  • Interests have been focused to the renewable energy because energy cost of fossil fuel increased and global climate change caused by CO2 evolution became severe. To overcome these problems, it is essential to develop the energy conversion technologies of renewable resources. Therefore, production and utilization state of wood and woody waste was firstly investigated and then various technologies (pyrolysis, gasification, and combustion) converting the wood and woody waste to energy were summarized. Some case studies of woody waste utilization in europe was introduced with the policy of EU countries. Economical aspect of woody waste was compared with the current fossil fuels and the energy policy of wood and woody waste was suggested.

  • Energy harvesting technologies converting external sources (such as thermal energy, vibration and mechanical energy from the nature sources of wind, waves or animal movements) into electrical energy is recently a highly demanding issue in the materials science community for making sustainable green environments. In particular, fabrication of usable nanogenerator attract the attention of many researchers because it can scavenge even the biomechanical energy inside the human body (such as heart beat, blood flow, muscle stretching, or eye blinking) by converging harvesting technology with implantable bio-devices. Herein, we describe procedure suitable for generating and printing a lead-free microstructured $BaTiO_3$ thin film nanogenerator on plastic substrates to overcome limitations appeared in conventional flexible ferroelectric devices. Flexible $BaTiO_3$ thin film nanogenerator was fabricated and the piezoelectric properties and mechanically stability of ferroelectric devices were characterized. From the results, we demonstrate the highly efficient and stable performance of $BaTiO_3$ thin film nanogenerator and the integration of bio-eco-compatible ferroelectric materials may enable innovative opportunities for artificial skin and energy harvesting system.

  • This paper reports a novel mobile-type wave energy harvesting system. The proposed system adopts a wave glider's propulsion mechanism. A wave glider's blades were mounted on a circular layout and generated a rotational motion. Combining the wave converting system with the wave glider, a mobile floating-type robotic buoy system was developed. It enabled the relocation of the buoy position, as well as station-keeping for long term operation. It had a small size and could efficiently harvest wave energy. A feasibility study and modeling were carried out, and a prototype system was constructed. Various tank tests were performed to optimize the proposed wave energy harvesting system.

  • Methane is the second most emitted greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide. Despite lower emissions than those of carbon dioxide, methane receives significant attention owing to its more than 20-fold higher global warming potential. Consequently, the importance of research on methanotrophic bacteria, microorganisms capable of converting methane gas into high-value materials, is increasingly emphasized. In the case of methanotrophic bacteria, knowledge on episomal plasmids that can be used for genetic engineering remains lacking, which poses significant challenges to the engineering process. The replication origin sequences of natural plasmids within methanotrophic bacteria have been predicted through in silico methods. The basic characteristics of the replication origin, such as a high A/T ratio, repetitive sequences, and proximity to proteins related to replication, have been used as criteria for identifying the replication origin. As a result, a region with a sequence of 18 base pairs repeated eight times could be identified. The putative replication origin sequence thus identified generally takes the form of iterons, but it also possesses unique features such as the length of the gap between iterons and the repetition of identical iteron sequences. This information can be valuable for future design of episomal plasmids applicable to methanotrophs.

  • A new and reusable energy source is water-treatment sludges. There is a significant need for understanding the characteristics of sludge combustion related to improving efficiency and ensuring the safety of this new energy source. Because sludges are composed of solids and gas mixture, the combustion of the mixture may become quite complex. Not only decomposition of conventional organic elements but also dust explosion may be important during the process of converting sludges into a new and safe form of energy. Sludge combustion mainly involves hydrogen, methane, hydro carbons, carbon, and organic particles. Dust explosion during the gasification stage may depend on the surrounding temperature and the composition of gases. The uncertainty in the explosive behavior of energetic source is noted in this work. We study the explosion characteristics of sludge combustion while the reusability of sewage sludges as a new form of energy is also investigated.

  • About 70% of energy input to internal combustion engine is rejected to atmosphere by heat. By utilizing this waste heat, a plenty of energy can be conserved in nationwide. One of possible ways is the thermoelectric generation to utilize engine's waste heat to provide auxiliary electric power. Under th is concept, we have been developing the thermoelectric generation system to replace the alternator by converting the waste heat in the engine's exhaust directly to electricity This system may reduce the shaft horse power of the engine, then improves the vehicle fuel economy and the exhaust emissions. In the present study, the characteristics of the electric energy and exhaust heal energy in city and highway mode driving conditions are analysed by using a gasoline passenger car. These results would be used to determine the optimum design parameters of the thermoelectric generation system.

  • Nowadays, wind energy is the most rapidly developing technology and energy source and it is reusable. Due to its cleanliness and reusability, there have been rapid developments made on transferring the wind energy systems to electric energy systems. Converting the wind energy to electrical energy can be done only with the wind turbines. So installing a wind turbine depends on the wind speed at that location. The expected wind power can be estimated using a perfect probability distribution. In this paper Weibull and Weibull distribution with multiple parameters has been used in deriving the mathematical expression for estimating the wind power. Statistically the parameters of Weibull and Weibull distribution are estimated using the maximum likelihood techniques. We derive a probability distribution for the power output of a wind turbine with given rated wind speeds for the regions where the wind speed histograms present a bimodal pdf and compute the first order moment of this distribution.

  • This paper describes the design, simulation and characterization of an AA size electromagnetic energy harvester that is capable of converting environmental vibration into electrical energy. A magnetic spring technique is used to scavenge energy from low frequency external vibrations. The generator is characterized by ANSYS 2D finite element analysis, and optimized in terms of moving mass, fixed magnet size, coil width and load resistance. The optimized energy harvester is able to generate 53.5 mW of average power at 8.1 Hz resonance frequency, with a displacement of 0.5 mm.

  • Oscillating water column is the most widely used ocean energy converting systems all over the world. The operating performance is influenced by the efficiencies of the two converting stages in the OWC chamber-turbine integrated system. In order to consider the effects of the turbine, the orifice model are carried out. The VOF based Numerical Wave Tank (NWT) is utilized to simulate the water column oscillation inside the chamber and the results are compared with corresponding experimental data. This paper reviews the state of the art in interaction among wave elevation inside the chamber and air flow rate in the duct, which are considered the turbine effects. Effects of incident wave conditions and several shape parameters on the operating performance of OWC chamber are investigated numerically. The effects of the impulse turbine on the integrated system and interaction among the wave elevation, pressure and air flow velocities variations are investigated.

  • An Overtopping Wave Energy Convertor (OWEC) is an offshore wave energy convertor used for collecting overtopping waves and converting the water pressure head into electric power through hydro turbines installed in a vertical duct affixed to the sea bed. A numerical wave tank based on the commercial computational fluid dynamics code Fluent is established for the corresponding analysis. The Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equation and two-phase VOF model are utilized to generate the 2D numerical linear propagating waves, which are validated by the overtopping experiment results. Calculations are made for several incident wave conditions and shape parameters for the overtopping device. Both the incident wave periods and heights have evident effects on the overtopping performance of the OWEC device. The computational analysis demonstrates that the present overtopping device is more compatible with longer incident wave periods.
