Reliability evaluation of water distribution network considering mechanical characteristics using informational entropy

  • Many studies have been carried out to investigate the important factors in calculating the realistic entropy amount of water distribution networks, but none of them have considered both mechanical and hydraulic characteristics of the networks. Also, the entropy difference in various networks has not been calculated exactly. Therefore, this study suggested a modified entropy function to calculate the informational entropy of water distribution networks so that the order of demand nodes and entropy difference among various networks could be calculated by taking into account both mechanical and hydraulic characteristics of the network. This modification was performed through defining a coefficient in the entropy function as the amount of outflow at each node to all dissipated power in the network. Hence, a more realistic method for calculating entropy was presented by considering both mechanical and hydraulic characteristics of network while keeping simplicity. The efficiency of the suggested method was evaluated by calculating the entropy of some sample water networks using the modified function.

Experimental study on a new damping device for mitigation of structural vibrations under harmonic excitation

  • This manuscript introduces a new damping device which is composed of a water tank and a pendulum. The new damping device can be tuned to multiple frequencies. In addition, it has a higher energy dissipation capacity when compared with the conventional Tuned Liquid Dampers (TLDs). In order to evaluate the efficiency of this new damping device a series of free vibration and forced vibration tests were conducted on a scaled down single-story one-bay steel frame. Two different configurations were studied for the mass of the pendulum that included a completely and a partially submerged mass. It was observed that the completely submerged configuration led to 44% higher damping ratio when compared with the conventional TLD. In addition, the completely submerged configuration reduced the peak displacement response of the structure 1.6 times more than the conventional TLD. The peak acceleration response of the structure equipped with the new damping device was reduced twice more than the conventional TLD. It was also found that, when the excitation frequency is lower than the resonance frequency, the conventional TLD performs better than the partially submerged configuration of the new damping device.

Research on seismic performance of regionally confined concrete circular column with trapezoid stirrups

  • In order to investigate the seismic performance of regionally confined concrete circular column with trapezoid stirrups (TRCCC) under high axial compression ratio, the confinement mechanism of regionally confined concrete was analyzed. Three regionally confined concrete circular columns with trapezoid stirrups were designed, and low cyclic loading tests were conducted at three different axial compression ratios (0.9, 1.1, 1.25) to study the failure mode, hysteresis curve, skeleton curve, deformation capacity, stiffness degradation and energy dissipation capacity of the specimens. The results indicate that the form of regional confinement concrete provides more uniform confinement to the normal confinement, and the confinement efficiency at the edges is 1.4 times that of normal confined concrete. The ductility coefficients of the specimens were all greater than 3 under high axial compression ratios, and the stiffness and horizontal bearing capacity increased with the increase of axial compression ratio. Therefore, it is recommended that the code of design specifications can appropriately relax the axial compression ratio limit for TRCCC. Finally, the spacing between stirrups of TRCCC was analyzed using ABAQUS software. The results showed that as the spacing between the stirrups decreased, the cracking load and peak load of TRCCC increased continuously, but the rate of increase decreases.

철골 플레이트 커플링 보의 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on Steel Plate Coupling Beam)

  • 본 연구에서는 싱글 플레이트 전단접합에 앵글을 접합한 새로운 방식의 철골 커플링보를 개발하여 여러 가지 구조적 성능을 평가하고자 한다. 주요 변수는 앵글유무, 콘크리트 보강 유무, 매립길이, 결손단면이다. 실험은 커플링 보의 가운데 지점을 2,000kN Actuator를 이용하여 횡방향 반복가력을 가하여 구조물의 전체적인 거동을 알아본다. 실험결과 싱글 플레이트 전단 접합부로 이루어진 실험체보다 앵글을 접합한 실험체가 강도, 변형능력, 강성, 에너지 소산 능력 등 전반적인 구조적 성능이 훨씬 우수한 것으로 나타났다. 매립된 철골보 주위에 전단철근을 보강하지 않은 경우 PC벽체의 조기 지압파괴로 인해 그 성능이 현저히 떨어지는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 전단철근이 배근이 된 경우 철골 커플링 보의 전단 항복이 발생할 때까지 PC벽체의 파괴가 충분히 지연되는 것으로 나타났다. 앵글이 접합된 경우 매립길이가 작아도 그 성능이 떨어지지 않았다. 결손 단면이 있을 경우 강도는 작게 나타났으나 접합부 전단 강도보다 훨씬 작도록 설계된 관계로 PC벽체의 파괴가 발생하기 전에 충분히 전단 거동을 통해 우수한 성능을 발휘하였다. 이러한 결과는 시공성과 경제성 향상을 위해 앵글을 접합한 철골 커플링 보 방식이 매우 유용할 것으로 사료된다.

