Energy Band Structure, Electronic and Optical properties of Transparent Conducting Nickel Oxide Thin Films on $SiO_2$/Si substrate

  • Nickel Oxide (NiO) is a transition metal oxide of the rock salt structure that has a wide band gap of 3.5 eV. It has a variety of specialized applications due to its excellent chemical stability, optical, electrical and magnetic properties. In this study, we concentrated on the application of NiO thin film for transparent conducting oxide. The energy band structure, electronic and optical properties of Nickel Oxide (NiO) thin films grown on Si by using electron beam evaporation were investigated by X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Reflection Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (REELS), and UV-Spectrometer. The band gap of NiO thin films determined by REELS spectra was 3.53 eV for the primary energies of 1.5 keV. The valence-band offset (VBO) of NiO thin films investigated by XPS was 3.88 eV and the conduction-band offset (CBO) was 1.59 eV. The UV-spectra analysis showed that the optical transmittance of the NiO thin film was 84% in the visible light region within an error of ${\pm}1%$ and the optical band gap for indirect band gap was 3.53 eV which is well agreement with estimated by REELS. The dielectric function was determined using the REELS spectra in conjunction with the Quantitative Analysis of Electron Energy Loss Spectra (QUEELS)-${\varepsilon}({\kappa},{\omega})$-REELS software. The Energy Loss Function (ELF) appeared at 4.8, 8.2, 22.5, 38.6, and 67.0 eV. The results are in good agreement with the previous study [1]. The transmission coefficient of NiO thin films calculated by QUEELS-REELS was 85% in the visible region, we confirmed that the optical transmittance values obtained with UV-Spectrometer is the same as that of estimated from QUEELS-${\varepsilon}({\kappa},{\omega})$-REELS within uncertainty. The inelastic mean free path (IMFP) estimated from QUEELS-${\varepsilon}({\kappa},{\omega})$-REELS is consistent with the IMFP values determined by the Tanuma-Powell Penn (TPP2M) formula [2]. Our results showed that the IMFP of NiO thin films was increased with increasing primary energies. The quantitative analysis of REELS provides us with a straightforward way to determine the electronic and optical properties of transparent thin film materials.

  • 칼슘-벤토나이트와 접한 약 $20\%$의 우라늄 산화물을 함유한 유리고화체가 알곤 분위기에서 모의 화강암지하수에 의해 침출되었을 때 노란색의 우라늄화합물이 벤토나이트와 고화체의 경계면에 농축되었다. 6년간의 침출후 형성된 우라늄 화합물이 beta-uranophane $[Ca(UO_2)_2(SiO_{3}OH)_{2}5H_{2}O]$임을 XRD, 적외선 스펙트럼과 질량분석기를 이용하여 확인하였으며, 이 화합물의 용해도를 $80^{\circ}C$, 탈이온수에서 측정한 결과 약 $10^{-6}\;mole/L$ 이었다.

  • In this study, the characteristics of optical fibers for the application in photocatalytic system was investigated using the intentionally designed accessories for spectrometer and radiometer to resolve the problems associated with the conventional system such as cost and structural restrictions from artificial lamp usage, to broaden the application fields into underground, and to utilize solar light in the future. To do this two kinds of optical fibers, plastic optical fiber (POF) and quartz optical fiber (QOF) were compared in terms of characteristics related with light transmittance and absorption and reactivity in TCE degradation.

  • In this work, we investigated etching characteristics of $HfO_2$ thin film and Si using inductive coupled plasma(ICP) system. The ion energy distribution functions in an ICP system was analyzed by quadrupole mass spectrometer(QMS) with an electrostatic ion energy analyzer. The maximum etch rate of $HfO_2$ thin film is 85.5 nm/min at a $BCl_3/(BCl_3+Ar)$ of 20 % and decreased with further addition of $BCl_3$ gas. From the QMS measurements, the most dominant positive ion energy distributions(IEDS) showed a maximum at 20 % of $BCl_3$. These tendency was very similar to the etch characteristics. This result agreed with the universal energy dependency of ion enhanced chemical etching yields. And the maximum selectivity of $HfO_2$ over Si is 3.05 at a $O_2$ addition of 2 sccm into the $BCl_3/(BCl_3+Ar)$ of 20 % plasma.

  • Inertial impaction type mist eliminators are the most effective instruments to separate mist from the gas. In this work, the effect of the horizontal chevron type mist eliminators is characterized experimentally. Droplet size distribution and evaluation of removal efficiency of the chevron type mist eliminators at different gas flows were investigated using an aerosol particle size analyzer and a portable aerosol spectrometer, respectively. The experimental investigations showed that the mist removal efficiency in these instruments is dependent in the droplet size, and the pressure drop is nil.

