The Moderating Role of Emotional Intelligence on the Relationship Between Conflict Management Styles and Burnout among Firefighters

  • Background: While the organizational factors that account for firefighters' burnout have been extensively explored, the individual factors related to how they regulate interpersonal conflicts and emotions remain to be investigated. Previous research has demonstrated the association between emotional intelligence and conflict management styles and burnout, but no study has looked at the interrelationships among these factors in high-risk sectors. The present exploratory study aimed to fill this research gap by investigating the relationships between conflict management style, emotional intelligence and burnout in a sample of firefighters. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 240 French firefighters. Measures comprised validated scales of conflict management styles, emotional intelligence and burnout. Results: Results showed that the integrating conflict style reduced burnout. They also revealed the effects of emotion regulation on burnout, whereby the awareness and management of one's own emotions reduced burnout. Moreover, awareness of one's own emotions moderated the relationship between integrating conflict resolution style and burnout, whereby the effect of integrating style on reduced burnout was higher when awareness of one's own emotions was high. Conclusion: These results reveal that strategies used by firefighters to regulate their emotions in order to meet the emotional demands specific to their job are important for reducing the emotional exhaustion component of burnout. Training programs for conflict and emotion management are needed to preserve the mental health of firefighters and ensure the safety of interventions.

전통공연예술인의 감정노동에 관한 연구 (An Study on the Emotional Labor of Traditional Performing Artists)

  • 본 연구는 공연 활동에서 자신의 감정을 숨기고 통제하는 전통공연예술인의 감정노동과 그 감정노동의 구성요소 및 특성을 파악하고자 전통공연예술인을 대상으로 심층 인터뷰하고 Giorgi의 분석방법으로 분석한 문화기술지 연구이다. 분석결과 첫째, 전통공연예술인의 감정노동을 야기하는 요소는 공연 중 외부적·내부적인 요소로 나눌 수 있다. 외부적 요소는 관객의 감정을 끌어내기 위해 감정을 만들어 내거나 억누르며 자신의 감정과는 다른 다양한 감정을 표현함에 따라 발생하였다. 또한 공연 장소와 공연 형태, 관객의 반응에 따라 감정노동이 발생하였다. 내부적 요소는 공연을 통해 관객을 만족시키기 위해 자발적으로 열정을 쏟아 공연에 임하며 실수에 대한 부담감과 관객 만족에 대한 부담감을 안고 있었다. 둘째, 공연 후 지속되는 복합적인 감정들이 감정노동의 후유증으로 남기도 한다. 셋째, 조직생활에서 비롯된 감정노동 요소가 영향을 주었으며, 이로 인하여 이직이나 퇴사를 고려하기도 하였다. 넷째, 예술인이라는 특수성으로 인해 사회에서 받는 부정적인 인식과 현대예술과 전통예술과의 차별과 편견, 관행으로 인해 발생하는 감정노동이다. 연구결과 전통공연예술인들은 개인의 취미 활동, 동료들과의 수다 등으로 감정노동을 해소하고 있었으며, 직업적 감정노동을 감정노동으로 인식하지 못하고 당연하게 받아들이고 있었다. 본 연구는 전통공연예술인의 감정노동에 관한 연구로서 공연예술인을 감정노동자로 인식하고 감정노동의 구성요소와 특성을 분석한 기초연구로써 연구 의의를 찾을 수 있다.

만화학습에 있어서 창의성개발과 감성지능의 관계에 관한 연구 (A study on Connection between Creativity Development and Emotional Quotient in Cartoon Learning)

  • 본 연구는 만화표현학습에서의 '창의성'과 '감성지능'에 대한 문헌정리와 상관분석을 통해 두 영역의 요소에 대한 관계성을 보여주고자 한다. 학습자인 초등학생의 만화표현을 통하여 자기감성지능평가와 전문가의 창의성 평가에 대한 각각의 하위요인별로 분석이 이루어졌다. 선행연구자료 조사에서 창의성과 감성지능은 관계성이 있으며 창의성이 높으면 감성지능도 높다고 말할 수 있는 일반적인 사고가 있었다. 그러나 본 연구의 상관분석결과 만화표현학습에 있어서 창의성 평가와 감성지능은 관계는 있지만 모든 요소가 다 관계가 나타나지 않았다. 또한 창의성평가에 대한 상 하위 그룹 학습자들의 감성지능평가 결과 각 그룹에 대한 감성지능요소는 차이가 있었다. 본 연구를 통해 감성지능과 창의성 요소는 각 분야에 맞는 감성지능개발방법을 찾는 것이 창의성을 높이는 방법이라고 말할 수 있다. 따라서 만화표현학습을 통한 창의성 개발을 위해서는 관계성이 있는 감성지능 요소 추출에 대한 체계적인 연구방향을 이루어나가야 할 것이다.

