Korean Emotional Laborers' Job Stressors and Relievers: Focus on Work Conditions and Emotional Labor Properties

  • Background: The present study aims to investigate job stressors and stress relievers for Korean emotional laborers, specifically focusing on the effects of work conditions and emotional labor properties. Emotional laborers are asked to hide or distort their real emotions in their interaction with clients. They are exposed to high levels of stress in the emotional labor process, which leads to serious mental health risks including burnout, depression, and even suicide impulse. Exploring job stressors and relieving factors would be the first step in seeking alternatives to protect emotional laborers from those mental health risks. Methods: Using the third wave data of Korean Working Conditions Survey, logistic regression analysis was conducted for two purposes: to examine the relations of emotional labor and stress, and to find out job stressors and relievers for emotional laborers. Results: The chances of stress arousal are 3.5 times higher for emotional laborers; emotional laborers experience double risk-burden for stress arousal. In addition to general job stressors, emotional laborers need to bear burdens related to emotional labor properties. The effect of social support at the workplace is not significant for stress relief, unlike common assumptions, whereas subjective satisfaction (wage satisfaction and work-life balance) is proven to have relieving effects on emotional laborers' job stress. Conclusion: From the results, the importance of a balanced understanding of emotional labor for establishing effective policies for emotional laborer protection is stressed.

일 도시 감정노동자의 직무스트레스와 우울증의 연관성 (The Relationship Between Job Stress and Depressive Disorder Among Emotional Laborers in a City)

  • Objective : The purpose of our study was to investigate the relationship between job stress and depressive disorder among emotional laborers in a city. Methods : A total of 677 emotional laborers living in Jeonju-city participated in this study. The participants completed survey questions regarding demographic characteristics, job stress (using the Korean Occupational Stress Scale-24, KOSS-24), and depression (the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, PHQ-9). Logistic regression was performed to estimate the association between job stress and depression. Results : Our results indicated that 34.9% of the participants had a high risk of total job stress and 21.7% of participants had depression. In the multivariate logistic regression analysis, female sex (OR=1.66, 95% CI=1.01-2.72) and total job stress (OR=3.84, 95% CI=2.57-5.75) were significantly associated with depression after adjusting for confounding factors. Among the subscales of job stress, job demand (OR=3.06, 95% CI=1.99-4.72) and occupational climate (OR=1.88, 95% CI=1.19-2.97) were significantly associated with depression. But insufficient job control, interpersonal conflict, job insecurity, the organizational system and lack of rewards were not. Conclusion : Among the emotional laborers, job stress, particularly job demand and occupational climate, were major contributing factors associated with depression. Early screening and preventive strategies focusing on job stress could reduce the impact of depression in emotional laborers.

  • 본 연구는 종합병원 간호사와 중등 교사들을 대상으로 감성지능에 따른 직업 정서적 만족과 직무만족, 조직몰입을 파악하고 각각의 변인들 간의 연관성을 확인하여 직업군별로 비교 분석하는 것에 목적을 두고 있다. 연구대상은 K시 소재 종합병원 간호사 58명과 동 소재 중등교사 48명을 대상으로 하였으며 자료 수집은 2014년 6월 15일부터 6월 30일까지 이루어졌다. 자료 분석은 SPSS Window 17.0, t-test, ANOVA 및 $Scheff{\acute{e}}$ test를 하였고, 연관성은 피어슨 상관계수와 다중회귀분석을 실시하였다. 연구결과 감정노동자의 감성지능은 전반적으로 직업 정서적 만족, 직무만족, 조직몰입에 정적으로 유의한 상관관계를 나타냈다. 이것은 감정노동자의 근무여건과 효율적인 제도를 마련할 수 있는 방안 모색에 기초자료가 될 것이다.

감정노동 수행시간과 근육통의 관련성 (The Relationship between Emotional Working Hour and Muscle Pain)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate muscle pains of emotional laborers and determine whether there were differences in their muscle pains depending on the hours spent on emotional labor. Methods: This is a secondary analysis of the data collected from the 3rd (2011) Korean Working Conditions Survey. 50,032 participants responded to the study's questionnaire. Among them, 15,669 participants were emotional laborers who directly dealt with people such as customers, passengers, pupils, patients, etc. Results: Thirty three percent of subjects had reported muscle pains. Muscle pains of subjects were positively related to the hours spent on emotional labor (p<.001). According to the logistic regression analysis, the adjusted odd ratio of the subjects who spent about almost all of the work hours on emotional labor was 1.32 (95% CI: 1.15~1.52), compared to the subjects who spent about a quarter of their work hours on emotional labor, when other factors were controlled. Conclusion: The study's findings indicate that engaging in emotional labor for longer hours increases the risks of muscle pains. Occupational nurses must pay closer attention to the management of muscle pains of emotional laborers.

