We propose a scaled-down experimental model of vertical air-natural convection channels by applying the modified Ishii-Kataoka scaling method with the assistance of numerical analyses to the Reactor Vault Cooling System (RVCS) of the Proto-type Gen-IV Sodium-cooled fast reactor (PGSFR) being developed in Korea. Two major non-dimensional numbers (modified Richardson and Friction number) from the momentum equation and Stanton number from the energy balance equation were identified to design the scaled-down experimental model to assimilate thermal-hydraulic behaviors of the natural convective air-cooling channel of RVCS. The ratios of the design parameters in the PGSFR RVCS between the prototype and the scaled-down model were determined by setting Richardson and Stanton number to be unity. The friction number which cannot be determined by the Ishii-Kataoka method was estimated by numerical analyses using the MARS-KS system code. The numerical analyses showed that the friction number with the form loss coefficient of 2.0 in the scale-down model would result in an acceptable prediction of the thermal-hydraulic behavior in RVCS. We also performed experimental benchmarking using the scaled-down model with the MARS-KS simulations to verify the appropriateness of the scale-down model, which demonstrated that the temperature rises and the average air flow velocity measured in the scale-down model.

This work reports a set of approximate analytical solutions describing the initial transient process of close-contact melting between a rectangular parallelepiped solid and a flat plate on which either constant temperature or constant heat flux is imposed. Not only relative motion of the solid block tangential to the heating plate, but also the density difference between the solid and liquid phase is incorporated in the model. The thin film approximation reduces the force balance between the solid weight and liquid pressure, and the energy balance at the melting front into a simultaneous ordinary differential equation system. The normalized model equations admit compactly expressed analytical solutions which include the already approved two-dimensional solutions as a subset. In particular, the normalized liquid film thickness is independent of all pertinent parameters, thereby facilitating to define the transition period of close-contact melting. A unique behavior of the solid descending velocity due to the density difference is also resolved by the present solution. A new geometric function which alone represents the three-dimensional effect is introduced, and its properties are clarified. One of the representative results is that heat transfer is at least enhanced at the expense of the increase in friction as the cross-sectional shape deviates from the square under the same contact area.

A mathematical model has been developed for predicting kinematic, thermal, and solidification histories of atomized droplets during flight. Liquid droplet convective cooling, recalescence, equilibrium-state solidification, and solid-phase cooling were taken into account in the analysis of the solidification process. The spherical shell model was adopted where the heterogeneous nucleation is initiated from the whole surface of a droplet. The growth rate of the solid-liquid interface was determined from the theory of crystal growth kinetics with undercooling caused by the rapid solidification. The solid fraction after recalescence was obtained by using the integral method. The thermal responses of atomized droplets to gas velocity, particle size variation, and degree of undercooling were investigated through the parametric studies. It is possible to evaluate the solid fraction of the droplet according to flight distance and time in terms of a dimensionless parameter derived from the overall energy balance of the system. It is also found that the solid fraction at the end of recalescence is not dependent on the droplet size and nozzle exit velocity but on the degree of subcooling.
In the current study, the nonlinear vibration properties of an embedded zigzag single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) are investigated. Winkler-type model is used to simulate the interaction of the zigzag SWCNTs with a surrounding elastic medium. The relation between deflection amplitudes and resonant frequencies of the SWCNT is derived through harmonic balance method. The equivalent Young's modulus and shear modulus for zigzag SWCNT are derived using an energy-equivalent model. The amplitude - frequency curves for large-amplitude vibrations are graphically illustrated. The simulation results show that the chirality of zigzag carbon nanolube as well as surrounding elastic medium play more important roles in the nonlinear vibration of the single-walled carbon nanotubes.
The present article proposes a new droplet collision model including the stretching separation regime and the formation of satellite droplets. The new model consists of several equations to calculate the post-collision characteristics of colliding droplets and satellite droplets. These equations are derived from the energy balance of droplets between before and after collision. For binary collision of water droplets, the new model shows good agreement with experimental data far the number of satellite droplets.

It was peformed to estimate the sensitivity analyses and mass balance for tributyltin in Masan Bay, using the model builded by stella program. The results of the sensitivity analysis for dissolved tributyltin and tributyltin in the particulate organic carbon showed that not only organic carbon partition coefficient but also settling rate is important. In the case of tributyltin in phytoplankton, bioconcentration factor of phytoplankton is most important. The results of the mass balance showed that standing stocks of tributyltin in water, in phytoplankton and in particulate organic carbon are 3.29×10⁴g, 1.16×10²g and 3.17×10³g, respectively. In the case of flux, partition to particulate organic carbon showed most high value, 1.64×10³g/4ay, and next were deposition to sediment, 1.64×10³g/day and transportation to open sea by tide, 1.64×10³g/day.

