In silico analysis of MeJA-induced comparative transcriptomes in Brassica oleraceae L. var. capitata

  • Brassica oleraceae var capitata is a member of the Brassicaceae family and is widely used as an horticultural crop. In the present study, transcriptome analysis of B. oleraceae L. var capitata was done for the first time using eight-week old seedlings treated with $50{\mu}m$ MeJA, versus mock-treated samples. The complete transcripts for both samples were obtained using the GS-FLX sequencer. Overall, we obtained 275,570 and 266,457 reads from seedlings treated with or without $50{\mu}m$ MeJA, respectively. All the obtained reads were annotated using biological databases and functionally classified using gene ontology (GO), the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomics (KEGG). By using GO analyses, putative transcripts were examined in terms of biotic and abiotic stresses, cellular component organization, biogenesis, and secondary metabolic processes. The KEGG pathways for most of the transcripts were involved in carbohydrate metabolism, energy metabolism, and secondary metabolite synthesis. In order to double the sequenced data, we randomly chose two putative genes involved in terpene biosynthetic pathways and studied their transcript patterns under MeJA treatment. This study will provide us a platform to further characterize the genes in B. oleracea var capitata.

플라즈마 보조 전자빔 정련을 이용한 Si내의 불순물 제거

  • 현재의 NEDO (New Energy and industrial technology Development Organization) style Si 정련은 두 단계로 구분되어 있다. 고출력 집속 전자빔을 이용한 금속 실리콘의 1차 용융과 대기압 근처의 플라즈마 아크 용해를 이용해서 B, P를 약간의 반응성 가스를 첨가 하여 제거하는 방법이다. 그러나 저가형 실리콘을 생산하려는 취지와 달리 두 가지의 고가 장비가 필요하다. E-beam melting 장치에서도 반응성이 높은 라디칼을 생성할 수 있다면 하나의 장비에서 두 가지의 정련 작업을 진행시킬 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 고진공에서(< 10-4 Torr) 동작하는 E-beam의 성능에 전혀 영향을 주지 않으면서 플라즈마를 용이하게 생성 시킬 수 있는 방법을 개발하고 이를 적용하여 실제 금속 순도 실리콘 내에 존재하는 B, P가 제거되는지 확인하는 것을 연구 내용으로 한다. 본 연구는 MG (Metal Grade) - Si 을 플라즈마 보조 전자빔 정련을 이용하여 정련한 Si 의 불순물 함량의 개선 효과를 조사하는 것이다. MG-Si 의 정련 방법 중에서 고출력 집속 전자빔을 이용하여 휘발성 오염물질을 제거 후, 플라즈마 아크 용해를 이용해서 B 를 제거하는 방법을 접목시켰다. MG-Si 에 DC power 와 전자빔을 집속시켜서 정련을 하면 챔버 내의 잔류 수증기가 플라즈마에 의해 분해되어 O를 생성하고, B와 반응을 하여 BO 형태로 제거가 된다. 방전 전압 700 V 와 전자빔 가속 전압이 4.5 kV, 방출 전류는 11 A, 진공 챔버 내의 압력은 $7.2{\times}10^{-4}$ Torr에서 정련을 진행하여 B를 제거했다.

Introns: The Functional Benefits of Introns in Genomes

  • The intron has been a big biological mystery since it was first discovered in several aspects. First, all of the completely sequenced eukaryotes harbor introns in the genomic structure, whereas no prokaryotes identified so far carry introns. Second, the amount of total introns varies in different species. Third, the length and number of introns vary in different genes, even within the same species genome. Fourth, all introns are copied into RNAs by transcription and DNAs by replication processes, but intron sequences do not participate in protein-coding sequences. The existence of introns in the genome should be a burden to some cells, because cells have to consume a great deal of energy to copy and excise them exactly at the correct positions with the help of complicated spliceosomal machineries. The existence throughout the long evolutionary history is explained, only if selective advantages of carrying introns are assumed to be given to cells to overcome the negative effect of introns. In that regard, we summarize previous research about the functional roles or benefits of introns. Additionally, several other studies strongly suggesting that introns should not be junk will be introduced.

