  • The purpose of this study is to develop a business model that efficiently converts diesel power generation systems to renewable energy microgrids (MG) in large-scale islands. Most of the previous studies on the conversion of renewable energy MG in islands had limitations dealing with efficiency from the perspective of suppliers. However, the microgrid has the characteristic of getting benefits through the interaction between the consumer and the supplier. In addition, the efficient MG business model from the perspective of new institutional economics is a structure in which consumers and suppliers jointly participate. Therefore, this study assumed that the MG business model in which the supplier's MG and the consumer's community solar participated would benefit all participants, and verified the assumptions using domestic island data. In terms of supplier investment, the cost of power supply (LCOE) of assumed model was calculated to be 14.0% lower than that of the diesel model and 3.7% lower than that of the supplier-only MG model. From the perspective of consumer investment, electricity bills are expected to be reduced by more than 200,000 won per household per year through self-generation of solar power. Social benefits are expected to reduce external environmental costs. The CO2 emissions of the assumed model were calculated to be 39.5% lower than the diesel model and 1.5% lower than the supplier-only MG model. Therefore, the MG business model with consumer participation proposed in this study is expected to be an efficient alternative to renewable energy MG conversion in domestic islands, and is meaningful as an energy plan that improves the benefits of local residents.

  • This paper presents an in-depth review for current status for demand-side management (DSM) investment of energy supplier and an useful prospect on the introduction of Energy Efficiency Resource Standards (EERS). According to the Article 9 of Rational Energy Utilization Act, Energy suppliers-Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS) and Korea District Heat Corporation (KDHC) prescribed by Presidential Decree-must establish and implement annual demand-side management investment plan to improve energy efficiency in production, transformation, transportation, storage and usage of corresponding energy and to reduce demand and green house gas emissions. In this paper, we examine the DSM programs of energy suppliers and the results of DSM investment in 2009, then we propose a reasonable solution for the development of DSM investment. Furthermore, in order to compare our situation, the case studies were conducted on EERS issues in England, Italy, France and U.S, such as establishing the energy saving target, selecting the target energy supplier, and penalty and incentive mechanisms. Throughout the case studies, this paper suggests the directions to the DSM investment planning of energy suppliers and the major issues to prepare EERS in Korea.

  • Under the current policies and compensation rules in South Korea, Photovoltaic (PV) generation supplier can maximize the profit by combining PV generation with Energy Storage System (ESS). However, the existing operational strategy of ESS is not able to maximize the profit due to the limitation of ESS capacity. In this paper, new ESS scheduling algorithm is introduced by utilizing the System Marginal Price (SMP) and PV generation forecasting to maximize the profits of PV generation supplier. The proposed algorithm determines the charging time of ESS by ranking the charging schedule from low to high SMP when PV generation is more than enough to charge ESS. The discharging time of ESS is determined by ranking the discharging schedule from high to low SMP when ESS energy is not enough to maintain the discharging. To compensate forecasting error, the algorithm is updated every hour to apply the up-to-date information. The simulation is performed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm by using actual PV generation and ESS information.

  • The objective of this development project is to localize an automatic molten metal supplier that has been distributed by WESTOMAT, Germany, throughout the world. To achieve this purpose, an energy-saving pressurized dosing furnace and molten metal differential pressure control system that Is able to automatically supply a determined quantity of aluminum molten metal were developed. The localized equipment was installed in a site. Also, the results of the test operation of this equipment can be summarized as follows: It was able to improve the productivity because there were small decreases in supplying speeds and small losses in wastes compared to the existing mechanical molten metal supplier. Also, it was able to minimize the cost in maintenances due to the direct application of high temperature molten metals to molds. In addition, there were small energy losses due to the use of high thermal insulators compared to the existing reverberating furnace and able to prolong the life-time of furnaces and produce good quality nonferrous metals because it represented small carbon refractories and alumina in applied molten metals. Furthermore, it demonstrated no particular differences by objectively comparing it with the product by WESTOMAT.
