Purpose: Lipid autoxidation of a soybean oil-in-water emulsion with high oil content was studied under after basil extract and/or iron addition. Methods: The emulsion consisted of tocopherol-stripped soybean oil (40 g), citrate buffer (60 g, pH 4.0), and/or $FeSO_4$ (0.5 mg) with 75% ethanol extract (200 mg/kg) of basil (Ocimum basilicum). Lipid oxidation was evaluated using headspace oxygen content, hydroperoxide contents, and p-anisidne values of the emulsion. Polyphenol compound retention in the emulsion during oxidation was determined spectrophotometrically. Results: Addition of basil extract significantly (p<0.05) decreased reduced hydroperoxide contents of the emulsion, and iron significantly (p<0.05) increased anisidine values and decreased oxygen contents. Co-addition of basil extract and iron showed significantly (p<0.05) lower reduced hydroperoxide contents in the emulsion than compared to those of the emulsion with added iron and the control emulsion without basil extract nor or iron. During the emulsion oxidation, polyphenol compounds in the emulsion with added basil extract were degraded, but more slowlywhich was slowed degraded in the presence of iron. Conclusion: The iIron increased the lipid oxidation through hydroperoxide decomposition, and basil extract showed antioxidant activity through radical-scavenging and iron-chelation. Polyphenol degradation was decelerated by iron addition, which suggested suggests iron chelation may be more preferred topreferentially activated over radical scavenging in the antioxidant action by of basil extract in the oil-in-water emulsion with high oil content.
Effect of different alkane based solvents on the stability of emulsion liquid membrane was investigated using normal alkanes (n-hexane, n-heptane, n-octane and n-decane) under various operating parameters of surfactant concentration, emulsification time, internal phase concentration, volume ratio of internal phase to organic phase, volume ratio of emulsion phase to external phase and stirring speed. Results of stability revealed that emulsion liquid membrane containing n-octane as solvent and span-80 (5 % (w/w)) as emulsifying agent presented the highest amount of emulsion stability (the lowest breakage) compared with other solvents; however, operating parameters (surfactant concentration (5% (w/w)), emulsification time (6 min), internal phase concentration (0.05 M), volume ratio of internal phase to organic phase (1/1), volume ratio of emulsion phase to external phase (1/5) and stirring speed (300 rpm)) were also influential on improving the stability (about 0.2% breakage) and on achieving the most stable emulsion. The membrane with the highest stability was employed to extract acridine orange with various concentrations (10, 20 and 40 ppm) from water. The emulsion liquid membrane prepared with n-octane as the best solvent almost removed 99.5% of acridine orange from water. Also, the prepared liquid membrane eliminated completely (100%) other cationic dyes (methylene blue, methyl violet and crystal violet) from water demonstrating the efficacy of prepared emulsion liquid membrane in treatment of dye polluted waters.
The functional properties of protein recovered from red crab (Chitinonecetes opiiie) processing in water (RCP) were examined and compared with those of soybean protein isolate at pH 2~10 in water and NaCl solu5ion. The solubilities of RCP and SPI were miniumu at pH 4, the isoelectric point and increased significantly at lower or higher than pH 4. Solubilities in NaCl solution for both proteins decreased with incr NaCl concentration increase at all pH ranges. Emulsion capacity for both proteins was also minimum at pH 4 and increased as protein concentration increased from 2 to 6%. Emulsion capacity of RCP was higher than these of SPI at pH 6∼10 and all protein concentrations. Emulsion stability showed a similar trend to that of emulsion capacity. RCP had higher oft absorption capacity and lower water absorption capacity than SPI.
The bioavailabilities of baicalin in water, oil, w/o and o/w emulsion were evaluated in rats. The dissolution rate of baicalin in o/w emulsion was smaller than those of w/o form in dilute hydrochloric acid solution (pH 1.2) and in PBS (pH 6.8). The absorption rate of baicalin from w/o emulsion was smaller than that of o/w emulsion in the different parts of rat intestine of the rats. Following oral administration in rats, the $C_{max}$ of baicalin from water phase, oil phase, o/w wand w/o emulsion were 2.11, 0.61, 1.57, and $1.35\;{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. The relative bioavailability of w/o emusion was 129 % when it was compared with water phase. This result suggests that the improvement of bioavailability for baicalin in w/o emulsion might be practically available.
