It is important to accurately predict the temperature and density distributions in large stratified enclosures both for design optimization and accident analysis. Current reactor system analysis codes only provide lumped-volume based models that can give very approximate results. Previous scaling analysis has shown that stratified mixing processes in large stably stratified enclosures can be described using one-dimensional differential equations, with the vertical transport by jets modeled using integral techniques. This allows very large reductions in computational effort compared to three-dimensional CFD simulation. The BMIX++ (Berkeley mechanistic MIXing code in C++) code was developed to implement such ideas. This paper summarizes major models for the BMIX++ code, presents the two-plume mixing experiment simulation as one validation example, and describes the codes' application to the liquid salt buffer pool system in the AHTR (Advanced High Temperature Reactor) design. Three design options have been simulated and they exhibit significantly different stratification patterns. One of design options shows the mildest thermal stratification and is identified as the best design option. This application shows that the BMIX++ code has capability to provide the reactor designers with insights to understand complex mixing behavior with mechanistic methods. Similar analysis is possible for liquid-metal cooled reactors.
An experiment was performed to study solidification of binary mixture with double-diffusive convection in the liquid. A rectangular enclosure was filled with ammonium chloridewater solution. The phase change and convection process were studied through shadowgraph. Becasuse of the double-diffusive convection, the temperature field and concentration filed were stratified very rapidly. Correlation between solidified mass fraction and the dimensionless numbers was found; solidified mass concentration can be expressed as a linear function of $(Ste{\cdot}Ra^{1/4})^{2-Ste}{\cdot}Fo^{1/2}$.
In the hazardous areas where explosive gases, vapor or mists exist, electrical apparatus and installations must be the explosion-proof construction to prevent or limit the danger of the ignition of potentially explosive atmosphere. In Korea, nine types of protection have been specified in the government regulations at present: flameproof enclosure, pressurization, oil immersion, increased safety, intrinsic safety, non-incendive, powder filling, encapsulation, and special types. Among these types, the intrinsic safety has the construction which limit or by-pass igniting the electric energy using electronic devices. This type has lots of merits but at the same time requires a high-degree of technology. In this paper, we investigated several dominating factors which affect the minimum ignition energy; this energy plays a very important role in design and evaluation of the intrinsic safety type electrical apparatus. Electrode material, which is one of the most important factors, was intensively studied for the five sorts of material(Al, Cd, Mg, Sn, and Zn) with performing experiment in a low-voltage inductive circuit using IEC-type(International Electro-technical Commission) spark apparatus. The experimental results show that the minimum ignition energy of electrode material is varied: highest in Cd and lowest in Sn. We also confirmed the effect of electrode make-and-break speed.

The present study has been performed to investigate the thermal characteristics of under-ventilated compartment fire which is a typical fire condition in structures. A series of fire experiments was conducted to characterize the thermally driven flow in a 2/5 scale ISO 9705 fire compartment. Three different fuels were used in this test series, methane gas, heptane pool, and polystyrene pellets fire. In order to measure accurate temperature, double shield aspirated thermocouples reducing the effect of radiative energy exchange on temperature measurement were used in addition to bare bead thermocouples. The upper layer temperature for well ventilated fire was increased with increasing heat release rate, but it was slightly decreased for under-ventilated fire. The measured temperatures in the upper layer at the front sampling location were higher than at the rear. Thermal characteristics through the doorway were also analysed for a wide range of heat release rates. This study provides a comprehensive and quantitative assessment of fire behavior for under-ventilation condition of fire.

A pilot-scale experiment for the treatment of red tide in the enclosure was done in sea area of Shandong Province, P. R. China on Aug. 25, 2002. With the method of strong dielectric barrier discharge in microgap, $O_2$in air and $H_2O$ in seawater are ionized and dissociated into large numbers of OHㆍradicals, and then dissolved into a part of seawater to form OHㆍsolution of high concentration. With OH' concentration of 0.68mg/L, the kill efficiencies of 29 kinds of red tide organisms such as Chaetoceros lorenzianus and so on reached 99.89%, in which the kill efficiencies of bacterium and vibrio were 100%, and that of Gonyaulax cysts and Prei. Cysts were up to 100%. At the same time, the content of chlorophyll-a was decreased into the lowest limit of test. DO saturation of seawater was greatly increased to 100% because the residual OHㆍradical was decomposed into $H_2O$ and $O_2$after 20 minutes, Therefore the treatment of red tide using OHㆍradicals is a kind of advanced oxidation technology, which realizes zero pollution, zero emission and zero residual in the process of the production of OHㆍradicals and the treatment of red tide.

