  • Among the various elements of probabilistic safety assessment (PSA), human failure events (HFEs) and their dependencies are major contributors to the quantification of risk of a nuclear power plant. Currently, the dependency among HFEs is reflected using a post-processing method in PSA, wherein several drawbacks, such as limited propagation of minimal cutsets through the fault tree and improper truncation of minimal cutsets exist. In this paper, we propose a method to model the HFE dependency directly in a fault tree using the if-then-else logic. The proposed method proved to be equivalent to the conventional post-processing method while addressing the drawbacks of the latter. We also developed a software tool to facilitate the implementation of the proposed method considering the need for modeling the dependency between multiple HFEs. We applied the proposed method to a specific case to demonstrate the drawbacks of the conventional post-processing method and the advantages of the proposed method. When applied appropriately under specific conditions, the direct fault-tree modeling of HFE dependency enhances the accuracy of the risk quantification and facilitates the analysis of minimal cutsets.

  • The most concerning issue of these days is the energy crisis by increasing threat of dependency on foreign oil and its volatility itself. In the situations, the PHEV is drawing attention for the next generation's car which could give a chance to decrease the dependency on foreign oil. As well as, the Korean electric power infrastructure is a strategic national asset that is under utilized most of the time. With the proper changes in the operational paradigm, it could generate and deliver necessary energy to charge the PHEVs which could penetrate the market within few years. In doing so, it would reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve the economics of the electricity industry, and reduce the energy dependency. This paper investigate the technical potential and impacts of using the existing idle capacity of the electric infrastructure in conjunction with the emerging PHEVs technology to meet the majority of daily energy needs of the Korean LDV fleet.

  • This paper focuses on the mesh-size dependency in numerical simulations of reinforced concrete (RC) structures subjected to blast loading. A tensile failure criterion that can minimize the mesh-dependency of simulation results is introduced based on the fracture energy theory. In addition, conventional plasticity based damage models for concrete such as the CSC model and the HJC model, which are widely used for blast analyses of concrete structures, are compared with the orthotropic model that adopts the introduced tensile failure criterion in blast tests to verify the proposed criterion. The numerical predictions of the time-displacement relations at the mid-span of RC beams subjected to blast loading are compared with experimental results. The analytical results show that the numerical error according to the change in the finite element mesh size is substantially reduced and the accuracy of the numerical results is improved by applying a unique failure strain value determined by the proposed criterion.

  • This paper investigates the dependency of the critical content for electrical conductivity of carbon powder-filled polymer matrix composites with different matrixes as a function of the carbon powder content (volume fraction) to find the break point of the relationships between the carbon powder content and the electrical conductivity. The electrical conductivity jumps by as much as ten orders of magnitude at the break point. The critical carbon powder content corresponding to the break point in electrical conductivity varies according to the matrix species and tends to increase with an increase in the surface tension of the matrix. In order to explain the dependency of the critical carbon content on the matrix species, a simple equation (${V_c}^*=[1+ 3({{\gamma}_c}^{1/2}-{{\gamma}_m}^{1/2})^2/({\Delta}q_cR]^{-1}$) was derived under some assumptions, the most important of which was that when the interfacial excess energy introduced by particles of carbon powder into the matrix reaches a universal value (${\Delta}q_c$), the particles of carbon powder begin to coagulate so as to avoid any further increase in the energy and to form networks that facilitate electrical conduction. The equation well explains the dependency through surface tension, surface tensions between the particles of carbon powder.

  • To investigate the flow-accelerated corrosion (FAC) dependency of carbon steel (A106 Gr. B) and low-alloy steels (1Cr-1/2Mo, 21/4Cr-1Mo) on pH, orifice distance, and material, experiments were carried out. These experiments were performed using a flow velocity of 4 m/sec (partly 9 m/sec) at pH $8.0\~10.0$ in an oxygen-free aqueous solution re-circulated in an Erosion-Corrosion Test Loop at $130^{\circ}\;{\ldots}$ for 500 hours. The weight loss of the carbon steel specimens appeared to be positively dependent on the flow velocity. That of the carbon and low-alloy steel specimens also showed to be distinguishably dependent on the pH. At pH levels of $8.0\~9.5$ it decreased, but increased from 9.5 to 10.0. Utility water chemistry personnel should carefully consider this kind of pH dependency to control the water system pH to mitigate FAC of the piping system material. The weight loss of the specimens located further from the orifice in the distance range of $6.8\~27.2$ mm was shown to be greater, except for 21/4Cr-1Mo, which showed no orifice distance dependency. Low alloy steel specimens exhibited a factor of two times better resistance to FAC than that of the carbon steel. Based on this kind of FAC dependency of the carbon and low-alloy steels on the orifice distance and material, we conclude that it is necessary to alternate the composition of the secondary piping system material of NPPs, using low-alloy steels, such as 21/4Cr-1Mo, particularly when the system piping has to be replaced.

  • The DVS(Dynamic Voltage Scaling) technique is the method to reduce the dynamic energy consumption. As using slack times, it extends the execution time of the big load operations by changing the frequency and the voltage of variable voltage processors. Researches, that controlling the energy consumption of the processors and the data transmission among processors by controlling the bandwidth to reduce the energy consumption of the entire system, have been going on. Since operations in multiprocessor systems have the data dependency between processors, however, the DVS techniques devised for single processors are not suitable to improve the energy efficiency of multiprocessor systems. We propose the new scheduling algorithm based on DVS for increasing energy efficiency of multiprocessor systems. The proposed DVS algorithm can improve the energy efficiency of the entire system because it controls frequency and voltages having the data dependency among processors.

  • As intensity modulated radiation therapy compared with conventional radiation therapy, tumor target dose increased and normal tissues and critical organs dose reduced. In brain tumor, treatment planning of intensity modulated radiation therapy was practiced in 4MV, 6MV, 15MV X-ray energy. In these X-ray energy, was considered the dose distribution and dose volume histogram. As 4MV X-ray compared with 6MV and 15MV, maximum dose of right optic-nerve increased 10.1 %, 8.4%. Right eye increased 5.2%, 2.7%. And left optic-nerve, left eye, optic chiasm and brainstem incrased 1.7% - 5.2%. Even though maximum dose of PTV and these critical organs show different from 1.7% - 10.1% according to X-ray energies, these are a piont dose. Therefore in brain tumor, treatment planning of intensity modulated radiation therapy in 9 treatment field showed no relation with energy dependency.

  • In this paper, the dependency of energy efficiency on the walking/running pattern and the walking/running period is analyzed though simulations of walk, trot and gallop. A quadruped animal has its own original features in the walking pattern and the walking period for adaptation to the environment. The robot model used in the simulations has three active joints and one passive spring-loaded joint at each leg, which is based on the actual quadruped robot, HUNTER (Hanyang UNiversity TEtrapod Robot), developed in the lab. Also included is the dependency of energy efficiency on the walking period in trot.

  • A new approach to the logical design of 4NF database shceme, which can be easily automated, is proposed. The main features of the approach are : introduction of a single attribute right hand side, extension of the concept of independent relations, semantic analysis, and adaoption of dependency matrix. The underlying viewpoints of functional relationships of the approach are different from Fagin's in that we distinguish functional and multivalued dependency in terms of cardinality. An algorithm for automatic generation of fourth normal form is presented and implemented.
