The world population is consuming more than 1/3 of the total energy for heating housings. Particularly in our country, 21% of the consumption energy is occupied by building section. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the energy efficiency in buildings, thus promoting a comfortable residential environment while minimizing energy consumption. Accordingly, this study presents considerations for implementing high-insulated and airtight passive houses. This study selected four houses with passive house design applied, performed building energy performance through PHPP2007, a German passive house design simulation program, and compared the building-specific heat loss and heat gain. As a result, the most vulnerable part to heat loss was turned out to be a window and the heat loss was caused by outer wall, roof, and ventilation. Accordingly, for the implementation of passive house, it is necessary to make a careful plan and airtight construction that are complementary to various parts through the energy performance analysis started from the design phase.
The building energy performance indicator, called Energy Performance Index (EPI), has been used for the past decades in South Korea. It has a list of design variables assigned with weighting factors (a, b). Unfortunately, the current EPI method is not performance-based but very close to a prescriptive rating. With this in mind, this study aims to propose a new performance-based EPI method. For this purpose, a global sensitivity analysis method, Sobol, is employed. The Sobol method is suitable for complex nonlinear models and can decompose all the output variance due to every input. The Sobol sensitivity index of each variable is defined as 0 to 1 (0 to 100%), and the sum of all sensitivity indices is equal to 1 (100%). In this study, an office building was modeled using EnergyPlus and then the Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS) was conducted to generate a surrogate model to EnergyPlus. The sensitivity index was suggested to replace weight (a) in the existing EPI. In addition, the discrete weight (b) in the existing EPI was replaced by a set of continuous regression functions. Due to the introduction of the sensitivity index and the continuous regression functions, the new proposed approach can provide far more accurate outcome than the existing EPI (R2: 0.83 vs. R2: 0.01 for cooling, R2: 0.66 vs. R2: 0.01 for total energy). The new proposed approach proves to be more rational, objective and performance-based than the existing EPI method.
Ground source heat pump systems (GSHP) can achieve higher performance of the system, by supplying more efficient heat source to the heat pump, than the conventional air-source heat pump system. But building clients and designers have hesitated to use GSHP systems, due to expensive initial cost, and uncertain economic feasibility. In order to reduce the initial cost, many researches have focused on the energy-pile system, using the structure of the building as a heat exchanger. Even though several experimental studies for the energy-pile system have been conducted, there was not enough data of quantitative evaluation with economic analysis and comprehensive analysis for the energy-pile. In this study, a prediction method has been developed for the energy pile system with barrette pile, using the ground heat transfer model and ground heat exchanger model. Moreover, a feasibility study for the energy pile system with barrette pile was conducted, by performance analysis and LCC assessment. As a result, it was found that the heat exchange rate of a barrette pile was 2.55 kW, and the payback period using LCC analysis was 8.8 years.
The distribution performance of refrigerant distributors in air conditioner evaporators was examined numerically and experimentally. Internal flow analysis of the distributor by CFD found that the distance from the socket to the cone, the angle of the cone and the base area of the cone were the most important factors affecting refrigerant distribution ability and vortex creation. To enhance distribution performance, two distributors with improved internal structures were designed. To test these new structures, distribution performance was also analyzed by CFD and an empirical experiment was carried out using the water-nitrogen. Experimental results on the distribution fraction of each distributor hole showed a good agreement with the results of the CFD analysis. Thus, the new design of the distributors enhanced distribution performance of the refrigerant distributors.
Currently the country's foreign energy dependence reaches approximately 97% and the total energy consumption percentage of buildings(commercial and domestic parts) reaches approximately 24%. Building energy saving by enhanced insulation will be very important issue. Therefore, the solution is required to reduce energy loss and increasing displeasure caused by excessive influx of solar energy through windows, to solve the problems like decoloration on indoor furniture an clothes by harmful ultraviolet rays, air conditioning and increased cost. This research used for commercialization and ills semination by basic information through a evaluation on insulation performance of the window of high efficiency energy equipment which can improve the insulation performance.
Fuel cell systems offer high energy efficiencies for transportation application. In addition, they can use alcohols and alternative fuels as the fuel, while producing little or no noxious emissions. Fuel cell-powered energy source should be competitive in performance characteristics and in capital and maintenance costs with internal combustion engine systems. From computer simulation program, battery and fuel cell energy output and total power profile, motor power, battery energy output, fuel cell energy output. It simulates the performance of fuelcell/battery powered energy source operation over any user inputted transit route cycle, and provides performance criteria through user specifications for preliminary design consideration.
Recently, the technologies to utilize the cold energy of liquefied natural gas (LNG) have attracted significant attention. In this paper, thermodynamic performance analysis of combined cycles consisting of ammonia Rankine cycle (AWR) and organic Rankine cycle (ORC) with LNG Rankine cycle to recover low-grade heat source and the cold energy of LNG. The mathematical models are developed and the effects of the important system parameters such as turbine inlet pressure, ammonia mass fraction, working fluid on the system performance are systematically investigated. The results show that the thermal efficiency of AWR-LNG cycle is higher but the total power production of ORC-LNG cycle is higher.
The purpose of this study is to improve of energy performance in school buildings. Many building renovations have mainly focused on commercial buildings and houses, but school buildings have no attention in this field although there are many buildings that show degraded energy performance and there are many old fashioned buildings which need renovation. This study was carried out through the survey, field study, energy simulation and life cycle cost analysis. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: In model building, large amount of heat were lost at the building envelope, such as non-insulated skins, window-sills and window-frame joints. According to the simulation result, about 15% of heating energy is saved by the insulating works compared to pre-renovation condition. Also, LCC analysis revealed to be more effective to select a exteria wall insulation such as a dryvit system.
BIPV/T (Building Intergrated PhotoVoltaic/Thermal) is combined system produces electricity and thermal energy. The heat from PV modules should be removed for better electrical performance, and can be converted into useful thermal energy. The efficiency of the PV system's performance will raise by the system removes heat from the PV. The test system is installed to top floor of the experimental house in the KEPCO Research Institute. The planned experiment is following. (1) Supplying heat energy to top floor. (2) Supplying heat and cool energy to thermal storage in the bottom of the top floor. (3) Supplying heat energy to EHP for improved performance. The experimental performance is executed from 13th February to 13th March, 2012. The solar generation of electricity is 4.04kWh under the horizontal solar radiation is $1000W/m^2$ and the air temperature is $25^{\circ}C$.
Because international environmental and energy problems such as global warming and ozone depletion, exhausting of fossil energy sources are more serious than before, renewable energy system is attracting people's attention more and more. Organic waste bioenergy system among a variety of renewable energy system is expected to have an effect on building a society which is eco-friendly and recycles resources owing to carbon neutral effects. So this is considered as the role of an energy source of the building. Previous studies on the organic waste bioenergy are mainly bioenergy technology and activation plan of the bioenergy supply. But the performance evaluation studies of bioenergy systems installed in buildings are rarely. This study is to evaluate applicability of the organic waste bioenergy system as the building energy supply system by energy and environmental, economical analysis.
