  • Energy efficiency of resource-constrained wireless sensor networks is critical in applications such as real-time monitoring/surveillance. To improve the energy efficiency and reduce the energy consumption, the time series data can be compressed before transmission. However, most of the compression algorithms for time series data were developed only for single variate scenarios, while in practice there are often multiple sensor nodes in one application and the collected data is actually multivariate time series. In this paper, we propose to compress the time series data by the Lasso (least absolute shrinkage and selection operator) approximation. We show that, our approach can be naturally extended for compressing the multivariate time series data. Our extension is novel since it constructs an optimal projection of the original multivariates where the best energy efficiency can be realized. The two algorithms are named by ULasso (Univariate Lasso) and MLasso (Multivariate Lasso), for which we also provide practical guidance for parameter selection. Finally, empirically evaluation is implemented with several publicly available real-world data sets from different application domains. We quantify the algorithm performance by measuring the approximation error, compression ratio, and computation complexity. The results show that ULasso and MLasso are superior to or at least equivalent to compression performance of LTC and PLAMlis. Particularly, MLasso can significantly reduce the smooth multivariate time series data, without breaking the major trends and important changes of the sensor network system.

  • The international community is paying close attention to the climatic changes caused by the meteorological anomalies. In response to such phenomena, after the adoption of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 1992, efforts to actively respond to the meteorological changes are proliferating all over the world; even in the Republic of Korea, the issue to tackle the meteorological changes has emerged as a top-priority national agenda. In the year of 2008, after the declaration of the low-carbon, green-growth paradigm by the government, the UNFCCC COP15 has announced a 30% reduction target of the emission of the greenhouse gases by 2020 as compared to the "Business As Usual, BAU" and has also confirmed, as a commitment plan to achieve reduction in the emission of greenhouse gases, the reduction target of greenhouse gases for all sectors, industries and years. (26.9% for buildings) Since the construction of the new apartment houses in the year of 2001, the "Building Energy Efficiency Rating", has been applied to newly constructed building complexes, built in 2010; the accumulated emission reduction has been evaluated at around 450,000toe and the accumulated carbon dioxide emission reduction is at $826,000tCO_2$ And through the prediction of these values under various scenarios (New construction, new construction / expansion of existing uses, when transferred to 1stgrade), the effects on the degree of reduction of greenhouse gases by the increased certification of the Building Energy Efficiency Rating are an alyzed and it is our aim to express the importance of the certification system capable of carrying out a quantitative evaluation of the building energy in order to establish the strategy to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide.

  • A pilot plant (Q=5 $m^3/d$) study was implemented for small and medium sized personal wastewater treatment plant effluent to evaluate MBR and A/O processes utilizing self-sufficient energy composed of wind and solar energy. The removal efficiencies of BOD, SS, turbidity and color were sufficient for legal water quality standards for gray water. However, those of nitrogen and phosphorus could not meet legal regulations which suggested that further removal of those contaminants were needed for reuse of the treated water. Self-sufficient energy rate was 100 % for the pilot plant due to excessive design capacity. In this research, wind and solar energy system was applied considering geological characteristics, which significantly improved energy self-sufficiency. Substantial improvement on energy self-sufficiency can be obtained by optimized investment and operation at a full scale wastewater treatment plant.

  • The electricity conversion-efficiency of solar cell for commercial application is about 6-15%. More than 85% of the incoming solar energy is either reflected or absorbed as heat energy. Consequently, the working temperature of the photovoltaic cells increases considerably after prolonged operations and the cell's efficiency drops significantly. PV/T refers to the integration of a PV module and a solar thermal collector in a single piece of equipment. By cooling the PV module with a fluid steam like air or water, the electricity yield can be improved. At the same time, the heat pick-up by the fluid can be to support space heating or service hot-water systems. In this study, a pulsating heat pipe solar heat collector was combined with single-crystal silicon photovoltaic cell in hybrid energy-generating unit that simultaneously produced low temperature heat and heat and electricity. This experiment was investigating thermal and electrical efficiency for evaluation of a PV/T system.

  • Plenty of efforts have been made in the traditional architecture of Korea, Hanok, to develop various elements such as restoration, the introduction of new design, and energy-saving while systemic setups on standard and evaluation of eco-friendly energy design of Hanok are lacking. If we evaluate energy performance based on current standards without reflecting unique features of Hanok on the system, Hanok will be included in the very low grade among the residential buildings being included in the approval system of eco-friendly architecture or the unique features will be modified and the burden of increased construction cost. Therefore, this study is to prepare the basic reference for the introductory evaluation system by evaluating the energy performance level of NEO-Hanok based on the current building energy rating system. The result for NEO-Hanok based on the building energy rating system, we propose the rating standard with scorecard elements of NEO-Hanok by considering the necessity of identity and standard for NEO-Hanok. As a result of infiltration test to check the tightness, it was measured as 10.81 times/h (50 ACH). As we switch from the main insulation for the wall from the glass wool 64k(0.035W/mk) to rigid polyurethane foam first class first unit (0.024W/mk), the result was slightly increased from the first demand quantity rating yield $249.8kWh/m^2{\cdot}yr$ to $235.0kWh/m^2{\cdot}yr$. Current certificate system is focused more on the heating load than the cooling load, it is disadvantageous for Hanok, which has less cooling energy consumption in summer. The rating result from the target building study is level 4.

  • This paper proposed the calculation method of the generation operating avoided cost to cost-effectiveness evaluation of energy conservation programs that compounded the Proxy Plant Method and Load Decrement Method. This method introduced an operating index of the Energy Efficiency Demand-Side Management (EEDSM) resources based on the end-user's behaviors on the electricity power usage. The operation index is applied to calculate the hourly operating capacity of diffused high-efficiency appliances. And the operating capacity on the peak load hours for reference load is computed through the reduction of the peak load that contributes to that hour. Also, the proposed method evaluated the effect of EEDSM resources. The IEEE-RTS is adopted as a sample system to analyze impacts of an EEDSM. This paper, we have analyzed the effect of EEDSM upon the changes in the generation of generator, generation cost and the system marginal price (SMP). This method can be used to evaluate the impact of the diffused DSM resource and to estimate the impact in short-term EEDSM program. Further, result of the calculation can be utilized to pabulum for effect analysis of EEDSM resources.
