A new and reusable energy source is water-treatment sludges. There is a significant need for understanding the characteristics of sludge combustion related to improving efficiency and ensuring the safety of this new energy source. Because sludges are composed of solids and gas mixture, the combustion of the mixture may become quite complex. Not only decomposition of conventional organic elements but also dust explosion may be important during the process of converting sludges into a new and safe form of energy. Sludge combustion mainly involves hydrogen, methane, hydro carbons, carbon, and organic particles. Dust explosion during the gasification stage may depend on the surrounding temperature and the composition of gases. The uncertainty in the explosive behavior of energetic source is noted in this work. We study the explosion characteristics of sludge combustion while the reusability of sewage sludges as a new form of energy is also investigated.
A large portion of total energy expenditure associated with ruminant livestock production goes towards maintenance. Approximately 55% of whole body energy use is consumed by visceral tissues (including internal organs) with the majority of this going to the liver and gastrointestinal tract. Muscle and adipose tissues consume about 27% of total body energy expenditure. Metabolic components within the viscera responsible for the majority of energy consumption include ion transport, protein turnover, substrate cycling, and urea synthesis (liver). Within muscle tissue of growing animals ion transport and protein turnover account for most of the energy expenditure. Protein synthesis consumes approximately 23% of whole body energy use and visceral tissues account for proportionally more of whole body protein synthesis than skeletal muscle. Research efforts focused on improving energetic efficiency of the tissues and metabolic mechanisms responsible for the majority of whole animal energy expenditure should provide information leading to more efficient production of an edible product.

A PIN photodiode having a low dark current of 1.35 nA and a high external quantum efficiency of 95.3% fabricated for a passive optical network receiver. As the current was increased under a high voltage of 38 V and a temperature of $190^{\circ}C$, it was observed that there is a threshold current at 11 mA which induces a junction failure. Experimental data suggest that the junction failure occurs due to the crystal breaking at the end facet as a result of thermal heat or energetic carriers. This threshold behavior of junction failure is a valuable observation for the safe treatment of photodiodes. As long as the current is limited below the threshold currents, we have not observed failure events of our photodiodes.

To evaluate energy efficiency and partition of nutrients, 32 piglets were weaned at 14 d of age and individually fed diets containing 15% fat from coconut oil (CO, medium chain saturated), high oleate sunflower oil (HOSO, n-9 series), soybean oil (SO, n-6 series), or linseed oil plus fish oil, (LF, n-3 series). After 4 weeks, the subjects were sacrificed to evaluate empty body composition and apparent ileal digestibility with the slaughter method. No statistical effect of dietary fat sources on growth was observed. The digestibility of fat from the coconut oil diet was higher than fats from the diets containing high levels of unsaturated fatty acids. The efficiency of use of metabolizable energy for growth averaged 63% and was not affected by the diet. Dietary fat composition was reflected strongly in backfat. Total body neutral and polar fatty acids were influenced too. For the whole body phospholipid fraction the ratio of n-6 to n-3 and the double bond index were 4.3, 5.8, 7.2, 0.78 and 69, 87, 89, 87 for CO, HOSO, SO, and LF respectively. These results show that for the coconut oil diet the degree of unsaturation of phospholipids in the body was lower and that, in the other diets, it did not differ, but double bond index was maintained with different n-6 to n-3 ratios in carcass fat. On the whole the data on body fat composition indicate that the dietary fat tended to be deposited in similar quantity in the body, whatever was the dietary fatty acid profile.