한 대학병원 종사자의 감정노동 수준과 그에 영향을 미치는 요인 (The Level of Emotional Labor among Workers in One University Hospital)

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of emotional labor and to identify affecting factors on emotional labor among one university hospital employees. Material and Method : This study was based on cross-sectional, self-administered, and Internet-based survey. The survey was conducted from Mar. 2 to Mar. 28. 2011. Total subjects were 812 employees working in one university hospital. Total response rate was 61.5%. Modified evaluation tool was used, which was originally developed by Morris and Feldman, to measure the level of emotional labor among hospital personnel. In order to identify the affecting factors on high level of emotional labor, we conducted logistic regression. The SPSS statistical software package was used to perform the statistical analysis. All statistical tests were 2-sided and a p-value<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results : Average score of emotional labor was 3.06. Employees(3.39) who are working at the emergency department and hemodialysis room indicated the highest level of emotional labor, followed by wards(3.14), department of administration(3.14), department of ambulatory cares(3.06). The factors affecting on the high level of emotional labor were the highest level of schooling, types of department, and types of personality(p<0.05). Conclusion : The survey results showed that there was significant level of emotional labors among hospital employees. Therefore, the efforts to reduce the level of emotional labors are needed.

백화점 판매사원의 감정노동과 직무스트레스 반응에 관한 연구 (A Study on Response of Job Stress and Emotional Labor of the Sales Workers of Department Store)

  • Purpose: This study purposed on investigating how the emotional labor affects the physical uncomfortable feeling of the workers in the department store. Method: The method of data collection was used of questionnaire for 574 workers of one department store located in Seoul. The period of data collection was done from November 1, 2004 to November 30 for about one month. The working career of the participants was over one month at that department. Result: The degree of emotional labor for participants, men were $3.21{\pm}0.53$ for the total point of 5.0 point, and the degree of the physical uncomfortable feeling was $3.07{\pm}0.48$ for total of 5.0 point. The degree of emotional labor for participants, women were $3.22{\pm}0.42$ for the total point of 5.0 point, and the degree of the physical uncomfortable feeling was $3.13{\pm}0.42$ for total of 5.0 point. In order to analyze the factors that affected the emotional labor and physical uncomfortable feeling, the multi-level reflecting analysis was used. As a result, men were insecurity of job influenced the emotional labor feeling in remarkable degree, women were the responsibility of job influenced the emotional labor. Men were insecurity and responsibility of job influenced physical uncomfortable feeling in remarkable degree, women were responsibility of job and emotional labor influenced the physical uncomfortable feeling in remarkable degree. Conclusion: The results of this study show that various strategies to remove the factors of job insecurity in order to reduce the level of emotional labor of the workers at the department store should be devised. In addition, the special way to minimize the physical insecurity should be contrived and carried out. Since the workers of the department stores had higher emotional labor, the factors of stress need to be analyzed and should be removed.

간호사의 감정노동 개념분석 (Concept Analysis of Nurses' Emotional Labor)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to analyze the concept of nurses' emotional labor. Method: Rodgers's evolutionary concept analysis was used. Result: Nurses' emotional labor can be defined by two attributes: emotional distortion and self-regulation process. Antecedents of nurses' emotional labor include interactional, organizational and personal factors. The consequences of nurses' emotional labor are emotional dissonance and internalization of organizational display rules. Conclusion: Appropriate instrument to operationalize the concept need to be developed.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between emotional competence and social adjustment among Korean children and adolescents. The subjects of this study were 380 children between fifth and sixth grade ages and 579 middle school students. Their emotional competence was assessed by 'Korean Emotional Competence Scale (Kim et al., 2004),' and also their social adjustment by 'Social Adjustment Scale (Lee, 1994).' The data were analyzed by ANOVA, the Pearson's Correlation, and Regression, using SPSS. The results of this study are as follows: (1) Children's and adolescents' emotional competence and social adjustment had a meaningful difference according to SES, gender, and grade. (2) There was a significant, positive relationship between their emotional competence and social adjustment. Their social adjustment was related more strongly to factors, such as Self-expressiveness, Assertion, and Positive thinking, and also their emotional competence more to Self-adjustment and Emotional adjustment. (4) Social adjustment of children and adolescents was predicted best by Self-expressiveness and Assertion, Positive Thinking, Awareness and Understanding of Emotion, and Consideration factors of emotional competence.