This paper describes the characteristics of electromagnetic wave propagation in power transformer. A transformer which is similar to 154 kV single phase on-site transformer unit was provided for the purpose of the experiment. The 12 dielectric windows on the transformer enclosure to install UHF (ultra high frequency) sensors and the full scale mock ups of winding and the core were also equipped in the transformer. Every sensors to be installed to the transformer was tested and verified whether they show same characteristics or not before the experiment. A discharge gap which was used as a PD (partial discharge) source moved to several necessary locations in the transformer to simulate dielectric defects. Propagation times of electromagnetic wave signal from PD source to sensors decided by the routes of both reflection phenomenon and diffraction phenomenon were compared each other. The experimental results showed propagation route of the PD signal makes an effect on the frequency spectrum of front part of the signal and the magnitude of the signal and propagation time of the signal when the signal is captured on the sensor.
The effects of CellCaSi and bioflocculant on the control of algal bloom were investigated in enclosures in a small eutrophic pond. The bioflocculant produced by a bacterial strain S-2 was finally selected to remove Microcystis aeruginosa which was a dominant species of algal bloom in the pond. Enclosure experiment showed that phosphorus concentration decreased dramatically from $131\mu{g}\ell^{-1}$ (Control) to $1-14\mu{g}\ell^{-1}$ in three CellCaSi-enriched enclosures. Chlorophyll $-\alpha$ concentration also decreased from $215\mu{g}\ell^{-1}$ (Control) to $59\mu{g}\ell^{-1}$ by the addition of CellCaSi $(1g\ell^{-1}$, bioflocculant $(2ml\ell^{-1}$, calcium chloride $(1g\ell^{-1}$ and ferric chloride $(2mg\;Fe\ell^{-1})$ in Enclosure 4. From the results of the mouse acute toxicity test of the S-2 bioflocculant and the goldfish survival test in enclosures, it seems that both the S-2 bioflocculant and the CellCaSi do not show any severe toxicity in water system. Consequently, it was concluded that the bioflocculant and the CellCaSi could be used to control algal bloom in eutrophic waters by removing phosphorus and chlorophyll$-\alpha$.
The removal of Microcystis aeruginosa and Chlorella zofingiensis by ceramic powder was investigated on the basis of both the particle size (under 0.05, 0.1, 1 mm) and the dosage (0.1, 1, $10\;g\;L^{-1}$) of the ceramic powder. The removal efficiencies of M. aeruginosa and C. zofingiensis were highest with a particle size of 0.05 mm and a dosage of $1\;g\;L^{-1}$ of the ceramic powder in laboratory experiment. $chlorophyll-{\alpha}$ concentrations decreased in both field and enclosure samples with a particle size of 0.05 mm and a dosage of $1\;g\;L^{-1}$ of ceramic powder, resulting in the removal efficiencies of 67 and 69%, respectively. Consequently, it was concluded that the ceramic powder could be used to control algal bloom by removing $chlorophyll-{\alpha}$ in eutrophic waters.

This study investigated the natural convection and radiation in a rectangular enclosure with ceiling vent experimentally and numerically. A heat source is located on the center of the bottom surface. The analysis was peformed a pure convection and is combination of natural convection and radiation. The shape of the considered two dimensional model is a square whose center of ceiling($30\%$) is opened. The numerical simulations are carried out for the pure natural convection case and the combined heat transfer case by using the SIMPLE algorithm. For the turbulent flow, Reynolds stresses are closed by the standard $k-{\epsilon}$ model and the wall function is used to determine the wall boundary conditions. The experiment was performed on the same geometrical shape as the computations. The radiative heat transfer is analized by the S-N discrete ordinates method. The results of pure natural convection are compared with those of combined heat transfer by the velocity vectors, stream lines, isothermal lines. The results obtained are as follows 1. Comparing the results of pure convection with those of the combined convection-radiation through the shape of stream lines, isothermal lines are similar to each other. 2. The temperature fields obtained by numerical method are compared to those obtained by experimental one, and it is found that they are showed mean relative error $8.5\%$. 3. Visualization bt smoke is similar to computational results.

When the study on the relationship between the Head-of-Bed (HOB) angle and ventilator-associated pneumonia is performed, the fact that the HOB angle can only be measured intermittently imposes a significant limitation on the study. Therefore, there has been demand for the development of a device that can measure the HOB angle continuously. In this paper, we propose the rapid prototyping of an HOB measurement system using open-source hardware and software. The proposed system helps to maintain the HOB angle at a particular angle by displaying the angle and helps the medical study of pneumonia patients by enabling continuous data acquisition. Firstly, we eliminate the process of making an MCU board by utilizing an open-source hardware mbed LPC1768. Secondly, we reduce the software development time by using libraries and hence enabling the easy use of peripherals. Thirdly, for rapid prototyping, we build the enclosure of the proposed system using a 3D printer. The proposed system can be attached and detached to and from a bed. Therefore, we can attach it to the bed of a patient for whom measurement of the HOB angle is necessary. Finally, we check the measurement performance and the validity of the proposed system through an experiment utilizing an incremental encoder.
