Analyses of hydrogen risk in containment filtered venting system using MELCOR

  • Hydrogen risk in the containment filtered venting system (CFVS) vessel was analyzed, considering operation pressure and modes with the effect of PAR and accident scenarios. The CFVS is to depressurize the containment by venting the containment atmosphere through the filtering system. The CFVS could be subject to hydrogen risk due to the change of atmospheric conditions while the containment atmosphere passes through the CFVS. It was found that hydrogen risk increased as the CFVS opening pressure was set higher because more combustible gases generated by Molten Core Concrete Interaction flowed into the CFVS. Hydrogen risk was independent of operation modes and found only at the early phase of venting both for continuous and cyclic operation modes. With PAR, hydrogen risk appeared only at the 0.9 MPa opening pressure for Station Black-Out accidents. Without PAR, however, hydrogen risk appeared even with the CFVS opening set-point of 0.5 MPa. In a slow accident like SBO, hydrogen risk was more threatening than a fast accident like Large Break Loss-of-Coolant Accident. Through this study, it is recommended to set the CFVS opening pressure lower than 0.9 MPa and to operate it in the cyclic mode to keep the CFVS available as long as possible.

Microstructural Analysis on $UO_2$ and $UO_2$-4wt% $CeO_2$ by Using Additives in Reducing and Oxidizing Atmospheres

  • The effects of dopants on the modification of microstructure of UO$_2$ and UO$_2$-4wt%CeO$_2$ sintered pellets have been studied in hydrogen and $CO_2$/CO mixture atmospheres by using $Ta_2O_5$, TiO$_2$ and $Nb_2O_5$ as sintering additives. The dopant were added as oxide powders and homogenized by attrition milling. The mixed powders were pressed, and then sintered in hydrogen at 1$700^{\circ}C$ , or in oxidizing atmosphere using Controlled $CO_2$/CO mixtures at 125$0^{\circ}C$. Both density and microstructure of UO$_2$ are modified by the addition of dopants in reducing atmosphere. The sintered density is increased with $Ta_2O_5$ addition up to 0.33wt% and subsequently decreased with higher content of the additive. The effect on the densification and the gain growth are apparent with the addition of 0.24wt% $Nb_2O_5$. With 0.lwt% titania and 0.6wt% $Ta_2O_5$, the sintered density is decreased, but the grain size is increased. In oxidizing atmosphere, the grain sizes for UO$_2$ doped with the above additives are smaller than that for pure UO$_2$. The grain size of Ta or Nb-doped UO$_2$ is decreased with increasing $CO_2$/CO ratio, but that of pure UO$_2$or T-doped UO$_2$ is increased. A large portion of second phases is observed in UO$_2$ doped with 0.lwt% TiO$_2$ sintered in hydrogen atmosphere, while, in $CO_2$/CO atmospheres, the second phases or dopant agglomerates are not observed. For UO$_2$-4wt%CeO$_2$ mixed oxide, the effect of additives on the gain growth is not so much as that for the pure UO$_2$. This is attributed to the formation of clusters by dopant cations and Ce ions, so that the additives contribute to a lesser exent to the grain growth for the mixed oxide.

RF 마그네트론 스퍼터링법으로 합성된 Ga-doped ZnO 박막의 특성평가 (Characterization of Ga-doped ZnO thin films prepared by RF magnetron sputtering method)

  • RF 마그네트론 스퍼터링 공정에 의해 Ga-doped ZnO 박막이 O2 및 Ar 분위기 하에서 증착 조건에 따라 합성되었으며, N2 분위기에서, 600℃에서 급속열처리(RTA)를 실시하였다. 증착된 ZnO : Ga 박막에 대해 두께를 측정하였고, XRD 패턴 분석에 의해 결정상을 조사하였으며, FE-SEM, AFM 이미지에 의해 박막의 미세구조를 관찰하였다. O2 및 Ar 분위기 기체 종류별로 형성된 박막들의 증착 조건에 따라 X-선 회절 패턴의 (002)면의 세기는 상당한 차이를 나타냈다. O2 조건에서는 Ga doping이 이루어진 단일 박막의 경우에서는 강한 세기의 회절피크가 관찰되었다. O2 및 Ar 조건에서는 Ga doping이 이루어진 다층박막의 경우에서는 다소 약한 세기의 (002) 면의 피크만을 나타내었다. FE-SEM image에서는 박막의 표면입자의 크기는 두께가 증가함에 따라 입자크기가 다소 증가하는 것으로 관찰되었다. O2 및 Ar 분위기 조건 하에서, Ga doping이 이루어진 다층박막의 경우에서는, 비저항은 6.4 × 10-4Ω·cm을 나타냈고, O2 분위기 조건하에서, Ga doping이 이루어진 단일 박막의 경우에서는 저항값이 감소하였고, Ga-doped ZnO 박막의 두께가 2 ㎛로 증가하면서 저항이 감소하였으며, 1.0 × 10-3 Ω·cm의 비교적 낮은 비저항 값을 나타내었다.