The Association of Workplace Psychosocial Factors and Musculoskeletal Pain Among Korean Emotional Laborers

  • Background: Many studies have reported negative psychological or physical effects of emotional labor. Relationship between work-related musculoskeletal disorder and psychosocial factors has been reported. To manage organizational and psychosocial factors of musculoskeletal disorder with work place intervention among emotional laborers, the factors contributing to musculoskeletal pain must be identified and clarified. Methods: Data from the fourth Korean Working Conditions Survey was analyzed. Based on the questionnaire, we selected emotional laborers and included 3,979 participants, excluding participants whose variables were of interest to the researcher. Weight variable was applied. The association with musculoskeletal pain and psychosocial factors, such as workload, monotonous work, job control, social support, and job satisfaction, was investigated. Results: Univariate analysis demonstrated that there was a statistically significant relationship between social support, job satisfaction, and musculoskeletal pain. In multivariate analysis, job satisfaction showed a strong correlation with musculoskeletal pain at all sites. Social support was significantly associated with backache. Monotonous work seemed to reduce the pain in the neck and/or upper limbs. Job control and work intensity were not significantly associated with musculoskeletal pain. Conclusion: In this study, job satisfaction was significantly associated with musculoskeletal pain, and social support among the social psychological stressors could reduce musculoskeletal pain. However, unlike previously known, the presence of monotonous work resulted in reduced musculoskeletal pain. The results of this study will help to establish the direction of improvement of atmosphere in the workplace to prevent the musculoskeletal pain of emotional laborers.

감정노동과 인권보호 - 항공사를 중심으로 (Emotional Labor and Human Rights Protection in the case of airlines)

  • 항공기 승객을 포함하여 소위 악성소비자에 의한 감정노동자의 피해는 소비자의 권한 남용이 노동자의 인권을 침해할 가능성이 많다는 이유로 심각한 사회 문제가 되고 있다. 감정노동은 공개적으로 얼굴과 신체를 나타내며 만들어 내는 감정 조절의 한 형태이며, 또한 노동자에 의한 감정의 관리가 시장에서 교환될 수 있는 상황을 만들어내는 직업에서의 감정의 관리에 해당한다. 감정노동을 요구하는 직업의 예로서 간호사, 의사, 대기 직원 및 TV 배우 등을 들 수 있다. 그러나 경제가 제조업으로부터 서비스업으로 이동함에 따라 더 많은 노동자들이 다양한 서비스의 직업 환경에 처해 있는데 과거에 비해 고용주의 요구에 따라 그들의 감정을 관리하도록 요구받고 있다. 감정노동으로부터 오는 증상의 하나는 소위 스마일증후군인데 마코토 나츠메교수는 노동자가 계속되는 부자연한 웃음의 결과로 우울증과 신체적 질병을 발전하게 된다고 주장한다. 직장에서의 심한 정도의 감정 통제는 종사자의 심한 정도의 감정 고갈 및 낮은 수준의 직업 만족도로 연결되어진다. 대부분의 경우, 감정노동자는 구매한 상품 및 서비스와 관련하여 공급자에게 대하여 불만을 제기하여 악의적으로 보상을 받으려는 악성소비자에 의한 권리 남용으로 상처를 받고 있다. 이러한 배경 하에서 한국 정부는 "소비자보호법"을 폐기하고 2006년 "소비자기본법"을 제정하였는데, 소비자는 보호를 받기도 하지만 동시에 의무와 책임을 가질 것을 규정하고 있다. "항공안전 및 보안에 관한법률"은 항공기 승객이 여행 중에 기내난동 등 금지되는 행위를 예시하고 있다. 또한 감정노동자의 인권은 예절과 품격 및 근로 환경의 문화적인 향상이 이루어질 때 더욱 보호될 수 있다.

