  • As a major type of heat exchanger, the steam generator (SG) produces steam from heat energy of a nuclear power plant reactor. The steam produced by the steam generator flows into a turbine, and plays an important role in electric power generation. The heat transfer tubes in the steam generator consist of approximately 10,000 U-shaped tubes, which perform a structural role and act as thermal boundaries. The heat transfer tubes conduct the thermal energy between the primary coolant (about $320^{\circ}C$, $157kgf/cm^2$) obtained from the reactor and the secondary coolant (about $260^{\circ}C$, $60kgf/cm^2$) as part of the secondary system. Recently, the heat transfer tubes in the steam generator of the pressurized water reactor (PWR) are primarily produced from Alloy 600 and Alloy 690 seamless tubes. As a pilot study to find process parameters for the cold U-bending process using rotary draw bending, numerical and experimental investigations were conducted to produce U-shaped tubes from long straight SUS304L seamless tubes. 3D finite element simulations were run using ABAQUS Explicit with consideration of the elastic recovery. The process parameters studied were the angular speed, the operation period and the bending angle. Experimental verifications were conducted to insure the suitability of the final U-shaped configurations with respect to both ovality and wall thickness.

  • This paper describes an improved strategy for controlling the adhesion force using both the antiadhesion and adhesion layers for a successful large-area transfer process. An MPTMS (3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane) monolayer as an adhesion layer for Au/Pd thin films was deposited on Si substrates by vapor self assembly monolayer (VSAM) method. Contact angle, surface energy, film thickness, friction force, and roughness were considered for finding the optimized conditions. The sputtered Au/Pd ($\sim$17 nm) layer on the PDMS stamp without the anti-adhesion layer showed poor transfer results due to the high adhesion between sputtered Au/Pd and PDMS. In order to reduce the adhesion between Au/Pd and PDMS, an anti-adhesion monolayer was coated on the PDMS stamp using FOTS (perfluorooctyltrichlorosilane) after $O_2$ plasma treatment. The transfer process with the anti-adhesion layer gave good transfer results over a large area (20 mm $\times$ 20 mm) without pattern loss or distortion. To investigate the applied pressure effect, the PDMS stamp was sandwiched after 90$^{\circ}$ rotation on the MPTMS-coated patterned Si substrate with 1-${\mu}m$ depth. The sputtered Au/Pd was transferred onto the contact area, making square metal patterns on the top of the patterned Si structures. Applying low pressure helped to remove voids and to make conformal contact; however, high pressure yielded irregular transfer results due to PDMS stamp deformation. One of key parameters to success of this transfer process is the controllability of the adhesion force between the stamp and the target substrate. This technique offers high reliability during the transfer process, which suggests a potential building method for future functional structures.

  • Drying process is involved in the production of various products including food, textiles, paper, pharmaceuticals, and batteries. Phase change of liquid to vapor generally requires enormous thermal energy, so in order to save energy, it is advantageous to develop an appropriate drier and use it under appropriate operating conditions, depending on the characteristics of materials. However, due to the complex, multiscale heat and mass transfer occurring during drying processes, predictions of appropriate drying conditions before actual operation are not easily achieved, leading to challenges in designing driers. Here, we developed a lab-scale experimental setup to evaluate the performance of band dries. The experimental setup was used to measure the moisture content and temperature change in the materials being dried in a belt dryer. Experimental results obtained using our lab-scale setup allow us to predict the performance of a full-scale band drier, thus suggesting a practical framework for predicting the drying process of various materials and developing band driers.

  • Sensors have limited resources in sensor networks, so efficient use of energy is important. Representative clustering methods, LEACH, LEACHC, TEEN generally use direct transmission methods from cluster headers to the sink node to pass collected data. However, the communication distance of the sensor nodes at low cost and at low power is not long, it requires a data transfer through the multi-hop to transmit data to the sink node. In the existing cluster-based sensor network studies, cluster process and route selection process are performed separately in order to configure the routing path to the sink node. In this paper, in order to use the energy of the sensor nodes that have limited resources efficiently, a cluster-based multi-hop routing protocol which merges the clustering process and routing process is proposed. And the proposed method complements the problem of uneven cluster creation that may occur in probabilistic cluster methods and increases the energy efficiency of whole sensor nodes.

