  • As the seriousness of environmental pollution being on a rise, a low carbon and environment-friendly design for energy efficiency has been issued. With respect to energy in the construction industry, an adoption of BIM which is possible for the various energy performance assessments in the early design phase has been actively working on. In the most cases of energy performance assessment, the data compatibility from the lack of standard software and format became a problem and the improvement for data compatibility system has been needed. This study is to develop the IFC based IDF converter as a middleware which connects between BIM software and energy analysis software. For the building energy performance assessment, Energy Plus and IFC are selected for the standard energy analysis software and its file format. Parameters are organized by steps and the integrated material library is built so it is trying to reduce the existing problem of energy software interface as much as possible. The development of IDF Converter will promote the spread of related fields with increasing the BIM standard and the utilization of energy performance assessment.

  • In this study, silane-crosslinked proton exchange membranes were prepared by step-wise radiation grafting of styrene and 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (TMSPM) onto an poly(ethylene-co-tetrafluoroethylene) (ETFE) film and followed by sol-gel processing and sulfonation. The sequentially grafted films with styrene to provide the proton conductivity and TMSPM to form the crosslinked structure were prepared by different grafting order. The structural changes and thermal properties of the prepared films were investigated by FTIR and TGA, respectively. After the introduction of sulfonic acid functional groups, the distributions of sulfonic acid group and silicon atoms at the inside of the sulfonated membranes were analyzed by SEM-EDX.

  • In this study, several poly(styrene-co-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate)-grafted ETFE films were prepared by a simultaneous irradiation grafting method. After mixing of styrene/(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate(TMSPM) monomers with various solvents, the effects of various irradiation conditions such as total dose, dose rate and monomer concentration on the degree of grafting of the prepared membranes were investigated. Results indicated that the higher degree of grafting was obtained when acetone was used as a solvent. The formation of poly(styrene-co-TMSPM) grafts on the ETFE films was verified using FTIR spectrometry and the distribution of the poly(PTMSPM) graft polymer over the cross-section of the grafted film was confirmed using SEM-EDX instrument.

  • In this study, the hydrogels composed of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), ${\kappa}$-carrageenan (${\kappa}C$), and 1,2-hexanediol (HD) were prepared by ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation. The radiation dose was 25 kGy and the concentration of ${\kappa}C$ was 3 wt%. The physical properties of the hydrogels were investigated as a function of the concentrations of PVP and HD. The gel content and the tensile strength increased with increasing PVP concentration due to the crosslinking between the pyrrolidone molecules and decreased with increasing HD concentration. The degree of swelling was inversely proportional to the gel content because the highly crosslinked hydrogels had a tighter structure, hence reducing their water absorption. The antibacterial tests indicated that the hydrogels containing HD had antibacterial activity.

  • In this study, the distribution behaviors of the polystyrene sulfonic acid (PSSA) grafting polymer across the FEP-g-PSSA membranes prepared by a simultaneous irradiation method, were investigated by analyzing the cross-section of the membranes with a SEM-EDX instrument. The effects of irradiation conditions such as the degree of grafting, FEP film thickness, and grafting solvent on the distribution of the grafting polymer were mainly studied in this experiment. The results indicate that to obtain the evenly grafted FEP-g-PSSA membranes, the higher degree of grafting is required as the film thickness increases, and the lower dose rate are more effective than the higher dose rate at the given dose.

  • In this study, the effect of solvent on the pre-irradiation grafting of VBC(vinylbenzyl chloride) onto a ETFE(polyethylene-co-tetrafluoroethylene) was evaluated. ETFE film was irradiated to generate radical species onto its backbone chain. Each irradiated film was immersed into VBC monomer mixtures diluted with various solvents such as toluene, heptane, and isopropanol etc. for grafting process and then the degree of grafting of each film was measured. FTIR analysis confirmed that the VBC-g-ETFE film was successful prepared. For the films prepared in the various solvents, the mechanical strength and the distribution pattern of the graft polymer over the cross-section of the films were measured and the effect of solvent was evaluated.

  • The effects of refining consistency and plate gap on the specific energy consumption and physical properties of liner were investigated. Higher refining consistency and narrower plate gap brought about the reduction of specific energy consumption to decrease the freeness. Refining consistency and plate gap did not affect the bulk, Taber stiffness and compression index. The reduction of freeness and/or the increase of specific energy consumption caused the decrease of bulk and Taber stiffness, but increased the compression index. The effect of grammage on bulk was not observed, but Taber stiffness and compression index were increased with grammage. The bulk was decreased with the reduction of freeness rapidly at the above 400 mL CSF, and then levelled off. It is expected that the reduction of energy consumption could be obtained from the application of higher refining consistency and narrower plate gap during refining.

  • With the appearance of the climate change concerns, energy transition to renewable energy is accelerating over the world. Korea, a latecomer to the renewable energy sector, has also been unable to avoid energy transition. The government is promoting strong goals for expansion of renewable energy. However, switching from stable and controllable conventional generation to intermittent and uncontrollable renewable generation will be a big challenge for the electric power industry. Korea Power Exchange(KPX), which is responsible for the planning and operation of the electric power industry in Korea, is trying to improve measures in various fields such as the implementation of real-time unit commitment and additional real-time markets in order to cope with the volatility and intermittency of renewable energy.

  • The activation process is the key to graphene's practical application. In this study, the effect of grinding speed in planetary ball mill on structural integrity of graphene has been studied at various grinding speed such as 100 rpm, 200 rpm, 300 rpm, 400 rpm and 500 rpm. The morphology and structure of pristine graphene and ground graphenes were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy respectively. According to these results, structural properties of graphene were improved when grinding speed was increased.

  • It is the purpose of this paper to review the recent developments and future trends in various membrane processes, which will result in energy savings. Historically, there was a long period of academic curiosity in membrane research covering from gas separation to reverse osmosis. With advent of asymmetric membrane technology, many membrane processes proved to be energy efficient than the conventional separation methods. Thus, membrane technology has gained wide acceptance from many sectors of industry. The commercial sale of membranes is still modest compared to the major technologies, but it is one of the fastest growing industries. Recently the U.S.Department of Energy conducted a study (1) to evaluate and prioritize research needs in the membrane separation industry in order to foster and better support the deveolpment of energy-efficient new technologies. The National Science Foundation (U.S.A.) did also do a similar investigation. Both agencies have arrived neary at the same conclusion, that is, membrane separations can offer many new and alternative methods of separations that are more energy efficient than existing processes. This paper is largely based on these findings.
