Comparison of soil erosion simulation between empirical and physics-based models

  • In recent years, soil erosion has come to be regarded as an essential environmental problem in human life. Soil erosion causes various on- and off-site problems such as ecosystem destruction, decreased agricultural productivity, increased riverbed deposition, and deterioration of water quality in streams. To solve these problems caused by soil erosion, it is necessary to quantify where, when, how much soil erosion occurs. Empirical erosion models such as the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) family models have been widely used to make spatially distributed soil erosion vulnerability maps. Even if the models detect vulnerable sites relatively well by utilizing big data related to climate, geography, geology, land use, etc. within study domains, they do not adequately describe the physical process of soil erosion on the ground surface caused by rainfall or overland flow. In other words, such models remain powerful tools to distinguish erosion-prone areas at the macro scale but physics-based models are necessary to better analyze soil erosion and deposition and eroded particle transport. In this study, the physics-based Surface Soil Erosion Model (SSEM) was upgraded based on field survey information to produce sediment yield at the watershed scale. The modified model (hereafter MoSE) adopted new algorithms on rainfall kinematic energy and surface flow transport capacity to simulate soil erosion more reliably. For model validation, we applied the model to the Doam dam watershed in Gangwon-do and compared the simulation results with the USLE outputs. The results showed that the revised physics-based soil erosion model provided more improved and reliable simulation results than the USLE in terms of the spatial distribution of soil erosion and deposition.

  • A quasidimensional program is developed for a four stroke cycle homogeneous GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) engine. It includes models for spray, burning rate and chemistry to predict knock and emissions. With early injection a homogeneous GDI engine goes through spark ignited, turbulent premixed combustion as in PFI (Port Fuel Injection) engines. The cylinder charge is divided into unburned and burned zone with the latter divided into multiple zones of equal mass to resolve temperature stratification. Validation is performed against measured pressure traces, NOx and CO emissions at different load and RPM conditions. Comparison is made between an empirical knock model and predictions by the chemistry model in this work.

  • Development of the 3 scales comprising the present research was based on review of literature, existing screening scales, and empirical research pertaining to (Scale I) the development of social and emotional problems of children, (Scale II) parent-child relations, and (Scale III) assessment of children's environment. Professionals in each area approved a draft of the new screening scale. The clinical group was classified into normal and at-risk groups based on the Denver II scale and the Child Behavior Check List(ages 1.5-5). The clinical groups were administered the newly developed screening scale to see whether the same classification pertained. Results proved the cross-validity of the new scale.

  • This research focuses on the development and empirical validation of a model of software piracy behavior on the basis of deterrence theory, expected utility theory and the theory of reasoned action. The total of sample numbered 86 and PLS (Partial Least Square) was utilized for analysis. The test of this study revealed that punishment severity was the greatest significant factor to influence to software piracy and subjective norms was also significantly related to it. However punishment certainty and software cost do not significantly affect to software piracy.

  • While the importance of adopting cloud computing service has been emerged, comparatively little research has been conducted on examining factors of an individual user's intention to switch toward cloud computing service. Hereafter, this study presents and empirically tests users' intention to switch to cloud computing. Our model posits that the characteristics of cloud computing such as collaboration support, accessability, trust to cloud service affect perceived value, which in turn, influences intention to switch. An experimental study using student subjects provided empirical validation for our proposed model. Survey data from 106 respondents was used to test the model using partial least square analysis. According to our results, the characteristics of cloud computing were found to have significant impact on users' intention to switch that partially mediated by perceived value. Based on our research findings, we hope that this research will stimulate researchers' interest in the emerging area of cloud computing adoption.

  • Given the industry's unprecedented attention and dedication of resources to voice recognition, this paper introduces and explores a novel idea generation technique whereby ideas are captured directly through verbalization rather than forcing group members to type ideas. A group simulator was used to measure the idea generation performance of individuals who input ideas verbally or via typing in the context of nominal and interacting groups. The results clearly indicate that verbal input represents a more desirable mechanism in a computer-mediated idea generation environment. Liberating group members from the keyboard produces remarkable performance gains. Verbalizing ideas helps individuals focus on analytical thinking and leverage group member ideas, ultimately facilitating the creation of ideas pools that are vastly superior in terms of quantity and quality. These effects were found across nominal and interacting groups. The implications of these results for future research and the design of technologies are discussed.

  • This paper studied the determinants affected the gamer's flow and communication on personal factors and environmental factors. The study deeply researched on the influence of flow and communication on customer loyalty, comparing korean gamer's behavior with chinese ones as research objects. As a result for this study, on-line game with high customer loyalty are considered as the more successful ones, resulted in korean gamers more influential on customer loyalty than chinese gamers, and suggested the strategic directions for online game developers and services.

  • This research focuses on internet advertisement success factors derived from the relevant researches and clarified the concept of user and information characteristics. The corresponding determinants are suggested such as organizational characteristics, user characteristics, and information characteristics. Success factor of internet advertisement is used by user attitude. We then examine the impact of corresponding determinants on the success factors. Hypotheses on their characteristics were tested for 174 persons. The results indicated that organizational characteristic, user characteristic and information characteristic was partly found as a positive impact on the internet advertisement success while quality of innovation and purchase promotion traits were not significant.

  • The development and empirical validation of a mathematical model for predicting the depth of deformed layer in a machined surface are presented. The main assumption for develioping this model is that there is a linear relationship between plastic strain and the depth to which it extends. The model relates the work required to shear the workpice material to the work needed to compress the workpiece material ahead of the cutting tool. The results show that the percent difference between the calculated and the measured depth of deformed layer ranges form 4 percent to 19 percent. An improvement of the model is suggested through application of actual distribution data of plastic strain.

  • We could confirm through this study that in the company which has secured its agility in an information technology dimension, a process dimension and an organization behavior dimension as a real time enterprise, various agility competences of that company are used more effectively for productivity Improvement, development on new products and customer satisfaction. Therefore, based on these determinant factors, it has been proved that an individually differentiated investment of technical and organizational resources for development and innovation of new products has contributed affirmatively to get a more efficient enterprise performance : and, in this point, it is verified again that the agility secured through a conversion toward the real time enterprise (RTE) is a more effective plan to increase the enterprise performance.
