  • A flow visualization study using the oil film method and the smoke-laser light sheet arrangement is carried out to investigate the three-dimensional flow pattern around the free end surface region of a finite circular cylinder (aspect ratios of 1.25 and 4.25) mounted on a flat plate. The experiment is performed for the cases of two Reynolds numbers: 5.92${\times}$10$^3$and 1.48${\times}$10(sup)5. Various kinds of singular points on the free-end surface are disclosed from the oil surface flow visualization. The smoke-laser light sheet visualization, to aid in understanding the oil streak-line patterns, clearly demonstrates that a pair of tornado-like vortices marched along the downstream together with a pair of side tip vortices. A topological sketch to characterize the surface flow and the four vortices emanating from the top surface is included.

  • The rigid steel connections were suffered severe damage because of low rotational capacity during earthquakes. Hence, many investigations have been conducted on the connections of steel structures. As a solution, steel slit dampers were employed at the connections to prevent brittle failure of connections and damage of main structural members. Slit damper is a plate or a standard section with a number of slits in the web. The objective of this paper is to improve the seismic performance of steel slit dampers in the beam-to-column connection using finite element modeling. With reviewing the previous investigations, it is observed that slit dampers were commonly fractured in the end parts of the struts. This may be due to the low participation of struts middle parts in the energy dissipation. Thus, in the present study slit damper with elliptic slits is proposed in such a way that end parts of struts have more energy absorption area than struts middle parts. A parametric study is conducted to investigate the effects of geometric parameters of elliptic slit damper such as strut width, strut height and plate thickness on the seismic performance of the beam-to-column connection. The stress distribution is improved along the struts in the proposed slit damper with elliptic slits and the stress concentration is decreased in the end parts of struts. The average contributions of elliptic slit dampers, beam and other sections to the energy dissipation are about 97.19%, 2.12% and 0.69%, respectively.

  • In the present study, a new kind of multivariable Reissner-Mindlin plate elements with two kinds of variables based on B-spline wavelet on the interval (BSWI) is constructed to solve the static and vibration problems of a square Reissner-Mindlin plate, a skew Reissner-Mindlin plate, and a Reissner-Mindlin plate on an elastic foundation. Based on generalized variational principle, finite element formulations are derived from generalized potential energy functional. The two-dimensional tensor product BSWI is employed to form the shape functions and construct multivariable BSWI elements. The multivariable wavelet finite element method proposed here can improve the solving accuracy apparently because generalized stress and strain are interpolated separately. In addition, compared with commonly used Daubechies wavelet finite element method, BSWI has explicit expression and a very good approximation property which guarantee the satisfying results. The efficiency of the proposed multivariable Reissner-Mindlin plate elements are verified through some numerical examples in the end.

  • Even though we could not count the total amount of plates in Korean printing industry per year, we would suppose the total amount of plates about $20,000km^2$ to $22,000km^2$ per year through our printing experience. On the standard of the end of 2010, it would be the market share of plates are that CTP plate is $9,000km^2$, CTcP plate is$4,000km^2$ and PS plate is $9,000km^2$, such as total amount of plates are $22,000km^2$. When there was no installed CTP setter in Korea, the domestic plate would be over 60% market share of plate in Korean printing industry. But now it would be less than 25% market share of plate. It is necessary to develop domestic CTP thermal plate from now because we have to keep the market share of domestic plate. On the study of the surface structure of substrate, roughness, anodized layer amount and coating amount between domestic CTP thermal plate and foreign CTP thermal plate, it would be the basic to develop domestic CTP thermal plate.

  • The aim of this study was to examine the validity of fracture criterion for PMMA plates that have a V-notch with an end hole. The predicted stress intensity factors and crack initiation angles by the fracture criterion based on the maximum circumferential stress and the novozhilov's criteria were compared with the experimental results. By increasing the radius of end hole, the differences of predicted stress intensity factors and experimental results increased, possibly due to the plastic zone size. The results indicated that when the radius of end hole is < 1 mm, the fracture criterion would be useful.

  • The interaction of a travelling shock with the shear layer of a flat plate is studied computationally. The Euler and Navier-Stokes equations are solved numerically on quadrilateral unstructured adaptive grids. The flat plate is installed horizontally on the central axis of a shock tube. The shear layer is first created by two shock waves at different speeds splitted by a flat plate. A series of small vortices is developed as a consequence in the shear layer. The shock wave reflected at the end wall impinges the shear layer. The complicated shock dynamics in the evolution to the pseudo-steady state is represented with the morphological transformation of a planar shock into an oblique shock.

  • In this paper we study numerically the shock-vortex interaction in the shear layer generated by moving shock waves above and below a flat plate. The faster normal shock is diffracted at the tip of the flat plate, producing a starting vortex. The slower normal shock below the flat plate arrives soon later to run across the vortex and make interaction. The two shocks are merged together and reflected back at the closed end of the shock tube to impinge on the shear layer developing multiple vortexlets. The computational simulation based on Euler and Navier-Stokes equations shows good prediction.

  • In this paper, an ultra-small marker beacon antenna operated in the VHF-band is proposed. This antenna has a modified linear IFA structure with a lumped capacitor and a capacitive plate for frequency tuning and impedance matching. The capacitive plate is directly connected to the end of a linear radiator and is separated from the antenna ground by 1 mm. The main operating frequency is mainly controlled by the size and dielectric constant of the capacitive plate. The lumped capacitor is useful for fine frequency tuning. Using the proposed structure, an ultra-small marker beacon antenna can be realized with a length of 0.04 ${\lambda}_0$.

  • The analysis of thermally induced stresses in engineering structures is a very important and necessary task with respect to design and modeling of pressurized containers, heat exchangers, aircrafts segments, etc. to prevent them from failure and improve working conditions. So, the purpose of this study is to investigate elasto-plastic thermal stresses and deformations in a thin annular plate embedded into rigid container. To this end, analytical research devoted to mathematically and physically rigorous stress/strain analysis is performed. In order to evaluate the effect of logarithmic thermal gradients, commonly applied to structures which incorporate thin plate geometries, different thermal parameters such as temperature mismatch and varying constraint temperature were introduced into the model of elastic perfectly-plastic annular plate obeying the von Mises yield criterion with its associated flow rule. The results obtained may be used in sensitive to temperature differences aircraft structures where the thermal effects on equipment must be kept in mind.