Impact of cable sag on the efficiency of an inertial mass damper in controlling stay cable vibrations

  • Passive negative stiffness dampers (NSDs) that possess superior energy dissipation abilities, have been proved to be more efficient than commonly adopted passive viscous dampers in controlling stay cable vibrations. Recently, inertial mass dampers (IMDs) have attracted extensive attentions since their properties are similar to NSDs. It has been theoretically predicted that superior supplemental damping can be generated for a taut cable with an IMD. This paper aims to theoretically investigate the impact of the cable sag on the efficiency of an IMD in controlling stay cable vibrations, and experimentally validate superior vibration mitigation performance of the IMD. Both the numerical and asymptotic solutions were obtained for an inclined sag cable with an IMD installed close to the cable end. Based on the asymptotic solution, the cable attainable maximum modal damping ratio and the corresponding optimal damping coefficient of the IMD were derived for a given inertial mass. An electromagnetic IMD (EIMD) with adjustable inertial mass was developed to investigate the effects of inertial mass and cable sag on the vibration mitigation performance of two model cables with different sags through series of first modal free vibration tests. The results show that the sag generally reduces the attainable first modal damping ratio of the cable with a passive viscous damper, while tends to increase the cable maximum attainable modal damping ratio provided by the IMD. The cable sag also decreases the optimum damping coefficient of the IMD when the inertial mass is less than its optimal value. The theoretically predicted first modal damping ratio of the cable with an IMD, taking into account the sag generally, agrees well with that identified from experimental results, while it will be significantly overestimated with a taut-cable model, especially for the cable with large sag.

Retrofitted built-up steel angle members for enhancing bearing capacity of latticed towers: Experiment

  • Many existing transmission or communication towers designed several decades ago have undergone nonreversible performance degradation, making it hardly meet the additional requirements from upgrades in wind load design codes and extra services of electricity and communication. Therefore, a new-type non-destructive reinforcement method was proposed to reduce the on-site operation of drilling and welding for improving the quality and efficiency of reinforcement. Six built-up steel angle members were tested under compression to examine the reinforcement performance. Subsequently, the cyclic loading test was conducted on a pair of steel angle tower sub-structures to investigate the reinforcement effect, and a simplified prediction method was finally established for calculating the buckling bearing capacity of those new-type retrofitted built-up steel angles. The results indicates that: no apparent difference exists in the initial stiffness for the built-up specimens compared to the unreinforced steel angles; retrofitting the steel angles by single-bolt clamps can guarantee a relatively reasonable reinforcement effect and is suggested for the reduced additional weight and higher construction efficiency; for the substructure test, the latticed substructure retrofitted by the proposed reinforcement method significantly improves the lateral stiffness, the non-deformability and energy dissipation capacity; moreover, an apparent pinching behavior exists in the hysteretic loops, and there is no obvious yield plateau in the skeleton curves; finally, the accuracy validation result indicates that the proposed theoretical model achieves a reasonable agreement with the test results. Accordingly, this study can provide valuable references for the design and application of the non-destructive upgrading project of steel angle towers.

폐열 회수 시스템용 공랭식 응축기의 압력 손실 저감 설계 (A Design Process for Reduction of Pressure Drop of Air-cooled Condenser for Waste Heat Recovery System)

  • A novel design process of a parallel multi-flow type air-cooled condenser of a dual-loop waste heat recovery system with Rankine steam cycles for improving the fuel efficiency of gasoline automobiles has been investigated focusing on reduction of the pressure drop inside the micro-tubes. The low temperature condenser plays a role to dissipate heat from the system by condensing the low temperature loop working fluid sufficiently. However, the refrigerant has low evaporation temperature enough to recover the waste from engine coolant of about $100^{\circ}C$ but has small saturation enthalpy so that excessive mass flow rate of the LT working fluid, e.g., over 150 g/s, causes enormously large pressure drop of the working fluid to maintain the heat dissipation performance of more than 20 kW. This paper has dealt with the scheme to design the low temperature condenser that has reduced pressure drop while ensuring the required thermal performance. The number of pass, the arrangement of the tubes of each pass, and the positions of the inlet and outlet ports on the header are most critical parameters affecting the flow uniformity through all the tubes of the condenser. For the purpose of the performance predictions and the parametric study for the LT condenser, we have developed a 1-dimensional user-friendly performance prediction program that calculates feasibly the phase change of the working fluid in the tubes. An example is presented through the proposed design process and compared with an experiment.