Two experiments were conducted to examine the influence of kaolinite clay supplementation (0%, 1%, or 2% diet dry matter [DM] basis) on characteristics of digestion (Trial 1) and growth performance (Trial 2) in calf-fed Holstein steers fed a finishing diet. In Trial 1, 6 Holstein steers ($539{\pm}15kg$) with ruminal and duodenal cannulas were used to evaluate treatment effects on characteristics of digestion. Kaolinite clay supplementation decreased total tract DM digestion (linear effect, p<0.01) without effects ($p{\geq}0.10$) on site and extent of digestion of organic matter, neutral detergent fiber, starch and N, or ruminal microbial efficiency. There were no treatment effects on ruminal pH, volatile fatty acids molar proportions or estimated methane production. In Trial 2, 108 Holstein steers ($132.4{\pm}5.6kg$) were used in a 308-d study to evaluate growth performance and carcass characteristics. There were no treatment effects (p>0.10) on average daily gain (ADG) and gain efficiency (ADG/dry matter intake). Kaolinite supplementation tended (linear effect, p = 0.08) to increase dietary net energy (NE) during the initial 112-d period. However, the overall (308-d) effect of supplementation dietary NE was not appreciable (p>0.20). However, due to the inertness of kaolinite, itself, the ratio of observed-to-expected dietary NE increased with kaolinite supplementation. This effect was more pronounced (linear effect, $p{\leq}0.03$) during the initial 224 d of the study. Overall (308 d), kaolinite supplementation tended to increase (linear effect, p = 0.07) dietary NE by 3% over expected. Kaolinite supplementation did not affect carcass weight, yield grade, longissimus area, kidney, pelvic and heart fat, and quality grade, but decreased (linear effect, p = 0.01) dressing percentage. It is concluded that kaolinite supplementation up to 2% of diet DM may enhance energetic efficiency of calf-fed Holstein steers in a manner independent of changes in characteristics of ruminal and total tract digestion.
In this paper, we investigated the post-combustion removal of nitrogen oxide($NO_x$) and sulfur oxide($SO_x$) which is based on the gas to particle conversion process by the pulsed corona discharge. Under normal pressure, the pulsed corona discharge produces the energetic free electrons which dissociate gas molecules to form the active radicals. These radicals cause the chemical reactions that convert $SO_x$ and $NO_x$ into acid mists and these mists react with $NH_3$ to form solid particles. Those particles can be removed from the gas stream by conventional devices such as electrostatic precipitator or bag filter. The reactor geometry was coaxial with an inner wire discharge electrode and an outer ground electrode wrapped on a glass tube. The simulated flue gas with $SO_x$ and $NO_x$ was used in the experiment. The corona discharge reactor was more efficient in removing $SO_x$ and $NO_x$ by adding $NH_3$ and $H_2O$ in the gas stream. We also measured the removal efficiency of $SO_x$ and $NO_x$ in a cylinder type corona discharge reactor and obtained more than 90 % of removal efficiency in these experimental conditions. The effects of process variables such as the inlet concentrations of $SO_x$, $NH_3$ and $H_2O$, residence time, pulse frequencies and applied voltages were investigated.

The characteristics of adsorption and desorption of benzene and toluene were investigated at a fixed bed packed with the activated carbon and activated carbon fiber. Through breakthrough experiments under various feed concentration conditions, it was found that the slope of mass transfer zone and the tailing in the breakthrough curves were different from the feed conditions due to different heats of adsorption. In hot nitrogen desorption, the regeneration time and mass transfer zone of the toluene desorption curve were longer than those of the benzene desorption curve because of the difference in adsorption affinity. With an increase in the regeneration temperature, the height of roll-up and the sharpness of desorption curves increased but the regeneration times decreased. The adsorption capacities of the activated carbon and activated carbon fiber after three-time thermal regenerations decreased about 25% and 37% for benzene and 18% and 25% for toluene, respectively. To investigate the effect of the regeneration temperature on the energetic efficiency, the characteristic desorption temperatures of toluene and benzene were investigated by calculating purge gas consumption and temperature.

The increase of energetic efficiency in plane bearing is getting more important in the transfer mechanism of semi-conductor and display panel manufacturing processes. To accomplish this objective, the technique of surface texturing on bearing surface has recently emerged as one of the most effective candidates. In this study, the effects of various pattern parameters on two bearing performance indices(load carrying capacity and effective friction coefficient) are investigated through a semi-analytic method, i.e., the 2-dimensional Reynolds equation incorporated into the finite difference scheme. Here, cavitation effect is also taken into account by employing an appropriate numerical scheme. In this study, the patterns in the textured surface are composed of a series of semi-spheres or semi-ellipsoids in shape. The effects of their size and number density on the performance indices are examined through the performance of various numerical experiments. Also, the effects of the anisotropy of the semi-ellipsoidal pattern on the bearing's lubrication characteristics are investigated and discussed.
An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of equiprotein replacement of dietary fish meal (FM) with duckweed (DW) and soybean meal (SBM) on the performance of broilers. A total of 112 seven-day-old as hatched broilers were fed on 4 different iso-energetic (2,818 kcal/kg) and iso-nitrogeneous (20.2% CP) diets up to 56 days of age. Diet A was control with 12% FM. In diets B (3% DW + 13.5% SBM), C (6% DW + 11.5% SBM) and D (9% DW +10% SBM). All FM protein of control diet was replaced by DW and SBM. The replacement of dietary FM by DW and SBM depressed feed intake, live weight gain and feed conversion efficiency and increased production cost and thus affected profitability. All those growth parameters had a linear declining trend as the proportion of DW in the diet was increased. It may be concluded that complete replacement of dietary FM by DW and SBM should not be recommended for raising broilers.

Neutral beam assisted chemical vapor deposition (NBa-CVD) process has been developed as a nove,l room temperature deposition process for the light-soaking free nano-crystalline silicon (nc-Si) thin films including intrinsic and n-type doped thin film. During formation of nc-Si thin films by the NBa-CVD process with silicon reflector at room temperature, the energetic particles enhance doping efficiency and crystalline phase in nc-Si thin films without additional heating at substrate. The effects of incident NB energy controlled by the reflector bias have been confirmed by Raman spectra analysis. Additionally, TEM images show uniform nc-Si grains which imbedded amorphous phase without incubation layer. The nc-Si films by the NBa-CVD are hardly degenerated by light soaking; the degradations of photoconductivity were just a few percents before and after light irradiation.
