Effect of Emotional Labor on the Burnout and Organizational Commitment among Flight Attendants (항공사 승무원의 감성노동이 소진과 조직몰입에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship among the emotional labor, burnout, and organizational commitment in airline context. In this study, 2 hypotheses based on literature reviews were employed. Questionnaire was also developed based on previous studies. A convenience sample of 163 flight attendants was surveyed and 153 usable questionnaires were analyzed. According to the literature review, emotional labor was divided into 'surface acting' and 'deep acting'. Burnout, on the other hand, was categorized into the following variables: 'emotional exhaustion', 'depersonalization' and 'reduced feelings of personal accomplishment' accordingly. Then the data and hypotheses were examined using structural equation modeling (SEM) by AMOS. The results are as follows. Firstly, emotional labor has no effect on 'emotional exhaustion' while emotional labor has negative effects on 'depersonalization' and 'reduced feelings of personal accomplishment'. Secondly, 'depersonalization' and 'reduced feelings of personal accomplishments'' factor have negative effects on organizational commitment while 'emotional exhaustion' has no effect on organizational commitment. Continuous and systematic training should be conducted to administer 'emotional labor'. Consulting system should also be conducted to reduce burnout and systematic procedure is also needed to induce positive results from burnout.

A Study on the Moderating Role of Hotel Employees' Emotional Labor in the Causal Relationships among Emotional Dissonance, Burnout, and Job Satisfaction (호텔 직원의 감정 부조화, 소진 및 직무만족도의 인과관계에서 감정노동 조절효과 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to consider the moderating effects of employees' emotional labor on the relationships among hotel employees' emotional dissonance, burnout and job satisfaction. The survey was administerd to 377 employees working for deluxe hotels in Korea. The results indicated that the proposed model fit to the data well(${\chi}^2$=307.888, df=51, p<.001, GFI .890, AFGI .833, NFI .931, IFI .942, CFI .942). The finding showed that employees' emotional dissonance had a significantly positive effect on their burnout (${\beta}$=.194; t=3.533; p<.001) and a significantly negative effect on job satisfaction(${\beta}$=-.352; t=-6.906; p<.001). In addition, employees' burnout had a significantly negative effect on their job satisfaction(${\beta}$=-.267; t=-5.261; p<.001). For the moderating effects of employees' emotional labor on the relationship between emotional dissonance and job satisfaction, the results indicated that significant relationships varied to employees' surface acting whereas deep acting did not. Limitations and future research directions are also discussed.

The Effect of the Possibility of Job-related Risk, Emotional Labor, and Emotional Leadership on Turnover Intention of Caregivers in Long-term Care Facilities (장기요양기관 내 위험발생가능성, 감정노동, 감성리더십이 요양보호사의 이직의도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the possibility of job-related risk, emotional labor, and emotional leadership on the job turnover intention of caregivers working at the long-term care facilities in Korea. For the study, survey data of 434 caregivers at senior nursing homes were collected and analyzed using hierarchical multiple regression method. The results showed that high level of caregivers'perception of both the possibility of management risk and employee risk led to increased turnover intention. On the other hand, perception of the possibility of social-disaster risk did not give significant impact on turnover intention. Although the perception of the possibility of service user risk gave statistically significant effect on the turnover intention, the direction was the opposite to the one set at the research hypothesis. Frequent camouflage behavior("surface acting") of caregivers, which is the kind of emotional labor led to increased turnover intention. However, caregivers'behavior consistent with their inner warm heart("deep acting") did not lead to a statistically significant result. Lastly, the more caregivers perceive their superiors'emotionally supportive leadership, the lower possibility of turnover intention. Based on the above result, the researchers suggested several intervention methods in order to prevent turnover of caregivers and improve service quality of long-term care institutions.

Contribution of Customer Orientation to Emotional Labor and Customer-Related Social Stressors in School Foodservice Employees -Focus on Daegu and Gyeongbuk Provinces- (학교급식 조리종사원의 고객지향성이 감정노동과 고객관련 스트레스에 미치는 영향 -대구·경북지역을 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine how customer orientation (CO) reduces employee stress to customers (CSS). As emotional labor strategies [surface acting (SA) and deep acting (DA)] may mediate a role between CO and CSS, we verified multiple parallel mediator roles of SA and DA between CO and CSS. Our survey was administered to 323 school foodservice employees in Daegu and Gyeongbuk. The results show that CO increased DA but did not decrease SA, and SA had a positive effect on CSS while DA did not influence CSS. These results did not support the parallel multiple mediator model. We conducted post-hoc model modification and proposed the serial multiple mediator model as a modified model. As a result, CO increased DA, DA reduced SA, and SA showed a positive relation with CSS. This double mediating effect through DA and SA between CO and CSS was significant. Based on these results, we found that CO did not have a direct effect on SA and CSS. DA did not directly reduce CSS while CO reduced SA and CSS through DA indirectly. DA had a negative effect on CSS through SA indirectly. Finally, implications and limitations of this are discussed.