For the Reactor Coolant System(RCS) flow rate measurement by the secondary calorimetric heat balance method, the coolant temperature of the hot leg is needed. Several Resistance Temperature Detectors(RTD) are installed in the hot leg to measure the temperature, but the average value of RTDs does not correctly represent the energy-averaged(bulk) temperature because of the thermal stratification phenomenon. Therefore some correction is introduced to predict the bulk temperature, but the correction inevitably contains uncertainty because the stratification is not defined well quantitatively yet. Therefore a large uncertainty for the correction has been used for the conservative estimation. But unrealistically large uncertainty causes degradation of the measurement method and yields difficulty to meet the acceptance criterion in start-up flow measurement test. In this paper, an analytical estimation is made on the correction and the related uncertainty using the measured hot leg velocity profile of System 80 reactor flow model test and the measured temperatures of YGN 3&4 and PVNGS 1&2 start-up tests. The results reveal that the magnitude of the correction uncertainty is much smaller than that used in the previous design. Therefore, the confidence on the flow rate measurement method can be improved and the difficulty in start-up flow measurement test can be lessened if the smaller correction uncertainty obtained through this estimation is applied.
The application of satellite imageries has increased in the field of hydrology and water resources in recent years. However, challenges have been encountered on obtaining accurate evapotranspiration and soil moisture. Therefore, present researches have emphasized the necessity to obtain estimations of satellite-based evapotranspiration and soil moisture with related development researches. In this study, we presented the research status in Korea by investigating the current trends and methodologies for evapotranspiration and soil moisture. As a result of examining the detailed methodologies, we have ascertained that, in general, evapotranspiration is estimated using Energy balance models, such as Surface Energy Balance Algorithm for Land (SEBAL) and Mapping Evapotranspiration with Internalized Calibration (METRIC). In addition, Penman-Monteith and Priestley-Taylor equations are also used to estimate evapotranspiration. In the case of soil moisture, in general, active (AMSR-E, AMSR2, MIRAS, and SMAP) and passive (ASCAT and SAR)sensors are used for estimation. In terms of statistics, deep learning, as well as linear regression equations and artificial neural networks, are used for estimating these parameters. There were a number of research cases in which various indices were calculated using satellite-based data and applied to the characterization of drought. In some cases, hydrological cycle factors of evapotranspiration and soil moisture were calculated based on the Land Surface Model (LSM). Through this process, by comparing, reviewing, and presenting major detailed methodologies, we intend to use these references in related research, and lay the foundation for the advancement of researches on the calculation of satellite-based hydrological cycle data in the future.

A solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) based hybrid desiccant cooling system model is developed to study the effect of fuel utilization rate of the SOFC on the reduction of energy consumption and $CO_2$ emission. The SOFC-based hybrid desiccant cooling system consists of an SOFC system and a Hybrid desiccant cooling system (HDCS). The SOFC system includes a stack and balance of plant (BOP), and HDCS. The HDCS consists of desiccant rotor, indirect evaporative cooler, electric heat pump (EHP), and heat exchangers. In this study, using energy load data of a commercial office building and SOFC-based HDCS model, the amount of ton of oil equivalent (TOE) and ton of $CO_2$ ($tCO_2$) are calculated and compared with the TOE and $tCO_2$ generation of the EHP using grid electricity.
Methane gas hydrate which is considered energy source for the next generation has an urgent need to develop reliable numerical simulator for coupled THM phenomena in the porous media, to minimize problems arising during the production and optimize production procedures. International collaborations to improve previous numerical codes are in progress, but they still have mismatch in the predicted value and unstable convergence. In this paper, FEM code for fully coupled THM phenomena is developed to analyze methane hydrate dissociation in the porous media. Coupled partial differential equations are derived from four mass balance equations (methane hydrate, soil, water, and hydrate gas), energy balance equation, and force equilibrium equation. Five main variables (displacement, gas saturation, fluid pressure, temperature, and hydrate saturation) are chosen to give higher numerical convergence through trial combinations of variables, and they can analyze the whole region of a phase change in hydrate bearing porous media. The kinetic model is used to predict dissociation of methane hydrate. Developed THM FEM code is applied to the comparative study on a Masuda's laboratory experiment for the hydrate production, and verified for the stability and convergence.