  • The outer-most electrons of metal atoms and the remaining valence electrons of any molecular atoms make three-dimensional crystallizing $\pi$-bondings. The rotating electrons on the three-dimensional crystallizing $\pi$-bonding orbitals of atoms make $\pi$-far infrared rays. Longitudinal wave is a propagation of a bundle of $\pi$-far infrared rays, which are produced by a dynamic impact on a solid bar. The $\pi$-far infrared rays make three-dimensional crystallizing $\pi$-bondings in the material, which reproduce the same $\pi$-far infrared rays. If a current signal is input into water molecules under a given electric potential field with $\pi$-far infrared rays (input information), the signal can be amplified because the $\pi$-far infrared rays make the $\pi$-bondings, which reduce electric resistance. The three-dimensional crystallizing $\pi$-bondings can induce normal electrons to move from one orbital to next one with a aid of potential electric field. Quantum Resonance Spectrometer is composed of tesla coil absorbing $\pi$-far infrared rays, tesla coil emitting varying electromagnetic waves signal generator, signal storage, human body amplifier, signal analyzer and data indicator. The absorbing tesla coil making varying magnetic field and downward and upward electric field, which resonates the $\pi$-far infrared rays coming out from specimen and absorbs them. The modulated current signal from the input square signal can generate and emit varying electromagnetic waves from the tesla coil. The varying electro-magnetic waves make the three-dimensional crystallizing $\pi$-bondings and the $\pi$-far infrared rays in the water molecules.

다공성 물질을 이용한 공기용 태양열 집열기의 설계를 위한 이론적 연구 (A Theoretical Study for the Design of Solar Air Heaters Using Porous Material)

  • 본 연구에서는 다공성 물질을 이용한 공기용 태양열 집열기(Solar Air Heater)의 설계를 위한 이론적 해석을 하였다. 해석시 필요한 유리 덮개 및 다공성 매질의 파장에 따른 복사특성을 Visible Spectrometer 및 FT-IR로 측정하였다. 다공성 매질로 15 메쉬의 Stainless Steel Wire Screen을 대상으로 하였다. 열전달 현상은 1차원으로 가정하고, 열복사는 Two-Flux Model을 사용하여, 여러 경우의 유량 및 복사 물성치에 대한 집열기 내부에서의 공기온도 및 다공성 매질의 온도를 계산하여 이에 따른 집열기의 효율 등을 계산하였다. 결과로는 무광택 페인트 코팅이 된 경우가 좋은 복사특성을 보였고, 공기유량이 증가할수록, 알베도(Albedo)는 가시광선 영역에서는 작을수록, 적외선 영역에서는 클수록 집열기의 효율은 증가하였다. 다공성 매질의 두께는 0.001m가 적합함을 보였다. 본 연구에서 이는 광학적 두께(Optical Thickness)가 약 1 정도를 의미한다.

  • 전북 완주 신풍유적 출토 고려시대 슬래그와 송풍관을 대상으로 신풍유적의 야동기술(冶銅技術)성격을 확인하고, 납 원료산지를 추정하기 위해 납동위원소비를 실시하여 알아보았다. 성분분석 결과, Cu-Sn-Pb 삼원계 합금하는 과정에서 비롯된 슬래그와 송풍관으로 해석되었다. 금속현미경과 주사전자현미경(scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometer) 분석결과, 동괴와 주석괴에 방연석을 첨가하여 완제품 제작을 위한 중간소재를 생성하는 합금단계에서 발생한 부산물로 추정된다. 납동위원소비분석 결과, 한국 남부 Zone III 지역의 광산에서 채굴된 방연석을 사용하여 합금한 것으로 판단된다. 송풍관은 송풍관의 외측으로 갈수록 Mullite가 검출되어, 1,000℃ 내외에서 조업이 이뤄졌을 가능성이 있다.

Gamma-ray Full Spectrum Analysis for Environmental Radioactivity by HPGe Detector

  • Odyssey, one of the NASA's Mars exploration program and SELENE (Kaguya), a Japanese lunar orbiting spacecraft have a payload of Gamma-Ray Spectrometer (GRS) for analyzing radioactive chemical elements of the atmosphere and the surface. In these days, gamma-ray spectroscopy with a High-Purity Germanium (HPGe) detector has been widely used for the activity measurements of natural radionuclides contained in the soil of the Earth. The energy spectra obtained by the HPGe detectors have been generally analyzed by means of the Window Analysis (WA) method. In this method, activity concentrations are determined by using the net counts of energy window around individual peaks. Meanwhile, an alternative method, the so-called Full Spectrum Analysis (FSA) method uses count numbers not only from full-absorption peaks but from the contributions of Compton scattering due to gamma-rays. Consequently, while it takes a substantial time to obtain a statistically significant result in the WA method, the FSA method requires a much shorter time to reach the same level of the statistical significance. This study shows the validation results of FSA method. We have compared the concentration of radioactivity of $^{40}K$, $^{232}Th$ and $^{238}U$ in the soil measured by the WA method and the FSA method, respectively. The gamma-ray spectrum of reference materials (RGU and RGTh, KCl) and soil samples were measured by the 120% HPGe detector with cosmic muon veto detector. According to the comparison result of activity concentrations between the FSA and the WA, we could conclude that FSA method is validated against the WA method. This study implies that the FSA method can be used in a harsh measurement environment, such as the gamma-ray measurement in the Moon, in which the level of statistical significance is usually required in a much shorter data acquisition time than the WA method.