Silicone oil has organic and inorganic properties, and its skeleton is polysiloxane bonding that silicon is bonded hydrogen or organic group. Silicone compounds are very smooth and lubricant properties by low surface tension, low temperature dependence, and nonadhesive properties. Because of these properties, silicone compounds are used as many parts of chemicals, softener, smooth and libricant agents, water-repellent agent, and defoaming agent, etc. Emulsion was prepared with the inversion emulsification method which adopted the agent-in-oil method dissolving the polyoxyethylene(7) tridecyl ether(HLB 12.2) into methoxy terminated poly(dimethyl-co-methyl amino) siloxane and hydroxy terminated poly(dimethyl-co-methyl amino) siloxane in water. At this time, processed emulsion was almost microemulsion. When ratio of emulsifier increases, emulsion is stable bacuause microemulsion is solubilized by emulsion drop size and zeta-potential are decreased. But, when amount of electrolyte is increase, emulsion became unstable because emulsion drop size is increased.
A highly dispersed W/O emulsion of silicone oil (cyclomethicone)/water system was prepared with a nonionic surfactant. The surface and interfacial tension between the oil and water were characterized in terms of the droplet size distribution and viscosity change of the emulsion. When the dispersed phase concentration was relatively high, the viscosity of the emulsion was rapidly increased and the droplet size of the emulsion was decreased. The rheological behavior of the emulsion system showed non-Newtonian and shear thinning phenomena depending upon the content of the dispersed phase. The droplet size of the emulsion was decreased with increasing surfactant content and water concentration. The relative viscosity of the emulsion was better predicted with the Choi-Schowalter model than with the Taylor model. The value of the complex modulus increased with increasing surfactant concentration. The linear viscoelastic region was expanded with a dispersed phase concentration. According to the change in the viscosity, the behavior was classified into three distinct regions: [I] linear viscoelastic, [II] partially viscoelastic, and [III] viscous. The creep/recovery behaviors in each region were characterized.
This study was carried in order to manufacture the high quality coated paper. High quality includes not only properties of coated paper but also final print quality. In this study, new acrylic-styrene emulsion was polymerized in laboratory and compared with styrene-butadiene latex. Low-shear viscosity of coating color was decreased with increasing acrylic-emulsion dosage. WRV was increased with addition and decreased with substitution of acrylic-emulsion. Paper gloss, brightness and whiteness were increased and PPS and opacity was slightly decreased with acrylic-emulsion. Ink gloss was increased with using No. 3 acrylic-emulsion due to lower ink setting properties. However No.1, 2 emulsion shows opposite situation. Surface strength of coated paper was increased with using No. 3 acrylic-emulsion These results indicate that high quality coated paper can be manufactured with using No. 3 acrylic-emulsion.
Emulsion liquid membrane (ELM) process suffers from emulsion instability problem. So far, emulsion produced by mechanical methods such as stirrer and homogenizer has big size and high emulsion breakage. This paper discussed the application of emulsion produced by sonicator to extract cadmium in a batch ELM system. The emulsions consist of N,N-Dioctyl-1-octanamine (trioctylamine/TOA), nitrogen trihydride (ammonia/NH4OH), sorbitan monooleate (Span 80), and kerosene as carrier, stripping solution, emulsifying agent, and organic diluent, respectively. Effects of comprehensive parameters on extraction efficiency of Cd(II) such as emulsification time, extraction time, stirring speed, surfactant concentration, initial feed phase concentration, carrier concentration, volume ratio of the emulsion to feed phase, and pH of initial feed phase were evaluated. The results showed that extraction efficiencies of Cd(II) greater than 98% could be obtained under the following conditions: 15 minutes of emulsification time, 4 wt.% of Span 80 concentration, 4 wt.% of TOA concentration, 15 minutes of extraction time, 250 rpm of stirring speed, 100 ppm of initial feed concentration, volume ratio of emulsion to feed phase of 1:5, and initial feed pH of 1.53.
As well as crop cultivation, they could not avoid automatizing and using more environmental friendly process in cultivation of fruit. And also, the consumer ask more safe fruit which is produced with more clean method. This is why the usage of aid materials for fruit cultivation like as fruiting bags are increasing. Practical utilization of wax emulsion treated water repelling fruiting bags are developed continuously and it's properties is compared properties of nomal fruiting bags. The water repelling process was developed with wax emulsion coating. After the experiment of wax emulsion preparation from paraffin and DEA and/or OA in Lab. scale, the wax emulsion was manufactured on pilot scale. The wax emulsion coated paper was prepared in mill scale coater. The water repellency and properties of emulsion coated fruiting bags were evaluated and compared with that of current fruiting bags.