2007년 5월 6-8일 황사 현상의 예측 민감도 분석 (Forecast Sensitivity Analysis of An Asian Dust Event occurred on 6-8 May 2007 in Korea)

  • Sand and dust storm in East Asia, so called Asian dust, is a seasonal meteorological phenomenon. Mostly in spring, dust particles blown into atmosphere in the arid area over northern China desert and Manchuria are transported to East Asia by prevailing flows. An Asian dust event occurred on 6-8 May 2007 is chosen to investigate how sensitive the Asian dust transport forecast to the initial condition uncertainties and to interpret the characteristics of sensitivity structures from the viewpoint of dynamics and predictability. To investigate the forecast sensitivities to the initial condition, adjoint sensitivities that calculate gradient of the forecast aspect (i.e., response function) with respect to the initial condition are used. The forecast aspects relevant to Asian dust transports are dry energy forecast error and lower tropospheric pressure forecast error. The results show that the sensitive regions for the dry energy forecast error and the lower tropospheric pressure forecast error are initially located in the vicinity of the trough and then propagate eastward as the surface low system moves eastward. The vertical structures of the adjoint sensitivities for the dry energy forecast error are upshear tilted structures, which are typical adjoint sensitivity structures for extratropical cyclones. Energy distribution of singular vectors also show very similar structures with the adjoint sensitivities for the dry energy forecast error. The adjoint sensitivities of the lower tropospheric pressure forecast error with respect to the relative vorticity show that the accurate forecast of the trough (or relative vorticity) location and intensity is essential to have better forecasts of the Asian dust event. Forecast error for the atmospheric circulation during the dust event is reduced 62.8% by extracting properly weighted adjoint sensitivity perturbations from the initial state. Linearity assumption holds generally well for this case. Dynamics of the Asian dust transport is closely associated with predictability of it, and the improvement in the overall forecast by the adjoint sensitivity perturbations implies that adjoint sensitivities would be beneficial in improving the forecast of Asian dust events.

리튬용융염계 산화성분위기에서 초합금의 고온 부식거동 (Hot Corrosion Behavior of Superalloys in Lithium Molten Salt under Oxidation Atmosphere)

  • The electrolytic reduction of spent oxide fuel involves the liberation of oxygen in a molten LiCl electrolyte, which is a chemically aggressive environment that is very corrosive for typical structural materials. So, it is essential to choose the optimum material for the process equipment handling molten salt. In this study, corrosion behavior of Haynes 263, 75, and Inconel X-750, 718 in molten salt of $LiCl-Li_{2}O$ under oxidation atmosphere was investigated at $650^{\circ}C\;for\;72\sim360$ hours. At $3\;wt\%\;of\;Li_{2}O$, Haynes 263 alloy showed the highest corrosion resistance among the examined alloys, and up to $8\;wt\%\;of\;Li_{2}O$, Haynes 75 exhibited the highest corrosion resistance. Corrosion products were formed $Li(Ni,Co)O_2,\;LiNiO_2\;and\;LiTiO_2\;and\;Cr_{2}O_3$ on Haynes 263, $Cr_{2}O_3,\;NiFe_{2}O_4,\;LiNiO_2,\;Li_{2}NiFe_{2}O_4,\;Li_{2}Ni_{8}O_10$ and Ni on Haynes 75, $Cr_{2}O_3,\;(Al,Nb,Ti)O_2,\;NiFe_{2}O_4,\;and\;Li_{2}NiFe_{2}O_4$ on Inconel X-750 and $Cr_{2}O_3,\;NiFe_{2}O_4\;and\;CrNbO_4$ on Inconel 718, respectively. Haynes 263 showed local corrosion behavior and Haynes 75, Inconel X-750, 718 showed uniform corrosion behavior.