  • The energy transfer process between GaN and Nd ions as well as Mg codoping effect were investigated in Nd-implanted GaN films. Photoluminescence (PL) and PL excitation spectroscopies were performed on $^4F_{3/2}{\rightarrow}^4I_{9/2}$ Nd ionic level transition. At least three below bandgap traps were identified in the energy transfer process. The number of one particular trap, which is assigned to be an isoelectronic Nd trap, is increased with the Mg-codoping. The emission efficiency with above gap excitation, which emulates the electrical excitation, is further increased in GaN:Mg,Nd.

  • In recent years, there has been a growing focus on preserving the global environment and utilizing resources efficiently. The significance of energy conservation has led to the development of systems that recycle waste heat from factories and use eco-friendly refrigerants. This study aims to enhance the performance of adsorption-desorption systems using thermoelectric devices, which are known for their ability to convert temperature differences into electrical energy. The research focuses on improving the efficiency of these systems by integrating thermoelectric modules to cool the adsorption side and heat the desorption side, thus enhancing overall system performance. The experiments utilized a typical thermoelectric device and silica gel as the adsorbent. Key experimental parameters included varying the inlet air temperature and relative humidity on the desorption side. The results indicated that increasing the relative humidity of the inlet air on the desorption side significantly enhanced the overall mass transfer coefficient while reducing the completion time of the process. Similarly, higher inlet air temperatures led to an increase in the mass transfer coefficient and a decrease in process completion time. These findings suggest that optimizing the operational conditions of thermoelectric devices can substantially improve the performance of adsorption-desorption systems, offering potential benefits for applications in ventilation systems and other related fields.

  • Blending various coals during the coke making process affects the quality of coke as well as the total energy required for the process. The mathematical model based on Merrick's work developed to predict the effect of blending coals on coke making process. The Crank-Nicholson method was used to solve the model equation to predict temperature distributions, a coking time, and a total energy required during the process. The developed model successfully applied to Kwang-Yang Steel Company's coke oven to validate the model performance. It is hoped that the model can serve as a guidelines on how to blend coals during the process.

  • In this study we have synthesized Zno:Eu phosphors under various sintering atmospheres and temperatures. The analysis of X-ray diffractometer measurement indicates that for Zno:EuCl$_3$ phosphors sintered in air and vacuum 뗘 exists in the host lattice as Eu$_2$O$_3$and EuOCl respectively. From the photoluminescence for the phosphors sintered in vacuum Eu removes the broad-band emission of the ZnO host consequently isolating the red emission due to Eu$^{3+}$ ion and improves the color purity of red emission. The photoluminescence excitation and time resolving spectrum measurements suggest that energy-transfer process occurres from the self-activated defect center in ZnO host the Eu$^{3+}$ ion which exist in the host lattice in the form of EuOCl.

  • The lanthanide complexes have been anticipated to exhibit high efficiency along with a narrow emission spectrum. Photoluminescence for the lanthanide complex is characterized by a high efficiency since both singlet and triplet excitons are involve d in the luminescence process. However, the maximum external electroluminescence quantum efficiencies have exhibited values around 1% due to triplet-triplet annihilation at high current. Here, we proposed a new energy transfer mechanism to overcome triplet-triplet annihilation by the Eu complex doped into phosphorescent materials with triplet levels that were higher than singlet levels of the Eu complex. In order to show the feasibility of the proposed energy transfer mechanism and to obtain the optimal ligands and host material, we have calculated the effect depending on ligands as a factor that controls emission intensity in lanthanide complexes. The calculation shows that triplet state as well as singlet state of anion ligand affects on absorption efficiency indirectly.
