  • Increase in oil prices and building energy consumption has been a great burden for Korea which has significant energy dependence on foreign energy sources. In this context, reduction of building energy consumption, which comprises 40% of total energy consumption, is a very important issue. This research therefore empirically analyzed a hospital "P" that implemented ICT-based energy consumption and cost reduction initiative. The hospital first replaced existing water absorber for heating/cooling air and boiler for heating water with water heat storage heat pump system. This was accompanied by subscribing to different electricity price plans to maximize cost reduction. Secondly, the hospital additionally applied ICT-based optimized control algorithm that considers surrounding factors (external temperature, changes in energy demand). The analysis of these mechanisms indicate that the ICT-based energy consumption and cost reduction initiative for hospitals can reduce energy consumption by 53.6% with replacement of low-efficiency equipment and additionally by 18.2% with optimized control algorithm. The mechanisms will provide energy consumption reduction opportunities for other hospitals and buildings with high energy consumption.

  • Recently, efforts of decreasing energy consumption are continously increased and user's preference is also diversified in refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Thus, in order to satisfy these demands, high efficiency, high intelligence, and energy saving for those systems are essential. As the basic study for diverse functions and intelligence of those systems, we investigated the response characteristics through the compressor capacity control concerned with superheat and refrigeration room temperature. And, response characteristics are investigated experimentally by using micro computer based PWM inverter control method. Experimental result of the conventional on-off control method is given in order to be compared to the results of inverter control method. The results obtained through this study are summarized as follows. It is shown from the experimental results of the on-off control method that the range of temperature variation around the steady state ($-18^{\circ}C$) is very large (about $7{\sim}8^{\circ}C$) and the settling time bringing the steady state is not found. In the inverter control method, we can see that the refrigeration room temperature after reaching the setting temperature is very stable without fluctuation and a robust control for disturbance such as opening the door has been realized.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the interactions between the thermal factors in existing thermal control methods and to find out the control logic that can create more comfortable thermal conditions. For it, four thermal control logics were developed:conventional temperature-based control; temperature-based and humidity-based control; PMV-based control; and TS-based control. Their performance was comparatively tested in the U.S. typical 5-story office building in two climate zones (Detroit, Michigan and Miami, Florida) for two seasons (winter and summer) incorporating IBPT (International Building Physics Toolbox) and Matlab/Simulink. Analysis on the thermal conditions and energy efficiency revealed that each control logic created comfortable conditions for their respective target, i.e., temperature, humidity, PMV or TS, but uncomfortable for others (e.g., temperature-based control logic maintained PMV or TS uncomfortably or vise versa). In addition, energy efficiency was significantly different by logics. In conclusion, it can be said that the overall thermal comfort can be improved by the adoption of the PMV and TS as a target variable and their economical benefits are expected in the hotter climate zones with the reduced cooling and dehumidifying energy consumptions.

  • A microgrid which is composed of distributed generation systems, energy storage systems and loads is operated in the grid-connected mode and in the islanded mode. Especially, in the islanded mode, a microgrid should maintain frequency in the allowed range. The frequency is decided by a balance between power supply and power demand. In general, the frequency is controlled by using battery energy storage systems (BESSs) in the microgrid. Especially, droop control is applied to controlling BESSs in the microgrid. Meanwhile, over-charging and deep-discharging of BESS in operation and control cause life-shortening of batteries. In this paper, a fuzzy droop control is proposed to change droop gains adaptively by considering state of charge (SOC) of BESSs to improve the life cycle of the battery. The proposed fuzzy droop control adjusts droop gains based on SOC of BESSs in real time. In other to show the performance of the proposed fuzzy droop control, simulation based on Matlab/Simulink is performed. In addition, comparison of the convention droop control and the proposed fuzzy droop control is also performed.