Comparative Analysis of SOx Emission-Compliant Options for Marine Vessels from Environmental Perspective

  • With growing concerns over air pollutions attributed to shipping activities, the international maritime organization has enacted a series of stringent regulations. In particular, MARPOL Annex IV Reg. 16 requires sulfur contents from exhaust gases of marine engines to be progressively reduced. To comply with this regulation, three feasible options have been introduced: using LNG as a marine fuel, using heavy fuel oil with the scrubber system, and using the marine gas oil (a type of low sulfur fuel oil). For the objectives of this paper, the holistic environmental impacts pertinent to these options were investigated and compared in ways that the flows of energy and emission were tracked and quantified through the life cycle of the ship. Research findings obtained from a case study with a large bulk carrier showed that the use of the scrubber system to purify heavy fuel oil would produce relatively fewer amounts of emissions attributing to global warming than other two options. On the other than, the use of LNG would be the way to operate the ship in a cleaner way in terms of reducing the acidification, eutrophication, and photochemical effects. Throughout the analysis, the excellence of life cycle assessment was proven to shift the environmental impact of marine systems from the short-term view to the long-term one.

  • Global warming awareness through energy conservation is growing due to the regulatory policies issued by governments and voluntary organization that established carbon emission limits. Transportation is one of the major contributors to carbon emissions. Bike will be simultaneously saving money, getting fit and helping to reduce global warming. Web design has been identified as a key factor for the acceptance and success of the websites and electronic commerce. The purpose of this research is to investigate the effective implementation of the proposed Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) technique on a bike case study whose company (Bike Company) is involved in web design for a critical component in the demonstration. Survey research used a variety of data collection methods, with the most common being questionnaires and interviews of some exporters. The research results reveal that the top five key success factors are Good reputation, Transaction security, Ease of use, Promotion, and Diversified choices, which provide the guidelines and directions for decision-makers to design effective websites in the current competitive business scenario. The major findings of this study are suggesting that Internet marketing channels are securing the company's relevance, together with paving the way for methods to increase web traffic.

Design and Fabrication of a Ballast Water Treatment System Using UV Lamps (자외선램프를 이용한 선박평형수 처리시스템의 설계 및 제작)

  • The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted the ballast water management convention at a diplomatic conference in early 2004 that all ships should be equipped with a treatment system from 2010 gradually. In this paper, the disinfection characteristic of ultra-violet (UV) rays was studied and a ballast water treatment system (BWTS) which can treat $50m^3$/h sea water was manufactured. The system consists of a disinfection chamber with six 3.5 kW UV lamps which are operated by magnetic ballasts, a programmable logic controller (PLC) and set of pipe lines. The biological disinfection efficacy of the prototype BWTS was evaluated following the IMO rules using zooplankton such as Artemia and Rotifer species for the size over $50{\mu}m$, and phytoplankton such as Tetraselmis and Thalassiosira species for the size between 10 to $50{\mu}m$. From the experimental results, the disinfection efficacy was 99.99 % that meets the IMO requirement. However, more studies on an energy saving system are needed because the consumption power of the prototype system is as high as over 21 kWh for $50m^3$/h.

  • RI-Biomics field comes into the limelight as a new fusion radiation technology. These rapid development of RI-Biomics cause the necessity of establishment of a new methodical education program model for consistent training of professional manpower in RI-ADME, Biomics field. But domestic current status is not satisfied to training human resource development in RI-Biomics. Actually domestic educational organization related to RI-Biomics just run educational programs oriented basic theory, so practical and fusion education are not existed nowadays for preliminary RI-Biomics expert. Therefore we established a new education program model for educate of the expert in RI-Biomics field to overcome current problem about the route of knowledge that has more monotonous and concentrated tendency and non-professional education. To improve universality and practicality, we conduct education-training model survey about domestic and foreign country. This new human resource development model will contribute to fostering new expert in RI-Biomics field.

A Study on Displaying Color and Symbol of Ice Objects in ECDIS

  • The Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) is an integral component of ship navigation equipment, that enables mariners to view Electronic Navigational Charts (ENC). Recently, it has become possible to transport freight and energy resources via the Northern Sea Routes (NSR) as global warming has been accelerating. However, ice can impact all types of ships and the potential danger that ice poses is significant. Until now, ice, consistently proven to be one of the most dangerous threats impacting navigation in ice-covered regions, has its detailed standard in the specification of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) for ECDIS. The investigations described in this paper were conducted to assess the advantages and problems of the display of ice objects on ECDIS. The experiments were conducted by using the Geographic Information System (GIS) to perform ice objects with their corresponding colors and symbols. Implementation of the standardized appearance of ice objects can enable mariners to access the ice condition of seas in a short time before navigating a safe passage through potentially treacherous waters. However, remain issues that must be overcome for data on ice to be fully compatible with an ECDIS system.
