Electricity has become a factor that dramatically affects the market economy. The day-ahead system marginal price determines electricity prices, and system marginal price forecasting is critical in maintaining energy management systems. There have been several studies using mathematics and machine learning models to forecast the system marginal price, but few studies have been conducted to develop, compare, and analyze various machine learning and deep learning models based on a data-driven framework. Therefore, in this study, different machine learning algorithms (i.e., autoregressive-based models such as the autoregressive integrated moving average model) and deep learning networks (i.e., recurrent neural network-based models such as the long short-term memory and gated recurrent unit model) are considered and integrated evaluation metrics including a forecasting test and information criteria are proposed to discern the optimal forecasting model. A case study of South Korea using long-term time-series system marginal price data from 2016 to 2021 was applied to the developed framework. The results of the study indicate that the autoregressive integrated moving average model (R-squared score: 0.97) and the gated recurrent unit model (R-squared score: 0.94) are appropriate for system marginal price forecasting. This study is expected to contribute significantly to energy management systems and the suggested framework can be explicitly applied for renewable energy networks.
In new deregulated electricity market, short-term price forecasting is key information for all market players. A better forecast of market-clearing price (MCP) helps market participants to strategically set up their bidding strategies for energy markets in the short-term. This paper presents a new prediction strategy to improve the need for more accurate short-term price forecasting tool at spot market using an artificial neural networks (ANNs). To build the forecasting ANN model, a three-layered feedforward neural network trained by the improved Levenberg-marquardt (LM) algorithm is used to forecast the locational marginal prices (LMPs). To accurately predict LMPs, actual power generation and load are considered as the input sets, and then the difference is used to predict price differences in the spot market. The proposed ANN model generalizes the relationship between the LMP in each area and the unconstrained MCP during the same period of time. The LMP calculation is iterated so that the capacity between the areas is maximized and the mechanism itself helps to relieve grid congestion. The addition of flow between the areas gives the LMPs a new equilibrium point, which is balanced when taking the transfer capacity into account, LMP forecasting is then possible. The proposed forecasting strategy is tested on the spot market of the Nord Pool. The validity, the efficiency, and effectiveness of the proposed approach are shown by comparing with time-series models

Forecasting prices in electricity markets is critical for consumers and producers in planning their operations and managing their price risk. We utilize the generalized autoregressive conditionally heteroskedastic (GARCH) method to forecast the electricity prices in two regions of New York: New York City and Central New York State. We contrast the one-day forecasts of the GARCH against techniques such as dynamic regression, transfer function models, and exponential smoothing. We also examine the effect on our forecasting of omitting some of the extreme values in the electricity prices. We show that accounting for the extreme values and the heteroskedactic variance in the electricity price time-series can significantly improve the accuracy of the forecasting. Additionally, we document the higher volatility in New York City electricity prices. Differences in volatility between regions are important in the pricing of electricity options and for analyzing market performance.

This paper presents a method for forecasting future uranium prices that is used as input data to calculate the uranium cost, which is a rational key cost driver of the nuclear fuel cycle cost. In other words, the statistical autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model and existing engineering cost estimation method, the so-called escalation rate model, were subjected to a comparative analysis. When the uranium price was forecasted in 2015, the margin of error of the ARIMA model forecasting was calculated and found to be 5.4%, whereas the escalation rate model was found to have a margin of error of 7.32%. Thus, it was verified that the ARIMA model is more suitable than the escalation rate model at decreasing uncertainty in nuclear fuel cycle cost calculation.
This paper presents an hour-ahead System Marginal Price (SMP) forecasting framework based on a neural network. Recently, the deregulation in power industries has impacted on the power system operational problems. The bidding strategy of market participants in energy market is highly dependent on the short-term price levels. Therefore, short-term SMP forecasting is a very important issue to market participants to maximize their profits. and to market operator who may wish to operate the electricity market in a stable sense. The proposed hybrid neural network is composed of tow parts. First part of this scheme is pattern classification to input data using Kohonen Self-Organizing Map (SOM) and the second part is SMP forecasting using back-propagation neural network that has three layers. This paper compares the forecasting results using classified input data and unclassified input data. The proposed technique is trained, validated and tested with historical date of Korea Power Exchange (KPX) in 2002.

