The annual reproductive cycle of the Korean endemic slender catfish, Silurus microdorsalis, was examined histologically regarding water temperature and day length of habitat, gonadosomatic index (GSI), and development characteristics of female and male gonads. The maximum GSI value was found in May, $1.23{\pm}0.33$ and $11.77{\pm}3.23$ for male and female respectively (habitat water temperature $21.5^{\circ}C/13.59hr$ day length). On the other hand, the minimal level was $0.63{\pm}0.10$ in July ($26.5^{\circ}C/14.17$) for male and $1.36{\pm}0.08$ in October ($20^{\circ}C/11.2hr$) for female. We compared and calculated the stages of testis and ovary development process in order to determine the germ cell development characteristics and the reproductive cycle. According to results, we classified the annual reproductive cycle of the slender catfish into five stages: Growing phase (December-February), Mature phase (March-April), Ripe and spawning phase / Releasing phase in male (May-June), Degenerative phase (July-August), and Resting phase (September-November).
From April to November 2009, we performed field investigation to survey the characteristics of fish fauna and fish community structure inhabited in Yongdam reservoir in the upper Geumgang, which is changed into flat-water zone from flow-water zone by blocking the continuity by the gigantic submerged weir built in the upstream of Geumgang. 15 species belonging to 8 families were collected from natural habitat (St. 1) where its natural characteristics is well preserved, and 11 species were korean endemic fish species. 24 species belonging to 10 families were collected at the down region of Yongdam dam (St. 3), which might be affected by the change of water environment due to the dam, and 11 species were korean endemic fish species. On the other hand, 20 species belonging to 7 families were collected inside Yongdam reservoir (St. 2) which is changed into flat-water zone from flow-water zone by the dam reservoir, and 6 species were korean endemic fish species. In the dam reservoir, due to Yongdam dam built in the upper Geumgang, the original flow-water zone fish such as $Acheilognathus$$koreensis$, $Pseudopungtungia$$nigra$, $Coreoleuciscus$$splendidus$, and $Gobiobotia$$macrocephala$ were disappeared, and instead, the kinds of fish habitating in the flat-water zone tend to increase rapidly, such as $Carassius$$auratus$, $Opsarichthys$$uncirostris$$amurensis$, $Hemiculter$$eigenmanni$, $Zacco$$platypus$, and $Lepomis$$macrochirus$. Relative abundance of the insective fish was 66.7% at St. 1, 40.0% at St. 2, and 54.2% at St. 3. In order to preserve endemic fish species and aquatic ecosystem, it is desirable to minimize the artificial installation in the upper river, such as a large scale dam which can affect the habitat and if inevitable, it is required to prepare preservation measures when building facilities.

This survey was conducted during March to April 2014 in the main stream and tributaries of Xe Pian and Xe Namnoy in order to investigate fish fauna in the Bolaven Plateau. Fish belonging to twenty eight species and eight families were collected from the main stream and tributaries of Xe Namnoy and Xe Pian during the survey period. Among them, Devario salmonatus, Poropuntius bolovenensis, Annamia sp., Sewellia elongata, Schistura bolavenensis, Schistura sp.1, Schistura sp.2, Schistura sp.3, Schistura sp.4, and Macronathus sp. were endemic species in the Bolaven Plateau, indicating a high prevalence rate of endemic species (35.7%) in the area. Meanwhile, Kottelat (2000, 2013) has been reported that four species of Poropuntius inhabit the Bolaven Plateau. However, the major morphic characteristics of Poropuntius species found in the Bolaven Plateau were mostly overlapped, except for the shape of their mouth. The young fish of Poropuntius (> 70 mm SL) have only generalized mouth while the of adult fish the shape of their mouth have two phenotype (narrow and broad). Therefore, it is assumed that Poropuntius species in the Bolaven Plateau has trophic polymorphism as the same species exhibits two different mouth shapes.