A STUDY ON OXIDATION TREATMENT OF URANIUM METAL CHIP UNDER CONTROLLING ATMOSPHERE FOR SAFE STORAGE

  • The U metal chips generated in developing nuclear fuel and a gamma radioisotope shield have been stored under immersion of water in KAERI. When the water of the storing vessels vaporizes or drains due to unexpected leaking, the U metal chips are able to open to air. A new oxidation treatment process was raised for a long time safe storage with concepts of drying under vacuum, evaporating the containing water and organic material with elevating temperature, and oxidizing the uranium metal chips at an appropriate high temperature under conditions of controlling the feeding rate of oxygen gas. In order to optimize the oxidation process the uranium metal chips were completely dried at higher temperature than $300^{\circ}C$ and tested for oxidation at various temperatures, which are $300^{\circ}C$, $400^{\circ}C$, and $500^{\circ}C$. When the oxidation temperature was $400^{\circ}C$, the oxidized sample for 7 hours showed a temperature rise of $60^{\circ}C$ in the self-ignition test. But the oxidized sample for 14 hours revealed a slight temperature rise of $7^{\circ}C$ representing a stable behavior in the self-ignition test. When the temperature was $500^{\circ}C$, the shorter oxidation for 7 hours appeared to be enough because the self-ignition test represented no temperature rise. By using several chemical analyses such as carbon content determination, X-ray deflection (XRD), Infrared spectra (IR) and Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) on the oxidation treated samples, the results of self-ignition test of new oxidation treatment process for U metal chip were interpreted and supported.

Synthesis and luminescence characterization of ZnS:Cu,Al phosphor by combustion method

  • A novel powder processing technique for the preparation of copper activated zinc sulfide (ZnS:Cu,Al) phosphor by combustion process has been proposed. Exothermic reaction between dissolved copper nitrate and carbohydrazide give small-sized particles in presence of alkali metal halides at lower temperature than the traditional method of preparation. This new route takes less than five minutes and requires much less energy. The optical and luminescence characteristics of ZnS:Cu,Al phosphor thus prepared were found to be enhanced significantly. Carbohydrazide acted as fuel at $500^{\circ}C$ with rapid heating and then the phosphors obtained were heated at $900^{\circ}C$ in an inert atmosphere for 3hrs to get better luminescent properties.

  • 태양열은 투과되고 인체 및 내부 열원에서 발생하는 적외선은 내부로 반사시키는 산화인듐 주석막은 수동 태양열 포집기로 사용되어 에너지 절약용 창유리로 활용된다. 졸겔 담금 코팅으로 제조된 산화 인듐 주석막의 선택 흡수 투과 특성의 막의 두께, 열처리 조건, 기판의 영향을 UV-VIS-IR spectroscopy를 이용하여 관찰하였다. 졸겔 담금 코팅막은 $500^{\circ}C$, 환원 분위기에서 열처리하면 고유의 산화 인듐 주석막이 형성된다. 알칼리 이온 확산 방지막은 $SiO_2-ZrO_2$막은 태양에너지 투과 효율을 증진시킨다. $SiO_2-ZrO_2/ITO$막은 태양 에너지의 투과를 유지시키고 파장 2700 nm 이상에서의 내부열 방출을 억제하여 에너지 절약 특성을 갖는다.

In this study, the corrosion behavior of Al-Y coated Haynes 263 in a molten salt of $LiCl-Li_2O$ under oxidation atmosphere was investigated at $650^{\circ}C$ for $72\~168$ hours. The corrosion rate of Al-Y coated Haynes 263 was low while that of bare Haynes 263 was high in a molten salt of $LiCl-Li_2O$. Al-Y coated Haynes 263 improved the corrosion resistance better than bare Haynes 263 alloy. An Al oxide layer acts as a protective film which Prohibits Penetration of oxygen. Corrosion Products were formed $Li(Ni,Co)O_2$ and $LiTiO_2$ on bare Haynes 263, but $LiAlO_2,\;Li_5Fe_5O_8\;and\;LiTiO_2$ on Al-Y coated Haynes 263.

  • Porous SiC candle filter preforms were fabricated by extrusion and ramming process. To fabricate SiC candle filter preform, commercially available F180 mesh ($85\;{\mu}m$) $\alpha$-SiC powder and $44\;{\mu}m$ mullite, $CaCO_3$ powder were used as the starting materials. The candle type preforms were fabricated by vacuum extrusion and ramming process, and sintered at $1400^{\circ}C$ 2 h in air atmosphere. Corrosion test of the sintered candle filter specimens as forming method was performed at $600^{\circ}C$ for 2,400 h in simulated IGCC syngas atmosphere. The effect of forming method on mechanical properties, pore distribution, microstructure and crystalline phase was investigated.