Multiple Pounding Tuned Mass Damper (MPTMD) control on benchmark tower subjected to earthquake excitations

  • To explore the application of traditional tuned mass dampers (TMDs) to the earthquake induced vibration control problem, a pounding tuned mass damper (PTMD) is proposed by adding a viscoelastic limitation to the traditional TMD. In the proposed PTMD, the vibration energy can be further dissipated through the impact between the attached mass and the viscoelastic layer. More energy dissipation modes can guarantee better control effectiveness under a suite of excitations. To further reduce mass ratio and enhance the implementation of the PTMD control, multiple PTMDs (MPTMD) control is then presented. After the experimental validation of the proposed improved Hertz based pounding model, the basic equations of the MPTMD controlled system are obtained. Numerical simulation is conducted on the benchmark model of the Canton Tower. The control effectiveness of the PTMD and the MPTMD is analyzed and compared under different earthquake inputs. The sensitivity and the optimization of the design parameters are also investigated. It is demonstrated that PTMDs have better control efficiency over the traditional TMDs, especially under more severe excitation. The control performance can be further improved with MPTMD control. The robustness can be enhanced while the attached mass for each PTMD can be greatly reduced. It is also demonstrated through the simulation that a non-uniformly distributed MPTMD has better control performance than the uniformly distributed one. Parameter study is carried out for both the PTMD and the MPTMD systems. Finally, the optimization of the design parameters, including mass ratio, initial gap value, and number of PTMD in the MPTMD system, is performed for control improvement.

센서 네트워크에서 클러스터 상태 전이를 이용한 에너지 절약 방안 (A Energy Saving Method using Cluster State Transition in Sensor Networks)

  • 본 논문에서는 센서 네트워크의 수명을 길게 하기 위해 각 센서 및 클러스터 헤드에서의 데이터 전송량을 줄이기 위한 방법을 제안한다. 센서의 에너지 소모를 줄이는 가장 중요한 요소는 전송되는 메시지 수를 줄이는 것이다. 본 논문에서는 노드의 에너지를 보다 효율적으로 사용하기 위해 노드의 클러스터 상태를 초기상태, 클러스터 헤드 상태 클러스터 멤버 상태, 비 전송 클러스터 헤드 상태, 비 전송 클러스터 멤버 상태, 수면 상태 등의 여섯 가지 상태로 분류해서 관리한다. 이는 일반적으로 필터의 폭을 넓혀 필터링을 많이 하는 것보다 필터링 효율은 증대시키면서 필터링에 따른 데이터 부정확성을 최소한 줄이는 효과를 가진다. 이 방법은 기존의 연구보다 더 효율적이고 효과적인 방법이다. 다양한 실험을 통해서, 제안한 방법이 다른 방법들보다 더 많은 메시지를 줄이고, 네트워크의 생존기간이 더 증가하였음을 보여준다.

Influence of Bath Temperature on Electroless Ni-B Film Deposition on PCB for High Power LED Packaging

  • High power light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are widely used in many device applications due to its ability to operate at high power and produce high luminance. However, releasing the heat accumulated in the device during operating time is a serious problem that needs to be resolved to ensure high optical efficiency. Ceramic or Aluminium base metal printed circuit boards are generally used as integral parts of communication and power devices due to its outstanding thermal dissipation capabilities as heat sink or heat spreader. We investigated the characterisation of electroless plating of Ni-B film according to plating bath temperature, ranging from $50^{\circ}C$ to $75^{\circ}C$ on Ag paste/anodised Al ($Al_2O_3$)/Al substrate to be used in metal PCB for high power LED packing systems. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) were used in the film analysis. By XRD result, the structure of the as deposited Ni-B film was amorphous irrespective of bath temperature. The activation energy of electroless Ni-B plating was 59.78 kJ/mol at the temperature region of $50{\sim}75^{\circ}C$. In addition, the Ni-B film grew selectively on the patterned Ag paste surface.
