  • In order to analyze the effect of the chemical structure and the cetane number of reformed diesel fuels by ultrasonic energy irradiation, proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer$(^1H-NMR)$ was used. From the study, following conclusive remarks can be made. 1) Branch Index(BI), aromatics percentages, and alpha methyl radical$(H_{\alpha})$ of the reformed diesel fuels by ultrasonic energy irradiation decreased more than the conventional ones. 2) All the cetane numbers which were calculated from carbon type structure and hydrogen type distribution of the reformed diesel fuels increased more than the conventional ones. 3) It is more reasonable to predict cetane number equation from carbon type structure than from hydrogen type distribution. 4) BI, aromatics percentages, and $H_{\alpha}$ on both for conventional fuel and reformed diesel fuels by ultrasonic energy irradiation are inversely proportional to cetane number fur these fuels.

  • Neutron reference fields of Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) for calibrating neutron measuring devices to be used in radiation workplace monitoring consist of two kinds of neutron spectra, the direct and the scattered neutron fields, which are produced by using radionuclide neutron sources, 252Cf and 241AmBe sources. Necessary parameters for calibration such as the anisotropy factor of each neutron source and the room-scattered fraction of some neutron surveymeters in the KAERI calibration facility were determined by calculation or measurement. Spectral measurement of scattered neutron fields were performed at each reference calibration point using a Bonner Multi-sphere Spectrometer (BMS) and the dosimetric quantities for calibration also estimated from the neutron energy spectra which were unfolded using the BUNKI code.

  • Background: The moderated neutron calibration fields using $^{241}Am$-Be sources and a graphite moderator have been constructed at the Facility of Radiation Standard (FRS) in the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA). Materials and Methods: The neutron spectra of the fields were evaluated by the Monte-Carlo calculations and measurements using the Bonner Multi-sphere Spectrometer. Results and Discussion: The fields have continuous neutron spectra from several MeV to thermal neutron energy, with fluence-averaged energies of 0.84 MeV and 0.60 MeV. Reference values of fluence rates and ambient/personal dose equivalent rates were determined from neutron spectra by measurements. Conclusion: Currently, the fields are available for calibration or performance test of neutron measuring instruments.

  • In this study, a convenient method for the selective immobilization of single strand DNA (ssDNA) on a polymer surface was described. A positively charged polyelectrolyte, poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA), was spin-coated on a tissue culture petridish and the micropatterns of the PDDA were formed by selective ion implantation through a pattern mask. The surface property of the implanted PDDA was investigated by using a surface profiler and FT-IR spectrometer. Cy3-labeled ssDNA was selectively immobilized on the PDDA patterns through ionic interaction and thus, well-defined ssDNA patterns were obtained.

  • An ion energy spectrometer which has the $45^{\circ}$ parallel electrostatic deflection plate was designed and constructed for measuring ion temperature in high temperature plasma. The energy calibration and the energy resolution were studied in detail for a hydrogen ion at the $0.24{\sim}1.92\;keV$ energy using electrostatic accelerator with a duoplasmatron ion source. The voltage of the deflection plate was linearly increased for the decreased ion detector position at the constant ion energy and decreased for the increased ion energy at the fixed ion detector position. The inclination of the deflection plate voltage to the ion energy was between 0.92 and 1.61, and linearly decreased for the increased the ion detector position. The measured energy resolution, which is $4.2%\;{\sim}\;11.6%$ in this experiment region, was improved for the increased ion dector position and ion energy. The relative efficiency was increased for the decreased the ion detector position. The ion energy spectrum of the DC plasma in the multi-purpose plasma generator was measured using this equipment. The ion temperature was 203-205 eV at the discharge voltage 320 V, discharge current 1.7 A.

  • The rapid quenching dynamics of the F-center excitation by CN- defects in CsCl crystals were investigated by monitoring the ground state bleach recovery kinetics of F-centers, using a picosecond streak camera absorption spectrometer. The F-centers in CN- doped quenched samples show two bleach recovery components. Optical aggregation converts the slow component to the fast component. The slow one is due to the normal relaxation of the F*-centers as found in CN_ free crystals. The fast one is due to the energy transfer of the F-center electronic excitation to the vibrational energy levels of CN_ molecualr defects. The energy transfer occurs only in the F-center-CN_ defect pairs, FH(CN_)-centers.

  • Neutron activation analysis based on $textsc{k}$$_{o}$-standardization method# ($textsc{k}$o-NAA) is Com as one of the most remarkable progresses of the NAA with advantages of experimental simplicity, high accuracy, excellent flexibility with respect to irradiation and counting conditions, and suitability for computerization. This study was carried out to determine the reactor neutron spectrum parameters, i.e. $\alpha$ and f as the main factors of irradiation quality at NAA #1 irradiation hole on HANARO research reactor, to evaluate peak detection efficiency of the gamma-ray spectrometer for the use in the $textsc{k}$$_{o}$ experiments and to compare the measured concentration results with the certified values of some SRMs applying the experimentally determined to-parameters.ers.

  • This work describes the adaptation of extractive scintillation by URAE $X^{TM}$ with a photon-electron rejecting alpha liquid scintillation (PERAL $S^{)}$ spectrometer to the analysis of uranium in aqueous samples. The extraction efficiency of the system was evaluated under varing chemical conditions including pH, and sample-cocktail volume ratio. Isotopic information from the (PERAL $S^{)}$ spectrum of natural uranium was obtained using a curve fitting routine. Comparisons of the result with that obtained from alpha spectrometry method using ion implanted silicon detector showed good agreement.t.

  • Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy was used to investigate the effects of irradiation doses and storage times on three spices. Three imported spices (Brassica juncea, Origanum vulgare, Laurus nobilis) were irradiated with doss of 0, 1, 5 and 10 kGy using a Co-60 irradiator at room temperature. ESR signals were measured from each sample by a Bruker-EPR spectrometer. The gamma-irradiated Brassica and Laurus nobilis exhibited characteristic signals, which were different from those of the non-irradiated ones. Non-irradiated and irradiated Origanum vulgare exhibited single lines, with higher ESR signals in irradiated sample than in non-irradiated sample. The ESR signals increased linearly with increasing irradiation doses $(1{\sim}10kGy)$. A strong positive correlation coefficient $(R^2=0.9939{\sim}0.9993)$ was obtained between the irradiation doses and the corresponding ESR signal intensities. Although the ESR signal intensities decreased with storage time, signals from the three irradiated spices were observed even after 12 weeks of storage at room temperature.

  • keV-neutron capture gamma-ray spectrum of $^{197}Au$(natural gold) sample have been measured in neutron energy range from 10 to 90 keV using the 3-MV pelletron accelerator of the Research Laboratory for Nuclear Reactors at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. Pulsed keV neutrons were produced from the $^7Li(p,n)^7Be$ reaction by bombarding on the $^7Li$ target with the 1.5-ns bunched proton beam. The incident neutron spectrum on the Au sample was measured by a $^6Li$-glass scintillation detector and TOF method. Capture gamma-rays from Au sample were measured by anti-Compton NaI(TI) spectrometer. Five average neutron energy regions were selected to obtain the neutron capture spectrum. Several gamma-ray peaks in the spectrum were found in the present experiment.
