  • Aerodynamic forces of vortex-induced vibration and galloping are going to be coupled when their onset velocities are close to each other, which will induce the cross-wind amplitudes of the structures increased continuously with ever-increasing wind velocities. The main purpose of the present work is going to propose an empirical formula to predict the response amplitude of VIV-galloping interaction. Firstly, two typical mathematical models for the coupled oscillations, i.e., Tamura & Shimada model and Parkinson & Corless model are comparatively summarized. Then, the key parameter affecting response amplitude is determined through comparative numerical simulations with Tamura & Shimada model. For rectangular cylinders with the side ratio from 0.5 to 2.5, which are actually prone to develop the VIV and galloping induced interaction responses, an empirical amplitude prediction formula is proposed after regression analysis on comprehensively collected experimental data with the predetermined key parameter.

  • The pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics analysis software NONMEM$^{(R)}$ output provides model parameter estimates and associated standard errors. However, the standard error of empirical Bayes estimates of inter-subject variability is not available. A simple and direct method for estimating standard error of the empirical Bayes estimates of inter-subject variability using the NONMEM$^{(R)}$ VI internal matrix POSTV is developed and applied to several pharmacokinetic models using intensively or sparsely sampled data for demonstration and to evaluate performance. The computed standard error is in general similar to the results from other post-processing methods and the degree of difference, if any, depends on the employed estimation options.

  • In this study, a empirical equation which can be feasibly used to evaluate minimal track buckling strength without exact numerical analysis is presented. Parameter studies we carried out to investigate the effects of the individual factor on buckling strength. In order to simulate track buckling in the field as precisely as possible, a rigorous buckling model which accounts for all the important parameters is adopted. A empirical equation for prediction of minimal track buckling strength is derived by taking nonlinear regression of data which are obtained from numerical analyses. Its characteristics and applicability are investigated by comparing the results by the presented equation with the one by the equation which was presented in japan, and is frequently using in korea when designing track structure.

  • It has been pointed out that the classical credibility model used in Korea since the beginning of 1990's lacks in objectiveness. Recently, in order to improve objectiveness, the empirical Bayes credibility model utilizing general exposure units like the number of claims and premium has been employed, but that model itself is not quite applicable in the country like Korea whose annual and classified empirical data are not well accumulated and even varied severely. In this article, we propose a new and better model, Based on the new model, we estimate both credibility and loss ratio of each class for fire insurance plans by Korean insurance companies. As a conclusion, we empirically make sure analysis that the number of claims is a more reasonable exposure unit than premium.

  • Purpose - The study on the consumption structure of urban residents can help us to understand demand law and to grasp the changing consumption trend of people. Consumption structure is an important indicator reflecting the people's living standard. It is of realistic significance to study urban consumption structure. Research data and methodology - This study is carried out with data connected with urban residents from Shandong Statistical Yearbook for the period 2000-2010 analyzing eight commodity groups. The almost ideal demand system (AIDS) is one of the important models related to consumption structure. Results - This paper shows that firstly gives a brief introduction to AIDS. Then it makes an empirical analysis on the urban residents' consumption structure in Shandong province, China on the basis of AIDS model. Conclusions - the authorities are supposed to control the prices of HC, Foodstuff and Housing and encourage the consumption of HC, Housing, EE accordingly. At the same time, local government should increase the supply of goods connected with housing, HA, HC, and EE so as to attract more consumption from the urban residents in Shandong.

  • Social capitals are getting more important for management in enterprises, especially in small and medium sized enterprises(SMEs). The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of social capitals on the performance of intellectual property. For the empirical analysis, survey data were collected from 138 companies in one industry cluster, 34 companies in the other one. The data were compared using regression analysis. The findings confirm a positive influence of the conceptive social capital on the performance of intellectual property while there are no effect of structural and relational social capitals on the performance. These are different from the past researches. In addition, there is no difference between industrial types such as IT, BT, and NT in terms of the effect of social capitals on the performance of intellectual property. Also there is no difference between the two industry clusters.

  • In this paper, we consider Bayesian approaches to partially linear models, in which a regression function is represented by a semiparametric additive form of a parametric linear regression function and a nonparametric regression function. We make a comparative study on the performance of widely used Bayesian partially linear models in terms of empirical analysis. Specifically, we deal with three Bayesian methods to estimate the nonparametric regression function, one method using Fourier series representation, the other method based on Gaussian process regression approach, and the third method based on the smoothness of the function and differencing. We compare the numerical performance of three methods by the root mean squared error(RMSE). For empirical analysis, we consider synthetic data with simulation studies and real data application by fitting each of them with three Bayesian methods and comparing the RMSEs.

  • The time dependences of the luminance properties of 55-inch CCFL and LED backlights and 32-inch FFL backlights with LCD panels were investigated during the warm-up time from the cold start. The long-term luminance maintenance curve of a standard CCFL was examined in a time window up to 5000 hours. These two time dependences are important characteristics from the viewpoint of initial picture quality and lifetime reliability, respectively. Empirical equations were suggested for the analysis of the time dependence of these luminance data. These approaches are expected to be helpful in predicting the luminance properties of backlights based on the luminance data obtained in a limited time window.

  • We suggest that cultural differences among nations should have a significant impact upon the exports of Korean broadcasting contents due to the fact that production and consumption of the contents are influenced by their own cultural aspects. Based on Hofstede's cultural dimensions frequently cited in the literature, we perform empirical analysis to identify the impact of cultural dimensions upon the export amounts by investigating four-year export data of Korean broadcasting industry. In our research model, Hofstede's cultural dimensions and GDP per capita are independent variables and a genre of broadcasting contents is used as a moderating variable. We find in our analysis that three cultural dimensions such as individualism, uncertainty avoidance, masculinity significantly affect the export amount but do not find the impact of power distance.

  • The purpose of this study was to test system model for family resources management developed by Deacon and Firebaugh. The data were collected by means of a questionnaire destributed to a stratified sample of 600 housewives living in Seoul. The questionnaires specially developed by the researchers contained of 118 items. the coefficient alpha reliability estimate for this instrument was conducted using Cronbach' procedures. The data were analyzed using frequency, percentile, mean, step wise multiple regression and path analysis. The results of path analysis showed that the level of the elements of satisfaction with the management was correlated with demands(the household size, the age of the last child, employment status of respondents), resources(marital satisfaction, health of respondents), and throughput(standard setting, reality in planning, the existence of facilitating conditions). A system model for family resource management received considerabel empirical support. This presumed that the components of demands lead to the lower satisfaction with management. The throughput components were also important in explaining satisfaction with management some of research and methodology issues for the advanced study were suggested.
