  • The main objective of this study is to predict the wind power generation at the wind farm using various wake models. Modeling of wind farm is a prerequisite for prediction of annual energy production at the wind farm. In this study, we modeled 20 MW class Seongsan wind farm which has 10 wind turbines located at the eastern part of Jeju Island. WindSim based on the computational fluid dynamics was adopted for the estimation of power generation. The power curve and thrust coefficient with meteorology file were prepared for wind farm modelling. The meteorology file was produced based on the measured data of the Korea Wind Atlas provided by Korea Institute of Energy Research. Three types of wake models such as Jensen, Larsen, and Ishihara et al. wake models were applied to investigate the wake effects. From the result, Jensen and Ishihara wake models show nearly the same value of power generation whereas the Larsen wake model shows the largest value. New positions of wind turbines are proposed to reduce the wake loss, and to increase the annual energy production of the wind farm.

  • In this paper, the mooring system for a floating wave energy farm is designed based on a two-dimensional analysis. The mooring system uses an anchorless mooring line linking two floaters in a floating wave energy farm. The basic equation to determine the length of the mooring line between the two floaters is proposed. The other properties such as the diameter and pretension are taken from the mooring line for a single floater. The dynamic behavior and safety of the designed mooring system under extreme ocean conditions are analyzed with the commercial software Orcaflex. A numerical study shows the stability and high safety in tension of the designed mooring lines for a floating wave energy farm. The proposed anchorless mooring system for a floating wave energy farm results in a considerable reduction in the length of the mooring line, contributing to the economics of a floating wave energy farm.

  • The investigation on wind farm design using CFD technique was carried out to reduce turbulence intensity in a wind farm. A potential wind farm in Gasiri of Jeju Island was selected for the design and the commercial S/W of Meteodyn WT was used for applying CFD technique. The initial layout of wind turbines was derived using WindPRO which is mainly used for wind farm design in Korea. Then, the distribution of turbulence intensity on complex terrain was calculated and visible by Meteodyn WT. Based on the distribution, wind turbines were positioned properly. As a result, wind turbines could be deployed at positions with minimum turbulence intensity as well as maximum Annual Energy Production, AEP, using Meteodyn WT. It is necessary to take into account turbulence intensity in wind farm design to avoid wind turbine failure.

  • The proposed offshore wind farm projects, i.e., Mooudo offshore, Yeonggwang-Gochang offshore, Saemangeum offshore, Imjado offshore and Gadeokdo-Dadeapo offshore, were compared and analyzed using the Korea National Wind Mapand Wind Farm Suitability Assessment System developed by the Korea Institute of Energy Research. The suitability of the proposed areas was comprehensively assessed using geographic, economic constraints, wave condition and wind resource factors, but the focus of this paper was on the geographic constraints and wave conditions. Imjado had several geographical constraints, despite having a good wind power density, while Saemangeum had a relatively low wave height, shallow water depth, close substation and slow tidal current. It is anticipating that the present comparison and analysis could be used as reference guidelines when selecting and preparing the design of large-scale offshore wind farm in the near future.

  • The performance test of a wind turbine in a wind farm is generally carried out by the owner to verify the power curve of the wind turbine given by the turbine manufacturer. The international electro-technical commission provides the IEC 61400-12-1 standard on "Power performance measurements of electricity producing wind turbines". By using this code, one can easily find the suitable met-mast (meteorological mast) location for the wind data whether a wind farm is potential or already built. In this paper, the valid sectors for wind turbines installed in the HanKyoung wind farm, south-west in Jeju island are analyzed on the basis of the code by considering the wind farm layout. Among these sectors, the optimal met-mast location is presented for the power curve verification of the wind farm.

  • This paper presents the method for the fluctuation smoothing control by using relaxation time variable control of battery. When the output power of wind farm is changed suddenly, it is necessary to control the output power of wind farm. The smoothing relaxation time is changed within limits of battery output power. Using the hybrid energy storage system (HESS) combined with battery energy storage system and electric double layer capacitor, it is possible to control the output power of wind farm. The capacity of battery is determined by considering the case of the disconnecting wind farm from the grid. To verify the proposed method, simulations are carried out by using PSCAD/EMTDC with actual data of wind farm in the Jeju Island.

  • A feasibility study to estimate annual energy production of an offshore wind farm was performed using MERRA reanalysis data. Two well known commercial codes commonly used to wind farm design and power prediction were used. Three years of MERRA data were used to predict annual energy predictions of the offshore wind farm close to Copenhagen from 2011 to 2013. The availability of the wind farm was calculated from the power output data available online. It was found from the study that the MERRA reanalysis data with commercial codes could be used to fairly accurately predict the annual energy production from offshore wind farms when a meteorological mast is not available.

  • This paper reveals both the operational situation and the cause of the error occurred in wind turbine generator system of Hangwon wind farm in Jeju island. The four wind turbines were selected for this work, and the monitored period was for six months. Wind resource in the wind farm was analyzed, and the estimated energy production was compared with the actual energy production. As a result, with a decrease of system error, the estimated energy production was in good agreement with the actual energy production. The errors occurring in components such as gearbox and hydraulic motor affected the Availability of the wind turbine. Also, poor external conditions such as a strong wind, lightning and gust caused a standstill of wind turbines.

  • In order to examine how accurately the wind farm design software, WindPRO and Meteodyn WT, predict annual energy production (AEP), an investigation was carried out for Seongsan wind farm of Jeju Island. The one-year wind data was measured from wind sensors on met masts of Susan and Sumang which are 2.3 km, and 18 km away from Seongsan wind farm, respectively. MERRA (Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications) reanalysis data was also analyzed for the same period of time. The real AEP data came from SCADA system of Seongsan wind farm, which was compare with AEP data predicted by WindPRO and Meteodyn WT. As a result, AEP predicted by Meteodyn WT was lower than that by WindPRO. The analysis of using wind data from met masts led to the conclusion that AEP prediction by CFD software, Meteodyn WT, is not always more accurate than that by linear program software, WindPRO. However, when MERRA reanalysis data was used, Meteodyn WT predicted AEP more accurately than WindPRO.

  • A case study for the design of a wind farm in complex terrain was carried out using the wind farm site analysis software OpenWind, which has an open-source platform and is free to use. The Youngdeok Wind Farm, constructed on mountainous terrain in Korea, was chosen as a model site; the design process reproduced using OpenWind. A comparison of the positions of the wind turbine derived from the OpenWind optimization process and the current positions were in good agreement. The annual energy production predicted by OpenWind compared with the prediction by the micrositing software, WindSim, were also validated to within 1%. Therefore, it was confirmed that OpenWind can be used for a practical wind farm design project. It is also anticipating that this paper will provide a prototype process for the design of a wind farm site and offer a database for the post-evaluation of a constructed wind farm in Korea.