To examine the infection status of freshwater fish with Gnathostoma spp. larvae in Myanmar, we purchased 15 snakeheads, Channa striatus, from a local market in a suburban area of Naypyidaw, the new capital city. Two larval gnathostomes were collected using an artificial digestion technique, and observed by a light microscope and a scanning electron microscope. The size of an intact larva was 2.65 mm long and 0.32 mm wide. The characteristic morphology of the larvae included the presence of a long esophagus (0.80 mm long), 2 pairs of cervical sacs (0.43 mm long), and a characteristic head bulb with 4 rows of hooklets. The number of hooklets in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th row was 45, 48, 50, and 52, respectively. Based on these morphological characters, the larvae were identified as the advanced 3rd-stage larvae of Gnathostoma spinigerum. This is the first report of detection of G. spinigerum 3rd-stage larvae in the central part of Myanmar. Our study suggests that intake of raw meat of snakehead fish in Myanmar may result in human gnathostomiasis.
The metacercariae of Acanthotrema felis Sohn et at., 2003 (Digenea: Heterophyidae) were discovered in a species of the brackish water fish, Acanthogobius flavimanus, in the Republic of Korea. They were experimentally fed to kittens, and adult flukes were harvested 7 days later. The adults were morphologically characterized by the presence of a bipartite seminal vesicle, the ventral sucker associated with a ventrogenital sac enclosing 3 sclerites (2 long and pointed, and 1 short and thumb-like), and an unarmed gonotyl. The adult flukes were identified as A. felis Sohn et al., 2003, and the brackish water fish A. flavimanus has been verified as one of its second intermediate hosts.
One new and one the first recording digenetic trematodes are described from Korean freshwater fishes : Orientocreadium koreanum sp. nov. from Liobagrus andersoni Regan (Korean torrent catfish) and O. psedobagri Yamaguti, 1934 from Pseudobagrus fulvidraco (Richardson) (Korean bullhead). The problems of the family Orientocreadiidae and the major identifying characters of O. koreanum are discussed.
This research was an evaluation of the fish fauna and the habitat for Brachymystax lenok tsinlingensis (B. lenok tsinlingensis) for 11 stations at the Bonghwa-gun sanctuary. The predominant species in this research area was Zacco koreanus. B. lenok tsinlingensis, which has been designated as an endangered freshwater fish in Korea, was found in the Bonghwa sanctuary zone, except at stations 5 and 6. The B. lenok individuals were shorter in length than 400 mm. In total, 13 endemic species were found, including Coreoleuciscus splendidus and Iksookimia longicorpus. Specimens of Koreocobitis naktongensis, a first grade endangered species, were also collected. The benthic macroinvertebrates consisted of four divisions, four classes, seven orders, 30 families, 60 species, and 10,344 individuals and were distributed among the orders Ephemeroptera (55.9%), Diptera (18.2%), Trichoptera (12.4%), Plecoptera (2.1%), and Odonata (0.3%).
The ichthyofauna and structure of the fish community of Hapcheon Lake on the Hwang River were surveyed at six localities from May 2004 to Feb. 2005. There were 36 species belonging to 31 genera and 12 families in the Hapcheon Lake system. Of these, 24 species (66.7%) were cyprinids; cobitids and centropomids were next with 2 species (5.6%) each. The dominant species in the Hapcheon Lake system was Hemiculter eigenmanni (relative abundance 28.4%), the subdominant species Hemibarbus labeo (24.1%). Ten species (28.3%) of the 36 were Korean endemic species. Among the endemic species, H. eigenmanni and Squalidus chankaensis tsuchigae were abundant at each locality except site 6, but the eight other species were rare. In biomass, H. labeo comprised about 36.5% of the total weight, H. eigenmanni 22.3%, Cyprinus carpio 7.5%, Hypomesus nipponensis 6.9%, Culter brevicauda 3.7% and Lepomis macrochirus 3.6%. Average dominance, diversity, and evenness index of the fish community collected from six localities in the Hapcheon Lake system were 0.21, 0.85, and 0.67, respectively.
Taxonomic problems of Metagoninus spry. in Korea were investigated. Metacercariae of various freshwater fish species - PlecoBlossus cltiuelis, Carnssius aurctus, Zacco platypus, Zncco temmincki, Opscriichthws bidens - were collected from different localities in Korea and experimentally fed to golden hamsters. Observation of recovered adult worms showed that PLeco91ossus nltiuelis was infected with metacercariae of both M. vokognwni and M. toknhoshii. C. auratus was infected with metacercariae of M. takchcshii and Z. platvpf, Z. temmincki, O. binens were infected only with metacercariae of Metofonimuf Miyata type. From the inferences about the morphological characteristics, host specificities and occurrence patterns in infected animals, Metogonimus Miyata type is considered to be an independent group.