Electric power restructuring offers a major change to the vertically integrated utility monopoly. Deregulation has had a great impact on the electric power industry in various countries. Bidding competition is one of the main transaction approaches after deregulation. The energy trading levels between market participants is largely dependent on the short-term price forecasts. This paper presents the short-term System Marginal Price (SMP) forecasting implementation using backpropagation Neural Network in competitive electricity market. Demand and SMP that supplied from Korea Power Exchange (KPX) are used by a input data and then predict SMP. It needs to analysis the input data for accurate prediction.

Predicting accurate electricity prices is an important task in the electricity trading market. To address the electricity price forecasting problem, various approaches have been proposed so far and it is known that linear regression-based approaches are the best. However, the use of such linear regression-based methods is limited due to low accuracy and performance. In traditional linear regression methods, it is not practical to find a nonlinear regression model that explains the training data well. If the training data is complex (i.e., small-sized individual data and large-sized features), it is difficult to find the polynomial function with n terms as the model that fits to the training data. On the other hand, as a linear regression model approximating a nonlinear regression model is used, the accuracy of the model drops considerably because it does not accurately reflect the characteristics of the training data. To cope with this problem, we propose a new electricity price forecasting method that divides the entire dataset to multiple split datasets and find the best linear regression models, each of which is the optimal model in each dataset. Meanwhile, to improve the performance of the proposed method, we modify the proposed localized linear regression method in the map and reduce way that is a framework for parallel processing data stored in a Hadoop distributed file system. Our experimental results show that the proposed model outperforms the existing linear regression model. Specifically, the accuracy of the proposed method is improved by 45% and the performance is faster 5 times than the existing linear regression-based model.

This paper presents a generalized fuel choice model in which restrictive constraints on cross-price coefficients as Baughman-Joskow-FEA Logit Model need not be imposed, but all demand elasticities are uniquely determined. The model is applied to estimating aggregate energy demand and fuel choices for the residential and commercial sector. The structural equations are estimated by a generalized least squares procedure using national-level EPB, KDI, BK, KRIS, MOER data for 1965 and 1980, and other related reports. The econometric results support the argument that “third-price” and “fourth-price” coefficients should not be constrained in estimating relative market share models. Furthermore, by using this fuel choice model, it has forecasted energy demands by fuel sources in, the residential and commercial sector until 1991. The results are turned out good estimates to compare with existing demands forecasted from other institutes.
This paper attempts to estimate the residential electricity demand function, using survey data of 521 households in Korea. As the residential electricity demand function provides us information on the pattern of consumer's electricity consumption, it can be usefully utilized in predicting the impact of policy variables such as electricity price and forecasting electricity demands. We apply least absolute deviation(LAD) estimation as a robust approach to estimating parameters. The results showed that price and income elasticities are -0.68 and 0.14 respectively, and statistically significant at the 10% levels. The price and income elasticities portray that residential electricity is price- and income-inelastic. This implies that the residential electricity is indispensable goods to human-being's life, thus the residential electricity demand would not be promptly adjusted to responding to price and/or income change.
The situation of the global food markets has been being rapidly restructured and entering on a new phase by new dynamic and driving forces. The factors such as economic growth and income increase, high energy price, globalization, urbanization, and global climate change are transforming patterns of food consumption, production, and markets. The prices and markets of world food and energy are getting increasingly linked each other. Food and fuel are the global dilemma issues associated with the risk of diverting farmland or of consuming cereals for biofuel production in detriment of the cereals supply to the global food markets. An estimated 100 million tons of grain per year are being redirected from food to fuel. Therefore, the objectives of this study are as follows: Firstly, the study examines situations of the world food and energy resources, analyzes the trends of prices of the crude oil and biofuel, and formulates the food-energy links mechanism. Secondly, the study builds a simulation model, based on system dynamics approach, for not only analyzing the global cereals market and energy market but also forecasting the global production, consumption, and stock of those markets by 2030 in the future. The model of this study consists of four sectors, i.e., world population dynamics sector, global food market dynamics sector, global energy market dynamics sector, scenario sector of world economic growth and oil price.