  • Powering wireless sensors with energy harvested from the environment is coming of age due to the increasing power densities of both storage and harvesting devices and the electronics performing energy efficient energy conversion. In order to maximize the functionality of the wireless sensor network, minimize missing packets, minimize latency and prevent the waste of energy, problems like congestion and inefficient energy usage must be addressed. Many sleep-awake protocols and efficient message priority techniques have been developed to properly manage the energy of the nodes and to minimize congestion. For a WSN that is operating in a strictly energy constrained environment, an energy-efficient transmission strategy is necessary. In this paper, we present a novel transmission priority decision scheme for a heterogeneous body sensor network composed of normal nodes and an energy harvesting node that acts as a cluster head. The energy harvesting node's decision whether or not to clear a normal node for sending is based on a set of metrics which includes the energy harvesting node's remaining energy, the total harvested energy, the type of message in a normal node's queue and finally, the implementation context of the wireless sensor network.

  • The more or less homogeneous fuel-air mixture that exists at the end of the compression process is ignited by an electric ignition spark from a spark plug shortly before top dead center. The actual moment of ignition is an optimization parameter; it is adapted to the engine operation so that an optimum combustion process is obtained. Brake mean effective pressure (BMEP) of the spark ignition energy control device (IECD) than conventional spark system at the stoichiometric mixture is increased about 9%. For lean burn engine, the lean limit is extended about 25% by using the IECD. It was considered the stability of combustion by the increase of flame kernel according to the high ignition energy supplies in initial period and discharge energy period lengthen by using the IECD.

  • Decreasing actual greenhouse gas will be difficult if it is not solved addressed in architectural fields. Zero emission building or zero energy building, maximize the efficiency of energy, which means the building can operate by their own renewable energy facility without any other supplying. To be a zero emission building, a building needs realization of high efficiency low energy consumption, construction of building its own energy production facilities and lastly a power grid connection. According to increasing of DC load about TV, LED lighting, computer, IT in building for living and business, it is expected the save of energy when the system of AC power distribution change into the system of DC power distribution. Renewable energy exists a big different rate produced by outside environment. When electrical power overproduce, it can supply for system. Otherwise, if electrical power produce less, it can receive supply from system. Send and receive power can lead to zero to annual standard. This paper shows the simulation about efficient control of power conversion which is related to DC power distribution of architecture and DC output of renewable energy by using L-type converter.

  • Robot engineering is developed mainly in the field of intelligibility such as a manipulation. Considering the popularization of robots in the future, however, a robot should be studied from a viewpoint of saving energy because a robot is a kind of machine with a energy conversion. This paper deals with minimizing an energy consumption of a manipulator which is driven in a point-to-point control method. When a manipulator carries a heavy payload toward gravitation or the links are de-accelerated for positioning, the motors at joints generate electric energy. Since this energy can be regenerated to the source by using a chopper, the energy consumption of a manipulator is only heat loss by an electric and a frictional resistance of the motors. The minimization of the sum of these losses is reduced Lo a two-points boundary-value problem of an non-linear differential equation. The solutions are obtained by the generalized Newton-Raphson method in this paper. The energy consumption due to the optimum angular velocity patterns of two joints of a two-links manipulator is compared with conventional velocity patterns such as quadratic and trapezoid.

  • Nowadays, the demand of energy saving is increasing more and more while the natural resources have been exhausted. Besides, the emission gas caused by vehicles has been being a serious environment problem. Therefore, many studies have been carried out, especially focusing on braking energy regeneration, in order to save energy as well as reduce emission of mobile vehicles. In this paper, we propose a closed-loop hydrostatic transmission for braking energy regeneration with two configurations to reduce the energy consumption by recovering the braking energy. The effectiveness of the proposed system was verified by simulation. The simulation results indicated that the pressure coupling configuration gave better performance in comparison to flow coupling configuration about 40.8%, 61.7% and 53.8% reduction of fuel consumption in 10 mode, 10 mode modified profile and highway schedules, respectively.

  • A lot of electrical energy is used in our daily life. While energy saving concerns are overall, consumption practices of people in general are very different. People want to control their energy use and by knowing the amount of energy they use. Smart plug is a new device that measures electricity usage through each plug at an outlet with on/off control. User experience for electrical devices in regards to electricity usage should be newly designed. In this study, based on the survey, personas have been devised and their energy use experience in relation with smart plugs have been designed. Service models have been designed as well. By designing service with smart plug, user could enhance the experience of energy usage and saving and energy consumption practices could be improved in a sustainable manner.
