  • Objectives : The Self-Assessment Manikin (SAM) developed by Bradley and Lang is a non-verbal pictorial assessment tool that measures human emotion and has been widely used. However, the pictures in SAM have not been easy for Korean subjects to understand or relate to. The authors developed a new manikin (Emotional Valence and Arousal Manikin, EVAS) modeling it after Korean faces while modifying and standardizing the SAM. Methods : Forty-one healthy subjects participated in this study. They were asked to rate the emotional valence and level of arousal using both the SAM and EVAS after being exposed to pictures of facial expressions for affective neurosciences-Korean version. The internal consistency of the EVAS and the correlation between EVAS and SAM were examined. Resuts : Internal consistencies of the valence using the EVAS were from 0.63 (surprise) to 0.82 (happiness) and those of the arousal were from 0.90 to 0.95. Correlation coefficients of the valence and arousal between the SAM and EVAS were from 0.61 (both surprise and disgust) to 0.84 (neutral) and from 0.82 (sadness) to 0.94 (fear), respectively. Conclusions : We developed a new manikin (the EVAS) for the Korean population modifying and standardizing the SAM. The EVAS demonstrated a good internal consistency and validity. As such, it can be used in the field of human emotion research.

  • The International Affective Picture System (IAPS) developed by Lang and colleagues[1] is widely used in studies relating a variety of physiological indices to subjective emotions. In this study we investigated whether the IAPS can be used for Koreans without significant cultural biases in their subjective emotional reactions. Thirty IAPS picture slides were presented to a group of 52 college students and different 30 slides with similar 3 dimensional emotion ratings to another group of 42 students. Fof each slieds with exposal time of 8sec, subjects were asked to rate on the Semantic Differential Scale (SDS) and Self-Assessment Manikin (SAM) in the 3 dimensions of pleasure valence, arousal, and domensions of pleasure valence, arousal, and dominance. Fnctor analysis was done for SDS ratings, and correlations of SDS and SAM were calculated. Eighteen bipolar adjective were grouped into 3 dimensions of pleasure, arousal, dominance showing good agreement with previous study. SAM were calculated. Eighteen bipolar adjectives were grouped into 3 dimensions of pleasure, arousal, dominance showing good agreement with the previous study. SAM ratings were highly corrlated with two of the 6 SDS adjective pairs associated with the pleasure and dominance dimensions, but not with those associated with arousal dimension suggerting some cultural differences.

  • Objectives : Placebo phenomena have been considered as a confounding factor of clinical trial. Expectancy and belief of acupuncture have not been evaluated quantitatively. The present study was performed to analyze the emotional and cognitive factor .of acupuncture and investigate whether the expectancy of acupuncture treatment is associated with the cognition of acupuncture. Methods : The expectancy and the perception of bodily sensation (PBS) of 22 participants were assessed using self-reported questionnaire. The subjects used the self assessment manikin (SAM) to rate each of the standard affective image of the international affective picture system (lAPS) and other acupuncture-related image. Based on the degree of expectancy, the high expectant (HE) and the low expectant (LE) group were classified. The thermal and pressure pain threshold was objectively evaluated using radiant-heat device and algometer. The degree of expected pain of acupuncture and the actual pain of painful stimulation was subjectively evaluated using facial pain scales (FPS). Results : Using SAlVI analysis, we identified the negative correlation between hedonic valence and arousal dimension on acupuncture-related visual cue. The degree of the PBS and general pain threshold did not show any significant difference between the HE and the LE group. The HE group rated the acupuncture images as more pleasant, more arousing, than the LE group. In addition, we also found that the higher expectancy marked the lower FPS of the expected pain of acupuncture, but not of the actual pain of painful stimulation. Conclusions : Our preliminary study identified the psychological dimensions of acupuncture-related visual cue. These findings indicate that the expectancy of acupuncture could affect the cognition of acupuncture.