감정노동자들의 부정적 정서가 정서소진에 미치는 영향: 정서조절의 매개효과를 조절하는 상황 요인 검증 (The Effects of the Negative Affectivity of Emotional Laborers on Their Emotional Exhaustion: Situational Characteristics Moderating the Mediation Effect of Emotion Regulation)

  • 정서조절은 정서와 관련된 개인차 요인이 개인의 정서 생활 및 행동에 미치는 영향을 매개하는 것으로 알려져 있다. 본 연구는 기존 매개모델에 상황 요인을 추가하여 상황에 따라 정서조절의 매개효과가 변화하는지 알아보았다. 이를 위해 다양한 직종에서 고객응대를 주 업무로 하고 있는 180명의 감정노동자를 대상으로 설문을 실시하여 감정노동자의 일상적 부정정서, 인지적 재평가, 정서적 소진, 본인이 경험하는 고객 불만의 강도 등을 측정하였다. 조절된 매개효과를 알아보기 위하여 조건적 간접효과를 분석한 결과, 고객 불만의 강도가 높은 상황에서는 부정정서가 인지적 재평가를 매개로 하여 정서적 소진에 미치는 간접효과가 정적으로 유의하였으나 고객 불만의 강도가 낮은 상황에서는 해당 간접효과가 부적으로 유의하였다. 이는 높은 강도의 부정정서 유발 상황에서는 인지적 재평가의 매개효과를 통해 감정노동자의 정서적 소진이 감소될 수 있지만, 낮은 강도의 부정적서 유발 상황에서는 인지적 재평가의 매개효과를 통해 정서적 소진이 증가될 수도 있다는 것을 보여준다. 이러한 결과는 정서조절 연구에 있어 개인차적인 측면과 상황적 측면이 통합적으로 고려되어야 함을 강조하며, 감정노동자 직군의 정서적 특수성에 대한 정보를 제공한다.

Sales People as Emotional Laborers: Psychological And Behavioral Outcomes

  • Ever since Hochschild (1983) introduced the concept of emotional labor in the workplace, it has constantly interested researchers due to its impact on employees' well-being as well as organizational outcomes. However, a thorough understanding of emotional labor and its relationship with various outcomes in sales people is not yet realized. In a systemic approach to the concept using quantitative methods is still necessary. The present study treats emotional labor as two factors (e.g. emotive dissonance and emotive effort). The psychological and behavioral outcomes of each sub-construct of emotional labor are investigated within a parsimonious framework. The findings suggest that emotional dissonance affected job satisfaction, while emotive effort had a significant influence on emotional exhaustion and job performance.

외식산업 종사자의 감정노동과 감정노동자의 정서, 커뮤니케이션 스킬간의 인과관계 (Causal Relationships between Emotional Labor and Emotions and Communication Skills in the Foodservice Industry)

  • This study is based on an empirical study on consequences of emotions and emotional labor in the food-service industry. It analyzed the effect of emotional labor on emotions of emotional laborers and the effect of emotional labor on communication skills. Data used for analysis were collected through the questionnaire surveyed on the various samples including employees of family restaurants, Korean restaurants, Chinese restaurants, Japanese restaurants, etc. The result of data analysis indicated that only the efforts for emotional expressions among the factors influenced affirmative emotion(P-value=0.042). It also showed that the factor of the efforts for emotional expressions by researchers had a positive effect on both language communication skills and non-language communication skills(P-value=0.000). This study was valuable in the aspect that emotions and communication skills were first selected as dependent variables of emotional labor and it verified causality between emotional labor and these variables. However, it also has some limitations that its sample size was small and it depended on convenience sampling.

Functional Connectivity with Regions Related to Emotional Regulation is Altered in Emotional Laborers

  • Emotional labor, characterized by a dysfunctional type of emotional regulation called surface acting, has detrimental psychological consequences on employees, including depression and social anxiety. Because such disorders exhibit psychological characteristics manifested through brain activation, previous studies have succeeded in distinguishing individuals with depression and social anxiety from healthy controls using their functional connectivity characteristics. However, it has not been established whether the functional connectivity characteristics associated with emotional labor are distinguishable. Thus, we obtained resting-state fMRI data from participants in the emotion labor (EL) group and control (CTRL) group, and we subjected their whole-brain functional connectivity matrices to a linear support vector machine classifier. Our analysis revealed that the EL and CTRL groups could be successfully distinguished on the basis of individuals' connectivity patterns, and confidence in the classification was correlated with the scores on the depression and social anxiety scales. These results are expected to provide insight on the neurobiological characteristics of emotional labor and enable the sorting of employees undergoing adverse emotional labor utilizing neurobiological observations.