예비 유아교사의 정서지능이 자아개념 및 자기효능감에 미치는 영향 (Impact of Emotional Intelligence on Self-Concept and Self-Efficacy among Preservice Early Childhood Teachers)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of the emotional intelligence of preservice early childhood teachers on their self-concept and self-efficacy in an attempt to provide some information on the development of the emotional intelligence of preservice early childhood teachers. The subjects in this study were the freshmen, sophomores and juniors who were in the departments of early childhood education in private colleges and universities in Chungcheong, Kyonggi, Seoul, in Korea. After a survey was conducted, the following findings were given: First, the juniors had the best self-concept of the others, and the freshmen were ahead of the others in self-efficacy. The university students had a better self-concept than the college students. Second, emotional intelligence had a statistically significant positive correlation to self-concept and self-efficacy. Third, all the sub-factors of emotional intelligence exerted a statistically significant positive influence on self-concept. Among the sub-factors of emotional intelligence, emotional regulation and emotional utilization exerted a statistically significant positive influence on self-efficacy. The findings of the study illustrated that the preservice early childhood teachers had a better self-concept and a better self-efficacy when they were better at emotional intelligence.

일개 병원 임상간호사의 감정노동과 직무스트레스에 관한 연구 (The Relationship Between Emotional Labor and Job Stress of Clinical Nurses in a Hospital)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this research is to understand the relationship between emotional labor and job stress for clinical nurses. Method: The information for this research has been gathered in method of questionnaire for 202 nurses working in a hospital from January 30 to February 10, 2006. Results; The emotional labor for clinical nurses showed 2.43 on a scale of 4 and the job stress showed 49.84 out of 100. The correlation between the emotional labor and job stress showed that the emotional labor was higher, job stress was also higher. The result was that the factors that influenced the emotional labor were health status in a subjective point of view, working department, and the personality. The factors that influence job stress were self-efficacy, working department, and health status in a subjective point of view. Conclusion: The result of the research showed that emotional labor and job stress for clinical nurses were high and the strategy for reduction in those two areas is needed. Especially, diversified plans for job demand and occupational climate in an area of job stress that is correlated to emotional labor will be needed to minimize the emotional labor and job stress.

감성적-유용적 동기에 따른 커피전문점 시장세분화 (Market Segmentation Based on Emotional-utilitarian Motivation - Focused on Specialty Coffee Shops -)

  • 본 연구는 기호식품인 커피가 감성적 성격 혹은 유용적 성격의 소비재로 사용되고 있는 현실을 인식하여 커피전문점 이용 동기를 감성적-유용적 동기로 파악하고, 이 동기요인에 따라 시장세분화를 시도하였다. 시장세분 결과, 감성적 동기가 높은 감성적 소비자와 유용적 동기가 높은 유용적 소비자, 그리고 두 가지 동기요인이 모두 낮게 나타난 수동적 소비자의 세 집단으로 구분되었다. 집단별 커피전문점 이용 선택 속성에 있어서 유의한 차이를 보였는데, 감성적 소비자는 '커피맛과 분위기', '특별한 커피', '쾌적한 공간' 등 감성적 선택 요인에 대한 인식과 '가격적 혜택', '인터넷 사용 여부' 등 실용적 혜택에 대한 중요도 인식이 높은 것으로 파악되어 감성적 소비자인 동시에 합리적 소비자라고 할 수 있다. 반면, 유용적 소비자는 '여러 명이 회의할 수 있는 독립적 공간', '혼잡 정도', '화장실 및 흡연실 등의 시설' 등의 '쾌적한 공간'에 대한 중요도 인식이 높게 나타났다. 또, 세분시장별 일반적 특성이나 커피 음용 행동 간 연관성에 있어서, 성별과 주로 마시는 커피 종류, 커피 마시는 시간대, 마시는 장소만이 유의한 연관성을 가지는 것으로 파악되었다.
