modifications at load buses having Distributed Energy Resources. The test case built based on the peak load profile of 2008 by KEPCO including 1336 buses is analyzed. Since reactive power compensation is optimized to restore solvability, all demands are met, therefore no blackouts happen. The proposed method was integrated in the LP program designed by power21 Corporation.

  • HEV(Hybrid Electrical Vehicle) is considered as one of the next generation vehicles. To develop the HEV, there must be a reliable simulator, by which the capacities of the power resources are tested, and the parameters of the HEV are optimized before developing the real model of the HEVs. This process can save the money for designing the HEV system and improve the system without experiments. Matlab Simulink is familiar to mechanical engineers and the program can simultaneously provide a system model and a controller in one program. Nowadays, the Simdriveline toolbox which is used for analysis a power-train system is applied to build a dynamic model for a HEV system. In this study, we make a HEV simulator with the Simdriveline toolbox and develop a controller. There are two simple strategies, applied to the controller. One strategy includes a power split ratio and a shift map which are created by user. Other strategy calculated an appropriate amount of resource's torque along specific results, and this is useful when users can't develop a fitting controller. The methodologies for configuring the simulator and its control system are presented in this paper.

  • The passive control of structures using a pendulum tuned mass damper has been extensively studied in the technical literature. As the frequency of the pendulum depends only on its length and the acceleration of gravity, to tune the frequency of the pendulum with that of the structure, the pendulum length is the only design variable. However, in many cases, the required length and the space necessary for its installation are not compatible with the design. In these cases, one can replace the classical pendulum by a virtual pendulum which consists of a mass moving over a curved surface, allowing thus for a greater flexibility in the absorber design, since the length of the pendulum becomes irrelevant and the shape of the curved surface can be optimized. A mathematical model for a building with a pendular tuned mass damper and a detailed parametric analysis is conducted to study the influence of this device on the nonlinear oscillations and stability of the main system under harmonic and seismic base excitation. In addition to the circular profiles, different curved surfaces with softening and hardening characteristics are analyzed. Also, the influence of impact on energy dissipation is considered. A detailed parametric analysis is presented showing that the proposed damper can not only reduce sharply the displacements, and consequently the internal forces in the main structure, but also the accelerations, increasing user comfort. A review of the relevant aspects is also presented.

  • A yeast strain utilizing styrene epoxide as a sole carbon and energy source was isolated from soil samples for the production of enantiopure of styrene epoxide by kinetic resolution. The strain, identified as a Rhodosporidium toruloides SJ-4, expressed an epoxide hydrolase which preferentially converted (R)-styrene epoxide into the corresponding diol. A maximum activity of 135 U/L was observed when biomass (dry cell mass) reached 6.7 g/L at 21 h of batch culture. Under the partially optimized reaction conditions ($35^{\circ}C$ and pH 8.0), the optically pure (S)-styrene epoxide was obtained with the yield of 21% when the initial substrate concentration was 100 mM. The reaction was completed at 9 h.

  • Regenerative evaporative cooling is known as an environment-friendly and energy efficient cooling method. A regenerative evaporative cooler (REC) consisting of dry and wet channels is able to cool down the air stream below the inlet wet-bulb temperature. In the regenerative evaporative cooler, the cooling effect is achieved by redirecting a portion of the air flown out of the dry channel into the wet channel and spraying water onto the redirected air. In this study, a horizontal regenerative cooler is considered. In the horizontal regenerative cooler, the flow direction of evaporating water has a right angle to the flow direction of supply air. This difference was investigated with visualization technique and simplified 2-module performance test was done in a thermo-environment chamber. Optimum design configuration is changed due to the wet channel which are easily fully covered with evaporating water and block the air flow inside the channel. Applying the optimized fin configuration design with the highly wetting surface treatment, a regenerative evaporative cooler was fabricated and tested to Identify the cooling performance improvement and operation characteristics. From the experimental results at the intake condition of $32^{\circ}C$ and 50% RH, the supply temperature was measured to be around $23.4^{\circ}C$. The cooling effectiveness based on the inlet dewpoint temperature was evaluated 73% which is almost close to the design expectation.

  • In this paper, we propose and demonstrate an optimal design of wideband pulsed gamma-ray detectors. Pulsed gamma-ray detectors are designed to operate in a dose rate of $1{\times}10^6{\sim}1{\times}10^8rad(Si)/s$. The input parameter was derived based on the energy ratio of pulse gamma-ray spectrum and the time of the energy. The sensor output current was calculated based on the dose rate control circuit. Using the N-type Epi Wafer, the optimum condition detection sensor was designed based on TCAD. The simulation results show that the optimal Epi layer thickness is 45um when applied voltage 3.3V. The doping concentrations are as follows : N-type is an Arsenic as $1{\times}10^{19}/cm^3$, P-type is a Boron as $1{\times}10^{19}/cm^3$ and Epi layer is Phosphorus as $3.4{\times}10^{12}/cm^3$. Pulse gamma-ray detector diameter is the 1.3mm.

  • Unbalanced and distorted grid voltages cause the grid side current of a current source PWM rectifier to be heavily distorted. They can also cause the DC-link current to fluctuate with a huge amplitude. In order to enhance the performance of a current-source PWM rectifier under unbalanced and harmonic grid voltage conditions, a mathematical model of a current-source PWM rectifier is established and a flexible multi-objective control strategy is proposed to control the DC-link current and grid-current. The fundamental positive/negative sequence, $5^{th}$ and $7^{th}$ order harmonic components of the grid voltage are first separated with the proposed control strategy. The grid current reference are optimized based on three objectives: 1) sinusoidal and symmetrical grid current, 2) sinusoidal grid current and elimination of the DC-current $2^{nd}$ order fluctuations, and 3) elimination of the DC-current $2^{nd}$ and $6^{th}$ order fluctuations. To avoid separation of the grid current components, a multi-frequency proportional-resonant controller is applied to control the fundamental positive/negative sequence, $5^{th}$ and $7^{th}$ order harmonic current. Finally, experimental results verify the effectiveness of proposed control strategy.
